before the 2010's texture artists were painting directly on 3D geometry. I know because I was a professional 3D artist. Many of of your statements are flawed by poor research.

I just want to take a minute to talk about a pipe i saw in tony hawks underground 2. Its ps2 era so everything is low res and low poly. I saw a good looking pipe and then went to the side only to find out IT WAS FLAT. Some artist just drew it beautifully and the bitmap did a great job of making it look 3D. (Bitmap or bumpmap? Im still learning that. Only reason i know it exists is from modding an oblivion mod)
@thedefaultcube1218
@thedefaultcube1218 3 ай бұрын
You are probably referring to a bump map. It's the blueish purple looking map that tells light how to bounce off it, faking detail
@icephoenix174

@@thedefaultcube1218 yeah I couldn't remember. That mod just added posters to oblivion. I thought modifying it would be easy: just replace the image. I found out the mad man made a displacement map, bit map, bump map, and I think even more. For posters xD
@thedefaultcube1218

@icephoenix174 that's another of textures for a poster lol. I would just use an image texture plugged into a PBR and turn up the gloss to make it feel plastic. Textures are cool, did you know aside from the color, all those images (even if they seem colored) are just black and white information packed into channels. So you can do what's called texture packing and fit different maps into each of the RGB and even the alpha channel.

So did per polygon texture mapping (PTEX or similar) ever make it into Blender?, since there are no words to describe how much I loath messing about with UV maps!

@@tullman3craggs102 > Not exactly what I was talking about, since vertex painting has been around since the 90s AFAIK , and is fairly limited in the uses it can provide, PTEX (and the other attempts like it) on the other hand replaces all the layers of pixel data you'd normally attach to UV maps.

Can you do a video about what courses we should take? Blender - texture painting.
@DimitriX-zq1dr
@DimitriX-zq1dr 3 ай бұрын
The video is a complete nothing burger and the text is likely shat out by ChatGPT. So many things wrong or misleading. Texture mapping is "breaking the surface into smaller objects" seriously? It is projection of 3d surface on 2d plane so 2d image can be used as a texture. Same thing, with "texture painting is more hardware demanding"; the only thing that affects performance of the texture is its resolution and bit depth, doesn't matter if it was painted or simply a square filled with solid color. The main topic of the video is false dichotomy. Texture mapping is essential step of model preparation, without it you cannot even paint textures. And it is almost impossible to use photos "as is", without any sort of editing (including painting), for texturing 3d objects.

As an avid user of chatgpt, there is no world where it can generate this level of writing, if it does, humanity is doomed, it is free, you can go ahead and write a video with the same quality with Ai. (ps: you can't) "breaking the surface into smaller objects" is rhehotic writing supported by showing the 2D surfaces with the editing, anyone will get the idea, and he literary said 2D surfaces two sentences after that. So why did you overlook that in your comment? Texture Painting is indeed more demanding with many calculations happening, and not even close than UV Mapping with one click, let's not pretend it's not. Smart masks and nodes are demanding, ask anyone and they will tell you that. Texture mapping is indeed essential step of model preparation, without it you cannot even paint textures as it was mentionned in the video. And you can indeed use the photos as is, Ian Hubert made an entire career out of it. I get the channel owner is very shady with his promotional practices, I'm neither with him nor with you, but it doesn't justify lying because of it. Or maybe you lack the skills and knowledge, the weird CG furry animations you make is nothing to brag about.

@@jangrang5594My points still stand, try harder, fanboy. His definition of UV mapping is the most ass backwards and misleading as possible. UV map can be a single continuous piece, if the object is simple or you can bear with some texture distortions. And even he did refer to performance of painting algorithm vs uv mapping, not performance of using a painted texture itself, it is still not a good argument, since if your computer can run 3d software at all, it'll support a 3d painting program as well. He admits that both texture mapping and painting are essential parts of the texturing process? well, he admits that his video is a waste of time then. Since he pretends that you must choose between the two. And I bet you cannot prove that Ian Hubert never paints or edits his textures, that would be a pointless handicap to his workflow. His tutorials are called "lazy" for a reason: it's a shit practice in most cases other than background objects, as it'll mean poor texture space usage and specific photo-related defects you'll still have to paint over. And if you are going to insult my skills, the work I have still makes me more qualified to speak on the topic than you. You shown nothing than being a furry hater. P.s. humanity is doomed anyway if we'll continue to rely on (de)generative AI

@@jangrang5594Try harder. His definitions for things like texture mapping and texture painting are more contrived than humanly possible. Texture map can be a single continuous island; breaking the model into smaller fragments is literally the last thing anyone thinks UV mapping is for. Same with his idea of texture painting: if the texture was painted in Photoshop and then mapped on a model, it is no longer involves texture painting according to him. He could refer to painting tools themselves as more demanding, yes, but it is still a bad argument, since if your computer can run a 3d program in 2024, it can handle 3d painting tools as well. And if the poster admits that both mapping and painting are essential, he admits that whole video is a waste of time, as he makes it look like you need to chose between these two. Considering Ian Hubert, can you even prove he never paints or edits his textures? That would be pointless handicap. His tutorials are called "lazy" for a reason; it will be a bad practice in most cases other than background objects.Finally, dismissing me because of furry content? I bet it still requires more skill and knowledge than what you do in CG
