Thank you. Your honest, open, sharing will help more than you know. I am a mental health clinician of 26+ years. When we normalize conversations around health, mental health and stress….we can then heal. Your generosity and honesty is so kind, not a surprise. You are a gift. ❤️

@@manilo-j8n Yikes. Not sure how this was in any way in the spirit of her video or positive in any way. Karen does not "recommend" but is in fashion and shows products, so feel you are way off target at what you have implied. Peace and positive vibes. Good on her for letting us know she is human. Not sure how trolling anyone is helpful to mental health?

Karen, you are so right. The food here is so processed we can't digest it. I started making sour dough bread and that process using a sour dough starter allows me to eat bread without any bloating! Food is medicine, fast food is even worse. Recently several fast food chains were tested for toxins and hormones, they found the numbers off the chart, in the wrong direction. Further, the meats were tested had no nutrients or vitamin B's present! Do your best if you eat beef to find grass fed or organic. Best of luck to you my friend!

I just wanted to co-sign what you said about the food in France vs US. I live part-time in France and I have noticed a big difference in my gut health and my overall energy levels when I am in France. I can’t eat anything here in the US without feeling tired or bloated. I used to think I had a gluten intolerance which I might but I can eat bread in France and basically anything there and not get sick. I get so angry when I think about the food here in the US and how it is processed. I think all countries and all people deserve quality food. I have even taken to growing my own vegetables because of this.

I have been feeling down recently: sad about my non-existent dating life, stressed about money and work, and exhausted from going through the motions of life without any real passion as of lately. I tried my usual mood boosters - dancing, listening to audiobooks, resting, etc - but praying and watching this video are the only things that helped me feel better. Sometimes, we need reminders that we all struggle and there's no shame in this. Even in the Bible, books like Ecclesiastes describe the timeless human experience of feeling hopelessness and despair. There are no easy answers yet at least we have each other, whether it's our online or offline communities and connections. This is more than I would normally write for a KZbin comment, yet it is cathartic to release these emotions and to hope that someone else may draw comfort from them as well. We have to continue taking care of ourselves and each other as best as we can.

Thanks for sharing that Karen. I'm retired but I used to work in the mental health field and there is a stigma still to admitting to being under stress and needing help. Even I have those thoughts: "I need help." "I should get help." "No, I can handle this by myself." You are an inspiration to those who need help but won't ask or people who are just too proud to ask for help. I like your idea of "team work". Take care of yourself Karen cause we all do enjoy your videos.

If you're stressing more now than when you were younger, it's probably hormonal. Hormones start depleting in late 30s and early 40s. It's preparing you for menopause. It all sucks and the symptoms progressively get worse. The pill or hormone replacement therapy can really help. Also, take really good quality vitamins. The symptoms are endless: depression/anxiety, brain frog, hot flashes, lack of sleep, weight gain, joint pain, muscle pain, vertigo, itchy or painful scalp, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc...

As a spectator in your life and thoroughly enjoying your content, thank you for being so transparent and open about your mental and physical health. We really have no idea how many hours you spend doing your job, the time looks endless to me, so I shouldn't really be surprised! I'm a performer and the travelling alone wears me out and I'm not even making content! Over the Christmas and New Year period I was flying every 2 days and its taken me nearly 2 weeks to recover, so I can't imagine how you and Michael do everything?? So! That being said, take the time you need to do mental and physical maintenance. I have watched you and Michael for YEARS now and I'm not going anywhere! How's Michael managing with his broken toe? I know how that feels too! Sending virtual hugs to you both 😍😍

Hi Karen. I just had to stop the video and it's about when you talk about your joints. I think you said you've had a hysterectomy correct me if I'm wrong anyhow. This is definitely your menopause that started, we get these sensitivities then. I have followed Louise Newson The Menopause Doctor I UK, for years bc of my menopause difficulties, and she's so so good. She even has her own app now. I live in Sweden, and it was so hard to find a gynecologist with the correct information . Suddenly, I stumbled on her. I had so many different symptoms, and I understood that I needed more estrogen and testosterone. It took me about 2 years to find the right one and within a very short time, I started to feel like myself again, I thought I were going insane. So please see if that is what could help and also about your stress, fatigue, no inspiration etc. Take care xxx

2023 was a year like this for me as well, work was insane, my health suffered, I maxed out my ability to power through. I’ve had surgery for fibroids as well though a few years ago and honestly the first thing I thought during recovery was WTF?! Why didn’t anyone warn us this is a thing! It was terrible. In any case this year I’m also trying to let go more, stress less, trust in the team I worked so hard to bring on last year and prioritize my health more. It feels like a lot of people around me passed away the last couple of years, and statistically I read this is the case for lots of people even taking into account the pandemic, which is heartbreaking and also a reminder that we have to take care of ourselves while we still can. I really appreciate your ability to convey your kind personality. It's like watching a friend 😊 I'm from England but I have lived in the States for nearly thirty four years! I never really got used to the bread products unless they are from a bakery. I had a health scare early 2022 and went on Keto. Since then I have lost seventy five pounds and I found the same issue with wheat, or rather Gluten. I eat a Mediterranean diet and feel great. Targeting the Gut biomes is key.. humans weren't made to eat all that packed stuff. I love the videos you produce especially your artsy scenic ones. I think if someone else were to do it they better have a great artistic ability. Also, I bought all of your the Drop clothes. The feel quality and cut are superb. I'm short at five two yet the clothes are proportionate which must have been a challenge because people are every height . Happy New Year Karen and may all your wishes come true. Jayne in Wisconsin 😊

Me too on inflammation caused by wheat. I believe my gut lining was compromised by too many antibiotics (for acne) every day from age 13 to 20 (now 66). I believe the single-cell lining of my gut allowed food particles, bacteria, impurities get into my blood stream. Caused an immune system inflammation throughout my body and when the impurities settled in my joints, I got rheumatoid arthritis. Other inflammation symptoms include acne, eczema, rosacea, depression. I used the Whole 30 elimination diet to identify which foods/ingredients to identify what foods bother me. Wheat, even gluten free, causes inflammation especially rosacea. Milk in higher quantities gives me eczema and bumps on my scalp. I worry about inflammation that I cannot see like in heart muscle and brain. Your body is unique because of your history, your microbiome, your environment and your food supply. Do what works for your body at the present moment. You know your body better than any doctor, but use what is available to you, evaluate the validity and appropriate for your body and keep moving forward. My anecdotes: Traveling in Ireland, I knew there food purity was much better and I enjoyed all the brown bread and amazing dairy products. But by the time I got home, my face turned purple and inflamed. Ice packs were required. Doctors prescribed antibiotics that did nothing except possibly more damage. Pizza party breakdown. 6 pieces of pizza were followed by 2 weeks of inflamed purple face with hot pusy sores. Ice packs needed to fall asleep . Have not eaten pizza since. No will power required. Now very strict with diet. Skin is my canary in my coal mine but harder to tell what causes the inflammation that only shows up in my blood tests. Have been able to take less-strong arthritis drugs when I control my diet. Zero depression on good diet. Trust your body. Learn about microbiome Learn about gut lining health Thanks for sharing. Love your channel.

Karen, when my family moved to AZ we noticed a huge shift in the quality of beef, chicken, fish, etc. We raised free range, antibiotic, grass fed animals in our former life and the quality was completely different. We are now vegetarians and feel much better. Sadly , the US food supply is not good and I say this as someone who comes from a lineage of farmers. I'm glad my family got out of the business when we did.

The fibroids are taking more from you than you realize. Wheat is a big contributor as well, and you obviously see and feel the difference. I cut out wheat/cheese/milk products and the inflammation is almost non-existent. I don't know what your personal plans are (and this is highly intimate) but I had a full hysterectomy at 25, and the next day, I was a completely new woman. (no kids) I had the Davinci Robotic Procedure. As women, we want to hang on to our "parts" but we must also consider what they are taking from us. You took a big step out to share this aspect of your life, so I felt compelled to share an intimate part of my journey as well. I wish you all good things.

All our wheat in the US is GMO so that the plant will grow despite being saturated with glycosophate (Roundup) which is a powerful and toxic weed killer. I have been gluten free for 13 years. Helps but not a bloat cure all. I try to eat organic as much as possible. Gut health is very complicated and different for everyone. One size doesn't fit all when it comes to diet.

Brava! 👏🏽 Thank you so much for being brave enough to open up and share what is going on in your life. You’ve been going non-stop this past year! Admitting that you need help is definitely not a flaw, it is a strength whether it is with work or your mental health. You are helping others who haven’t yet admitted that they cannot (or should not) do it all judging from the number of the posts from mental health workers. I for one appreciate you sharing the tools that you have identified that the rest of us may want to use to have a healthier happier coming year. One thing that I was told when I was in this predicament was to build in regular break time for myself that I stuck to (unless there was a real emergency). A few hours a week or a day, a couple of days, a week or more, whatever worked, where I did something for me that I liked or wanted to do. A moment to breathe…. Hoping that the help you need with manifests soon!

The stiffness of joints, then irritation in my stomach, then my whole body became swollen one night after 1 small slice of pizza. A few hours later, my ankles became super painful and swollen. My tendons may have ruptured. Drs were very helpful, but they ruled out gout. I realized, it was the pizza. I had been doing keto for a few months. I knew food additives caused inflammation in my body. Lots of turmeric, ginger, antioxidants, and other foods like that, finally reduced the inflammation. Then, I realized soy caused a bit of inflammation, so I cut that. I don’t get the joint pain anymore. It was 1.5 year journey. Also, I’m a bit older than you, and menopause can also create changes in our mood. I’m not an anxious person, but I started experiencing this around 49. I remembered a video on Rhodiola supplements. 2nd day, that feeling was gone. If someone has mental health issues, they need to contact a doctor, but mine was only due to the hormonal changes. Now, I use it for focus and energy in the morning. It’s a very useful adaptogen.

Omg, same thing have been happening to me with my knees, I thought it was because I was a runner. All of last year every time I start an excercise that I love, I had to stop. I just went to the orthopedic Dr. last week they told me that it may be a torn meniscus and I can try PT for now. If I wan to be certain I will have to do a scan. Thanks for sharing. I

Love your videos! And glad you found a way to decrease your daily aches and pains. I had a similar experience with joint swelling/ pain, when sleeping or doing exercise, a few years ago. At the time, my spouse had switched to a gluten-free diet and suggested I try it to help with weight loss. I went gluten-free for a month (hard to do as a St. Lucian bread connoisseur lol) and most of my joint pain and swelling went away (did nothingfor my weight 🤷🏾‍♀️). And I was shocked! The effects of gluten on my body in the US frighteningly strong. And I do not want to go back to that pain. I hope you remain pain free in the new!

I’m glad you are not afraid to ask for help. I have this issue as well. have also noticed stiffness in my fingers when I wake up in the morning, too. I didn’t know if it was arthritis, or what. I’m going to eliminate wheat, I need to cut carbs anyway. I have also had fibroids removed. I think using hair relaxers is related to the reason Black women are plagued with fibroids.

Loved this video! Whilst I love fashion, I love truth and honesty more and that’s frankly lacking in the fashion realm. I live in Australia and have had a similar experience to yourself. When travelling and eating (a lot) of carbs in France and Italy, no gut problems, perfect skin etc. by comparison when eating wheat products in Australia, I am constantly bloated, my mental health plummets and my skin in poor. So I feel you girl. Gluten is also an irritant for a lot of people, especially if you have leaky gut, Sibo or autoimmune issues. I heard recently that sugar and carbs feed fibroids, pcos and other female reproductive issues. So going low sugar and low carb, will likely help you there. Good luck with your health journey, I hope this year is a powerful healer for you. This video was the catalyst for me to press “subscribe”, as I like to know the person behind the fashion as well. ❤

Thank you for your honesty and reflection Your number one priority is to look after yourself. While I marvel at how much creative content you put out, I always wondered how you are able to do this volume of work, especially during the frensy of fashion week all over the world. When you go to the Caribbean for vacation, turn off all devices and social media and immerse yourself in your me time. You are beautiful, stylish, creative, and inspiring please pace yourself for a healthy balanced life.

This was brill! Been following you for years. I could feel your anxiety, lack of motivation or just being tired. I get the diet thing having lived in Paris/Europe for some years. I get the fibroid thing having suffered and undergone major surgery. Getting back to normal is part physical and 80% mental. Beat cancer. Lost my Mom, my dog, had to move. One thing that has pulled me through it all is my passion, being resolute, exercise, House music, dancing, the creative energy of others and mos def: my love of fashion! It’s my drug of choice lol Your style and spirit motivate me and have pulled me through some dark and difficult times. Thanks and thanks for this real talk. Cheers

wheat in the US is often treated with glyphosate, an herbicide... and grains generally tend to crank up inflammation which produces issues with joints. I too, noticed that when I'm in France I can eat bread and cheese and not have any issues, not the case in the States...you can never go wrong with listening to your body and making any needed changes...

Wheat belly is no joke. After giving up wheat, I lost 50 pounds & acid reflux has totally disappeared. It was shocking - I was blaming my wild weight gain on genetics & the culprit turned out to be English muffins. Doing 12 miles of cardio a day & was puffed up like a balloon.

Karen, I am grateful you posted this and I am glad you are on a fantastic journey of health, healing and wellness...body, mind and soul. If helpful for folks on this thread, discernment is important when it comes to grocery shopping and eating out in general, but in the US (since that's the topic). I have never had issues eating bread in the US, BUT I have intentionally sought out bread that is locally made and make it a point to know the source and quality of their ingredients. This is not hard to do at all, and there are many smaller, local bread makers across the US with amazing products using traditional vs mass methods. I would not lump all bread in the US toge in the "bad" or "unhealthy" category. There are great quality breads...and they are easy to find. I travel a lot internationally as well and agree with many on this thread about the ingredients allowed in the US vs other countries, and the quality that produces. Nevertheless, there are healthful, clean products widely available in the US...even in bigger stores. We just need to pay more attention to the labels and make different shopping & eating decisions. I personally don't shop at stores like Safeway, Kroger, etc. I invest in my health shopping at other places (online and in person). People say groceries are expensive. But what do you value? If you can spend $800 on a pair of shoes or you receive clothing hauls every month or on some other cadence - maybe consider reducing this type of consumption in favor of shifting more funds towards investing in good quality foods. The saying, "Show me your bank account or credit account, and I can tell you what you value" has truth to it. If we value our health (mentally and physically) it will show in what we pay for. Balance is key Food for thought...
