what some call railroad jacks or simplex jacks some are definitely better than others, they will all do what a jack is supposed to do but when it comes time to lower the jack thats where the difference is

I bought a Buckeye jack last year and just used it to jack up a trailer. Worked great going both up and down. I made sure to buy one that had the ability to be lowered safely after this video. Thank you for the advice

I just bought a Simplex No.185 Jack from a metal scrap yard today while selling my scrap aluminum beer cans (60 cents a pound today !). I asked the owner if he had any old-style car bumper jacks (they are handy for removing fence posts, etc), and he said to go look in his "Treasure Shop"... no bumper style jacks there, but this Simplex 185 caught my eye... took me a few minutes to figure out how it worked, and it works just fine... cost me $20... no handle, but a good 1" steel pipe should work great ! I'm going to clean it up a bit, and try using it to pull out a couple of bushes my wife wants removed... I would get stuck in the yard using my truck, so I will give it a go !

I have both of these Jacks Both are Simplex. The one you don't like and I don't either (the 101) is missing the reversing lever. It works better with the lever installed. The lever mounts on the stud on the side of the handle tube and holds back one of the raising levers in order to lower it.

How do I open the door over the mechanism? It is loose but will not let me open it to lube.

Good jack warning! I place wooden dunnage beneath my loads and lower in stages when using the inferior jack style (often used by Duff-Norton).

I always just heard them called railroad jacks but the last one reminds me of these things that can pull or push that you can buy now. I got one to work once and that's why I don't have one. Looks like a Wisconsin 2-banger behind. Good video! Make that a 1-banger on a pump.

Yeah thats a 3 inch pump in the back ground. Where I work during the day decided to go a different way and did away with construction and focus on ready mixed concrete so the shed got cleaned out in there and my old mans shed got more junked up, but we couldn't stand to see some of this kind of stuff get thrown away or scrapped. theres more around that i havent got uploaded yet

@@ofdirtandiron2868 That's a sweet old pump. I always thought a lot of Wisconsin engines. Did a lot with the V-4's on pumps and was around them on Mayco p-gravel concrete pumps. Tough engines and you can tell one as far as you can hear it. Hope you get the HD-5 going. It does me good to hear the bark of a bus motor.

@@lewiemcneely9143 ah yes the sound of a wisconsin great old motor, just dont shut em off till your done with em for the day. we have a few v-4s around in the straw blower, air compressor, and stump grinder works good to have that many of the same engine... parts are never to far away

@@ofdirtandiron2868 True but you don't need many parts for them because they just keep on going.

@@lewiemcneely9143 thats true but we've had fuel pump problems and being able to go pull a starter off one that aint being used at the moment is convenient and when you get parts for one it takes care of three or four machines. my old man is a firm believer in having "parts machines" he brought home an old v-4 this fall that was locked up. he cut it off an old forage harvester that was in a hedgerow on a farm we were working on and so it goes. always good to hear from you thanks for watching

I have a simplex with a similar mechanism to the one you don't like. I have a Joyce similar to your Simplex and much prefer it.
