Considering how much of the technique of guitar and ukulele are directly transferable to each other, I feel like the only real reason to not have at least one of each is if you can't afford to get both in a good quality. Sorry, not suggesting you would, I mention it because I think this is an error on Enya's part in the marketing (and they are not the only ones to do it) - the use of 'Carbon Fiber' in the billing - it's NOT carbon fibre - Carbon Fibre you could run over with a truck and it would be just fine. I think people saw that and assumed they were unbreakable. They are still very tough and if you clipped a table edge with it, it would stand up FAR better than a glossed wooden uke!

Just ordered one of these for 150 USD, which feels like a steal. When you drive a small car, a dreadnought guitar in a hard case basically takes up all of your luggage space, but with something closer in size to a Les Paul it's easier to just kinda wedge it somewhere. I'll be using it for camping, so portability and durability are more important than sound, but judging from the samples I've heard it sounds pretty much like a guitar (I'm not picky)

My decision process was between guitar und ukulele. I have decided for ukulele, because it's my first instrument ever and I' m end 50. So I thought about what would be easier for me to wrap my old head around. However, if somebody was to ask me why I chose ukulele over guitar I'd say: "Because guitar is inefficient and so are guitar players, as their instrument has six strings and they only have four fingers plus a thumb on their hand to play it with :-) " . Seriously, I'd love to also learn guitar, but I'm still practising my first three chords on the ukulele. Perhaps I'll try guitar at some point, who knows, but not before I can play Hotel California including the long intro. I learn a lot through your videos. Thank you for them.

Many uke *and* guitar players fail to realize guitar has very lush open voicings possible by using open strings mixed w/ stopped strings. This allows unison doubling, octave doubling, and larger or smaller intervals that aren't possible if you limit yourself to chords fingered on adjacent strings. I'm learning to wrap my ears around the simpler closer voicings of the uke.

I have a black one coming tomorrow via USPS. Will let you know what I think of it. I am 81 and have been playing fingerstyle guitar (caused by my love for folk music) for over 60 years. My only concern is that it will arrive with a high fret (seems to be a problem with some of them) and or intonation that is out of wack. Those are problems that can be fixed with wooden guitars but a composite guitar is a different animal. I live in Minneapolis MN where the average indoor humidity is 15% or less so I need a guitar I don't have to pamper that can be left out on its stand 24/7. I wonder how many luthiers would be willing to work on these Enya Go guitars? Not many I would imagine. Anyway, I will put mine in tune tomorrow and let you know if I have any problems with it. Thanks for your review of the Enya. It is one of the reasons I bought one. I see Enya monitors these comments so maybe they will chime in if I have any problems.

Thanks for the review. Been looking at carbon fibre as possible travel guitars, though I find the claim by many to be ' Travel Guitars ' a little disingenuous: fine for travelling by car or train but they would not fit in the overhead locker on a plane. The only contender on that score is the Journeyman Carbon Fibre ( there is a wood version too) that has a detachable neck. Costs upwards of £1,000 however! Or a Snapdragon I suppose, which would suffice for practice. All this aside, I am interested in small body guitars generally, notwithstanding I have Dreadnought and Grand Concert guitars and a Gretsch Gin Rickey Parlour guitar and would love it if you could lay your hands on another ' travel guitar' made by a respected maker of Ukuleles to review, namely the ANueNue M20 guitar. Solid mahogany, around £400, a beautiful looking thing and from reviews that I have seen to date sounds very good, but I would love to get your opinion of it. To date I have been most swayed by your review of the Yamaha APXt2 in the small guitar sector. Almost bought one off eBay for £140, but wonder if I should dig deeper into my pocket for the ANueNue. I am certainly not one of those exclusive musicians you speak of. I have a Noah Uke too ( recommended by you) and for me it's a case of horses for courses: In many ways I think the Beatles' ' Here Comes the Sun ' sounds better on a Uke than a guitar. After all, on guitar it is capo'ed at the 7th fret... Hope you can persuade ANueNue to lend you one! Cheers Roy Ps. You have across me before: Hyrax 56 = Roy Cuckow. This attitude doesn't help to make friends. For me personaly the Uke is a great Instrument to rethink my guitar voicings due to the limitation of the number of strings an the high G. Very interesting. I think they might have missed an opportunity in the travel market by not making it even shorter with a truncated headstock though (much like the Klos). Since it can't be adjusted, what is the action at the first fret? And since it is normal tuning with a short scale length, does it require medium (13s) or heavy (14s) gauge strings to not get too floppy in string tension? Certainly a different offering than the Outdoor Guitar version, with its 20" scale length and nylon strings.
@GotAUkulele2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps - with the zero fret in play, the action at the first is spot on for my tastes - nothing I would adjust. Not sure on the gauges, but it's not massively short scale - 23" - slightly longer than a Taylor Baby - they come with 12's and feel fine.

My new Enya Nova Go guitar arrived today. I tuned it with the strings that came on it, but when I checked it at the 12th fret, the notes were high there. I decided to try some classical guitar strings on it since I had those lying around and the intonation was better, but so far the strings are stretching a lot. I may try some low tension strings later on. The classical strings give a warmer sound than the Phosphor Bronze strings that came on it, which had a bright sound.

Barry, I have a few questions for you. Are the holes that the bridge pins go into, are they re-enforced at all? With wood acoustic guitars, over time metal strings can wear lines / notches in to the bridge in front of each bridge pin hole. So seeing how this is ABS plastic, including the bridge, those metal strings have a far faster chance of wearing in the same fashion regardless if they are light gauge? Also, maybe I missed it but is there a truss rod in the neck? Maybe on the headstock under that triangular plate piece? That neck is going to need a truss rod with those metal strings that are on it.. So I hope I just missed you talking about that. Don't get me wrong, as songwriter/composer (under performance rights organization, BMI, Inc) I'm VERY interested in this model as I play many instruments for the commercially licensed music that I write and record.. Especially if the folks over at Enya do put in the electronics for a piezo pickup. Thank You Sir for your time.. Cheers.

I don't know what to think of this guitar. For the most part, it sounds like (_*_) to me, but then again it's compressed and coming through speakers, so it's not like I'm there in person. Just wanted to say that the gentleman doing the review is great :)
@GotAUkulele2 жыл бұрын
Thank you - in the flesh it sounds surprisingly decent - like a half decent acoustic played through a small amp. The Bluetooth music feature also fills the room if you need it to.

I don't know if it's appearance is effecting how I perceive its sound or not, but I don't like it's sound in spite of what seemed like great sustain.

It's certainly not regular guitar sounding, but I quite like it for being different. Kind of its own thing

Geeking out here, but they did not put a compensated bridge on mine and it was not fit well to the slot, tilted and too high, so switched to a graphtec PQ-9216-CO and added their pins too, just because. It sounds great and has the action balance I like. The neck is really precision done, but they must have run out of the compensated bridges on mine and put on a really bad one. This is a really great guitar. The neck is superb, but could have been contoured better on the upper end. Just a little bit of a ledge on it. Tuners are OK so far. It's predrilled for a bridge pickup, but I use a mic. They are coming out soon with an electronic one with phone app. : ( Take home is that this is really good and worth adjusting a little, especially for the price. It doesn't sound like wood, but sustains well, has some bass, throws off wild harmonics and the neck is super, especially if it doesn't change with the weather. Love it.

Thanks for the tip. I replaced the saddle with a graphtec because I had same issues. Made a big difference in the action height and tone. I should replace the bridge pins because the ones they sent like to slip out. Probably my fault since I tried like 8 sets of strings before deciding on the D Addario Nickel Bronze

Why? This is a regular guitar? Nylon strings tuned to A-A would be loose and have very little projection on an instrument like this

@GotAUkulele Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Sorry - have a policy of never recommending strings - not me being unhelpful, it's just a totally subjective thing. I've seen people argue about the same string set - one saying they are bright, one saying warm - yet they are both right! (we all hear and play differently). My advice is just to buy a few sets and trust your own ears as to what you like

Wound strings on an acoustic - most of them do that with some fingers - it's why I put nanoweb coated strings on my acoustics - not a fault of the guitar or the strings - more my fingers!
