Why don't you get that there are a ton of fans who don't like what Tekken has become? T8 is a huge departure from what T3 and T5 was about. In many people's eyes the changes are not good at all. We just want to play T5DR in best graphics and rollback. Yet there is not option to do that. There is only this new T8 on crack and with every new rendition the game is less and less classical Tekken. I get it many people like changes but many do not. If you want to change so much make a spinoff. If someone likes soccer they don't want soccer changed either. Bamco gives fans of classical Tekken nowhere to go so there is negativity going around. A reminder that we got Hero, Sephiroth, and Sora in Smash's DLC cycle. Yes, I know, Sora is a Disney character legally, point still stands that it's a joint Square IP. Square fans ATE when it came to DLC content for Smash, not even with just the fighters, but even with smaller content like Spirits. Bamco and Square are clearly extremely comfortable working together at this point. It's absolutely not impossible that Square would be willing to play ball with Tifa next season or the season after.

Technically the Heroes from Dragon Quest belong to the Enix side from S-E, though more precisely to Armor Project, who actually own the Dragon Quest IP. I actually find it kind of interesting that the only Final Fantasy representation in Smash Bros. comes from the Compilation of FFVII, at least DQ includes elements from DQ III, IV, VIII and XI, and the Hero's Final Smash brings all of the DQ main protagonists. @@WatsonDynamite The reason the DQ hero is able to represent the franchise as a whole is because, as a silent protagonist, he's just a generic filler character at the end of the day. He's generic enough that you can play the main protagonist of a few DQ games interchangably and the same moveset is appropriate for all of them. But it's because he's so generic that they're able to give him a moveset that's representative of the series as a whole, rather than just the one character. Meanwhile, both Cloud and Sephiroth are very specific characters, and it's appropriate that their movesets are specific to them. While he can equip magic and summons, Cloud's main thing has always been his sword, and it's better to design him around that than give him a bunch of generic final fantasy spells and design him as "the final fantasy character." Imagine how disappointing it would be if you got to play Cloud with his buster sword in a fighting game, but his playstyle was to sit back and throw out firagas and thundagas.

A lot of people here are summarizing the argument wether Clive is a SouCal or Tekken character by just the fact he is using a sword, even mentioning Yoshimitsu as a counter example ("Tekken already has sword wielding characters, therefore other sword users are fine"). But what everyone seems to overlook is how Clive just looks like a fantasy character, that might be better suited in such a setting, as is seen in the SoulCal games. Yoshimitsu is a great example to underline this, because (as far as I know) his Tekken and SoulCal designs are quite distinct and you don't get Tekken-Yoshi in Soul Cal or vice versa. That's also why Noctus or Negan might have been a better fit, as those are "modern" characters. Personally I don't play Tekken 8 and I am not as invested as other people in this, but seeing Tekken characters fighting in what looks like a castle (Clive's stage) seemed a bit out of place - at least more out of place than Noctis stage, which was just a gas station (if I am not mistaken).

Something with Noctis that wasn't mentioned: FF15 has a much more modern setting with cars, technology, etc. Just looking at Noctis - his style and clothing - he fits Tekken a whole lot better because of the modern setting and influences. But Clive's source game is a straight-up fantasy setting, and just looking at him doesn't blend well with the modern style and sensibility of other characters. If you knew nothing about Noctis going into Tekken 7, he didn't look THAT out of place, but Clive sure as hell will in Tekken 8.

Would've been cool to see Tifa announced but Clive feels like he'd be more interesting from a gameplay point, considering that with Tifa, I feel like the majority of the stuff would be extremely similar to Asuka. Nina gets not one, but two guns! When they showed the Heihachi trailer, I tought hmm... those monks look sus. I imagined they'd do secret Mishima rituals to somehow brought ancient Heihachi from SoulCalibur II. Remember, Tekken and SoulCalibur are actually set in the same universe, just at different time. It would blow people's mind! That way, it'd also connected Tekken and SoulCalibur and be the basis to bring at least some of the most popular SoulCalibur characters into Tekken. Not only that, but they could then tie the origin of The Devil Gene into the SoulEdge, also how Ancient / True Ogre fits into all this. But no, Harada simply went Heihachi is lava-proof. The end. What a missed opportunity to bring Tekken and SoulCalibur together using a unique fact that Heihachi happened to be a guest character in a SoulCalibur game more than a decade ago! Imagine if we already have some SoulCalibur characters in Tekken (say, Taki, Ivy and Voldo for example,) nobody would be repulsed when Clive arrives. He will fit in effortlessly.

Clive isn't a bad character, it just feels like a compromise to like 25 other better choices

I remember when people say Lucky Chloe don't fit Tekken despite her not using weapons, and for that reason why I think people are saying, "They don't fit Tekken" is them saying "I don't like this character"

Even the music and stage itself is like Soul Calibur. Compare that stage on the trailer with the Ostrheinsburg and Romanian Valley Castle Siege. And compare the music with Soul Calibur V Hilde and Siegfried Theme lol

“She’s from a game that didn’t sell that well” there’s a lot you could say about both the original & remake of FF7 but it’s probably the best selling game in the franchise.
