This is why some livestock owners have livestock guardian dogs. They are with the flock all the time and will protect them from other dogs and threats.

I have high drive working dogs (disaster recovery dogs) and often times work on land with livestock and other animals. I now own my own livestock so that I can train my dogs to leave them be and work without redirection. Even before this I would not allow any of my dogs to be so aggressive or out of control. I can't say all my dogs are good, but the ones that are not will never be off leed when I leave my property. I am so sorry this is something you have to live with.

@@HermitLady Did you miss my first post in which I suggested fencing the nursery paddocks, which btw is thousands of dollars of capital outlay and hours of skilled labour requiring specialised equipment and handling heavy materials, which this couple may not have until after they sell some of their flock, if they have a good year. Logically, your argument has no legs for trespassing on private property; and is like telling everyone driving a vehicle on roads to wrap those in bubble wrap b/c one or two drivers refuse to follow the Law and might crash into them. The dog owner is breaking the law, the legal consequences are the Deterrent. Imo.

Here in California if a dog is worrying or harming your livestock you as the owner have the right to dispatch the dog. People learn quickly that there are consequences to allowing their pets to terrorize and kill someone else’s animals for fun. I don’t know what your laws are like there but if it isn’t the case where you are things need to change, this is unacceptable.

The law is the same in the UK. But not all farmers want to run around with a rifle the whole day and train well enough to be sure of hitting the dog and not the sheep. And they can't be there all the time. People are idiots and think the bad thing will never happen to them. The number of times I've had people allow their dogs to chase after my horse, barking and jumping at her hind legs. This is not just dangerous for me but extremely dangerous for the dog; one well-placed kick from the horse could kill it. Does it stop these people? Nope.

@@lonayork591 This is abusive dog ownership. Not everyone has a huge yard, and dogs need to be able to run around. However, obviously, the dog needs to be trained properly and put on a lead around livestock and if it doesn't have good recall, you need to find safe enclosed spaces to exercise it. And if people don't do that, they should be fined and banned from keeping dogs.

@@tfrtrouble idk where you're from, but letting dogs off-leash is highly illegal at my place, you get caught and have a big fat fine slapped onto you for doing so. even more if its a dangerous dog breed, if the dog needs to run get them a 20-ft leash, inconvenience, sure, however it at least guarantees control if your dog were to run off as you still have a say on how far or where they go. Never let your dogs off-leash, EVEN IF trained. shit happens that you cant control, maybe another dog pisses yours off and they go attack, maybe they just dart off all of a sudden, maybe you dont pay enough attention and all of a sudden you dont know where your dog is..I have both my dogs trained to heel off-leash, but thats for emergencies if my leash snaps. otherwise, if outside, its leash-only.

@@turtal2595 I wonder where you're from that ever letting a dog off a leash, even at a park or beach or in the forests is illegal? Sounds terrible. Where I am in Europe, it is totally normal and legal too outside of built up areas as long as your dog is under control (which a leash doesn't guarantee for big dogs) and with the caveat that they can't go off leash in certain places during bird nesting time. I can't imagine a place where people have high-energy dogs like collies or shepherds and never allow them to stretch their legs and run, or play fetch. That is awful. Yes, there is always a small risk, but owning a dog at all is always a risk. Most children killed by dogs are attacked in their home or the home of someone they know. And lettings people drive cars in public areas is a waaaaay bigger risk.

Are there no leash laws ?? Also, this is why dog owners must make sure their dog has total recall !! I would be terrified if I wasn’t around to monitor my sheep. Do you have any cameras around your fields, you obviously cannot trust these people who walk their dogs off leash. Last year Cammy (Sheep Game) put up signage everywhere about these situations and if memory serves me I think he installed some cameras as he rents property for some of his sheep. He had an incident recently, on I believe it was a field that his wife, Lizzie who herself is pregnant, had sheep (pregnant ewes) on.He chased down a dog ( did not kill it) and called the cops as well as spoke to the dogs owner. Shocking really that the dogs are permitted to be off leash like this. As a dog lover (You can see my photo) I cannot believe how stupid people are, recall is the absolue most important thing it is with having a dog because it can put the dog at risk for being hit by a vehicle or by being shot by someone. Where I have lived in Canada, there are leash laws so When walking my dog there was no issue, however on a couple of occasions I tripped and fell on the side of busy road while walking my Golden Retriever, yes he was on leash. I am clumsy, really clumsy. But, when I fell I dropped his leash and he went prancing along the path nonchalantly coming up to an intersection. I hollered “Come” and his name, and thank God he listened both times I fell. Nobody wants anybody or anything to be hurt. Now if you want to go off lead when hiking on trails and you aren’t worried about the wildlife fine. (We have no trails here where you walk through people’s fields)..

This happened at my place of work almost 20 years ago. The farm is located right outside a neighborhood, and one of the neighbors left their three dogs to roam for 2 weeks while on vacation, under the assumption that the dogs would find their own food. The dogs killed all the chickens, two of the three goats, most of the rabbits, and mauled our sheep and bigger goat. The dogs were caught in a trap and bit my boss on the arm, refusing to let go. The dogs were quickly euthanized, and the owners were charged with mistomeanor animal cruelty and banned from owning animals for life. This was before animal cruelty became a federal felony. The dogs’ human parents told the court they were not in the wrong and that it was natural to “let dogs be dogs”. It disgusts me to this day.

In the UK there are no other predators to worry about. Livestock Guardian breeds can get bored and actually end up attacking the animals they should be protecting because they don't have enough work to keep them occupied. Buying a Livestock Guardian puppy (not cheap) and putting all the effort into training it for the very rare occasion when someone passing by can't control their dogs doesn't seem like an economic solution.

I don't know if that's practical in your area, but have you considered life stock guardian dogs? They live with the life stock (whatever that is, sheep, cows, goats... you name it), they get trained to stay in their entrusted area/property and they deal with whatever predator posing a threat to the life stock apropriately.

I am so sorry that you all are going through this with unleashed dogs in your fields full of pregnant ewes. Let alone also with ewes and their lambs. People are careless with their dogs. They may be great pets but when a dog is off leash they often go feral with other animals and dogs. Maybe put signs on the fence line saying, “keep your dogs leashed or they will be shot if they are chasing livestock”. But harming is not in your heart and it shows you are a true animal lover. ❤️Maybe a livestock guardian dog will be a route to take. They can watch the sheep in any weather and 24/7. The LGD will be your security and your extra eyes. Hope things will be better for you all. ❤️🙏🏽

@ Dale Farm, not a farmer but love ❤ seeing the little lambs. So sweet. What about a Guard Dog like a Great Pyrenees Sheepdog. They blend in with most sheep ( they’re white ). I’m Canadian and seem to notice more and more of the breed around. The last province I lived, thee was a breeder just outside the city. I know earlier this month, Lizzie, Cammy Wilson’s, wife herself 30 weeks pregnant, had a dog in her field of pregnant ewes. (KZbin Cammy Sheep Game)

I live in the US and recently moved just 20 miles from suburb of the city to the city. Every time we tried to walk our dog a there was always loose dogs coming up to us. Since we are new we don’t know who the owners are if there are any, or what will happen if we were to let them get close enough to us so we have had to quit for now and just hang out in the back yard. We don’t want to stir up trouble because we are new, but dogs are meant to always be on a leash in this city and never roaming free. I truly hope you get some kind of resolution about this because it is truly unacceptable. I would think there were stronger laws about being able to protect your own property, livestock, and or your livelihood.

I would 100% get a gun. They can't be letting their dog do that, and if this has happened continuously without them wanting to abide by laws and regulations than that will be the end. They've had their fair share of warnings. Maybe they will learn to train their dogs off of it. I love love love dogs, but this cannot be happening. I'm so sorry to hear this. Heartbreaking situation.

In the US here where I live. Dogs going after the cattle with calves, goats with kids, and pregnant females of both. The farmers make an effort first time to chase off and find owners. Second time, if they know the owners, call the owners, otherwise scare off with a few loud noises. Third time, no owner dogs find themselves in a bad position, owned dogs get owners' called again with last warning. Fourth time with owner dogs, bad times. The dogs can cause miscarriages, injure the mamas and or babies, unalive babies, and in general cause more problems than is easily handled by the farmers of the harried livestock.

As a rancher (not sure what you guys call yourselves over there) if you’ve got livestock it’s up to you to protect them. You can’t expect others to do the right thing. Get some guardian dogs. Problem solved. You’re basically offering up your sheep at this point. Which is your fault as a rancher for not taking proper precautions to keep them safe from a known problem. You guys killed off all your predators (which was a terrible thing to do but you’re English after all) but dogs will always be an issue in any society. Or people. Hence why any responsible rancher has guardian dogs to protect their herd and flock. So again, at this point it’s all on you and your mistakes. Own up to it and do better by your livestock.

Foxes still. what a shit reply. This is not America Thank God. She is doing what she can with the situation in England. Best law that could be passed is ALL dogs on leads at ALL times, as owners are so stupidly irresponsible. You can get long training leads for when there is space to let it out longer but the dog is never completely loose to cause trouble. Our Patterdale is never off a generous lead and is quite happy. Farmers need to carry a gun and deal with the dog as they did before. I think far more people would keep their dog on a lead then!
