I researched a year, put down a non refundable deposit, waited several months, drove for hours to a big airport to pick up my puppy, who came from a very reputable breeder in Ontario, Canada. I bought pet insurance, signed up for an on-line class with a very good trainer and spent hundreds of hours working with her and training her. I waited until she was 22 months old to spay her (a condition of getting her papers) and had no trouble responsibly managing 3 heat cycles. She now has her CGC, and is my balance and mobility service dog who goes with me everywhere. I needed a dog bred to work, although both parents are also show champions, whose temperament and health were carefully selected. I had 2 rescue dogs who had passed away just before I got my girl, 13 & 14 years of age. I needed a dog for a specific purpose and I couldn’t find such a dog at the shelter, only pit bulls. I have rescued lost dogs, healed them and placed them in forever homes, and it was expensive. Now, I just want to love and enjoy my dog, knowing she is truly my partner. And if anything happens to me, her breeder will take her back, at any age. Robert, I couldn’t agree with you more!

I started tearing up when you started talking about Goofy. I lost my Peanut (golden retriever) of 8 yrs 4 yrs ago. I was so heartbroken and depressed that I was so desperate to fill that void and ended up getting my Gsd Pepper from a backyard breeder on Craigslist for $500. At the the time I had no idea what a backyard breeder was and I couldn’t get approved for a shelter dog bc I lived in a townhouse without a yard. Pepper had so many behavioral issues (reactivness, severe resource guarding, and so much more) but I spent 1000s of hrs poring over online trainers and even bought a few online courses. Fast forward 4 yrs.. and I can’t imagine my life without my Pepper who is the most perfect dog since she was 2 yrs old. But I devoted my life to giving my dog the best life (raw fed, off leash trained, goes everywhere with me..). I guess my question is… how do u feel about ppl like me? I feel so ashamed for getting a backyard bred dog, but I would never give up on her bc of her issues. And I didn’t know any better at the time…

Thank you for this topic! I adopted a pit mix from the shelter 11 years ago that turned out to be a dangerous dog. The shelter was not honest about his history. I had to either crate him or carry a broom with me after he tried to come after me in my bathroom. It was exhausting, I couldn’t trust him and eventually he was going to hurt me. I had to take him back to the shelter, I was distraught. Even when I explained what happened the shelter employees were absolutely horrible to me. It took a long time for me to heal and be able to have another dog in my home. I currently have Doberman mix who was a pediatric neuter, he’s certainly a challenge but I adore him and can’t imagine my life without him. He has had health and behavioral problems because of the early neuter but I am committed to giving him ten best life possible. Dogs give us so much, they deserve better.

This is exactly why I kept my pit baby I bottle fed for one of our local shelters. He has neuro issues, but I kept him and he is the love of my life! I am not blind to his temperament! I knew he was dangerous very early, but had already fallen in love with him and couldn’t put him down. I’ve just kept everyone else safe from him. He is not healthy now and is 11.5, but VERY happy!

Spaced the start time. I literally saved my first dog at 8yrs old in '65 and Dad was in Vietnam on what would be his second and last tour and moved us to Okinawa. Yeah, I know, I'm old. Dog was gutted by guys that broke into a house and the dog attacked, but lost. No one could get close to the dog afterward except me. A gift I have been using ever since. The dog got over the trauma after some months and I was credited me with saving him. I now have been doing this with dogs walking the street. I came across a dog up in the Arizona mountains in winter snow. I've had a coworker bring me their Malinois/Red heeler mix that they were going to have euthanized. I have the time, energy and money to keep 4 dogs at a time. It's expensive, heart breaking and a lot of work, but I chose this path. Leo the Malinois brought me to you. I used to go to the library to learn all I could about each dog I cared for based on what I and my vet thought it was. I would then identify what it liked most and what it's biggest fear or trigger was in order to gain as much control as soon as I could, specially if it was having emotional and self control problems, which the Malinois certainly was. -----The story I was told during about a half an hour talk was, Stepdaughter found this and it's supposed sibling in someone's yard as puppies. Yeah, I didn't believe it either. Stepdaughter and stepmom were 180 degrees out of phase on what Leo was and wasn't allowed to do. They yelled at and smacked him around and praised him for the same action. He snapped according to them and nipped a few people, including the mailman and someone in their complex, which got them an ultimatum of get out or have the dog euthanized. That's where I come in. By the time our talk was over they were embarrassed and still ignorant and I was thoroughly pissed off. I am extremely appalled by the way we handle dog owners and breeders and the situation that exists in most shelters. Thank you for what you're doing. Leo has come a long way, but you can tell he's been through it.

Thank you for saying this! I have rescued dogs for the past 40 years, I’m 61 and wanted a German shepherd. I decided I wanted a dog I could take anywhere and has been bred for health and temperament. I didn’t want to go to a shelter bc I didn’t want any surprises (mainly bc 95% of my rescues have been reactive and or aggressive). I kept feeling like I had to justify my decision and felt guilty for it. Some people in my “orbit” tried to convince me that there are plenty of pure bred shepherds in shelters. I didn’t want to risk it. I found my PERFECT match and so happy I did. On another note, I do have a rescued pit that I bottle fed him and took care of him and now 11.5 years later he is still dangerous regardless of training. He had a big gash on top of his head and showed signs of neuro issues from the beginning. I am VERY careful with him. He is never outside without me, I can’t take him for walks bc I worry about unleashed dogs and or unleashed children. He is a very happy baby and our bond is unbelievably strong. I love this boy so much. That being said he should’ve prob been put down in the beginning. If I had released him to a shelter as a baby, I feel certain he would’ve attacked and injured someone. Unfortunately I wrongly thought he would be ok with a puppy….he was not. I am now almost 2 years having them completely separate. Crate and Rotate is my life right now!

Robert i completely agree. I see these videos for dogs or cats that have suffered catasrophic injury or were so sick tge KINDEST r action would be to provide the last act of kindness in stead of attempting the heroics to save an animal that will live its life traumatized. I use to work with a horse rescue in my early 20's in S. FLORIDA. THE AMOUNT OF NEGLECT AND ABUSE is beyond evil. I went for a rescue of 10 horses that had been abandoned. 2 were dead when we got there. They were all within a week of dying. We buried the 2 and loaded the rest. Vet drew blood 6 of the 8 survivors had VEE Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis which there was no cure 2 horses left were sad despondent but salvegable. The rescue refused to put the 6 six horses down and instead decided they were going to show the almighty that they knew better Those 6 used up rediculous amount of resources that could have gone to save horses that were viable and could be rehabd and rehomed. Instead all 6 of the VEE infected horses died a miserable preventable death. I quit working with them but told the when i left that NOT EVERY ANIMAL CAN BE SAVED. i was cursed out and even spit on. Some animals are so physically damaged or mentally and emotionally traumatized that the final act of kindness is just that.

Finally got to listen, it's a hard listen if you're the "all dogs should be saved" type. Unfortunatley that's not how the real world works and you'd be a fool to think this way. I'd much rather believe a person that's worked with a lot of dogs in shelters hands on than someone that has just been there here and there to clean and volunteer just to be there. It's a hard thing to hear when he says it but Robert is right. If you believe these dogs are all saved at one place or another your head is in the sand. They just vanish into good homes? There aren't enough people with the skill to handle these types of dogs and even if there were they sure as shit wouldn't get adopted because they'd not want that on their conscience knowing a bad history. Anyways, if you can't take the time to actually listen then I don't think you've got a place to comment. He didn't just make this stuff up. At a point you've just gotta exercise some common sense and follow the money. As for the "No bad Dogs army", he's a trainer too, but he's dealing with people that are paying him, taking it seriously and in a lot of cases learning to manage their dog because they want to put forth the effort and learn.I believe he'd tell someone if they weren't capable as an owner. Shelters aren't doing that same thing when they knowingly adopt a dog out with a history but just conviently omit or reword things.

I did the whole shlep, research etc, got my GSD from a really good breeder BUT Nature decided to make my GSD a 1 in a 1000 fluke of Nature and it turns out he is an Anorchid. It is not the breeder's fault, obviously, but my dog is proof of how important Hormones are. Because he was born without hormones he is a mess, physically and metally. But, as a professional in the dog field I have worked very hard with him and he has turned out brilliantly. To think of the reactivity and aggression I had to deal with he turned out amazingly - its about effort, the right effort to help a dog like this. Physically though he has chronic Arthritis that is causing loads of issues and he will no doubt end up with Osteoporosis later on in life due to again, no hormones to protect his bones. I do feed him a DIY BARF diet with plenty natural "help" and he is thriving and we have his physical issues under control. He is a happy dog, living his best life. A dog like have is not for all people. Had he ended up elsewhere, or gone back to his breeder he would have been put down as he cannot be bred, cannot be shown and has to many physical issues to do sports with.

ABSOFREAKINGLUTELY!!! I'm getting so tired of local rescues taking animals directly from owners. It's a load of bs in my opinion. Those people turn around and get another animal later on. Some do it right away. Rescues also spend so much money on vetting senior pets - like why? Same question for not abort spaying upon intake. I get if they're about to pop, but there is no way to guarantee anything for those puppies. My local shelter has recently started the no kill quest and we suddenly have the funding to build a new shelter- which is great and absolutely needed - but now I know why.

Pet food, supplies, medication... are not ready like air. Some farmers, workers, drivers.... work their butts to produce those things, while companies making sure they still make profit. Majority of dogs can start mate and breed under one year. They're usually have multiple puppies per , some even large litter. And usually a female dog goes into heat 2 times a year. Do the math. Just follow the money and anyone would understand the motives behind this never-ending cycle of no kill rescue.

That’s true about ‘even though they are expensive, they are not necessarily good’. During the pandemic it was an expensive feeding frenzy selling dogs. It happened in the horse world too. It was hard to work out what was good or not. I have a dog who has issues, I love him to bits,he’s not a dangerous dog,but he has some genetic traits that cause him to be less balanced and he has to be managed. We trained, still train and he has a good life. The trainer said he could have easily been a ‘shelter dog’, in the too hard basket. I make sure he is set up for success and don’t put him in situations where I think he will get nervous and possibly fail. I will never buy a dog like this again. I will do more research in the future in regards to the breeder. I’ll be very,very picky about the breeder.

I hate the fact that you are right. I love dogs far more than people . I live on a remote farm with bad predator problems so my farm dogs do have the ability and will to kill. I work with them most every day but if a person came on the farm with bad intentions 911 would be 20 minutes if I was lucky. I also need a dog that will not attack a delivery person or neighbor. I realize I am working on a fine line and do worry.I pick my dogs carefully but I need a dog able to take care of business. So far the dogs have not engaged a person but coyote problems start in the winter and the last 2 years the coyote behavior has changed. They have never packed before but now I see them in packs. I worry about the wrong person showing up , getting bitten and my dogs taken.

Absolutely great video. I am a licensed breeder in the UK and the dynamics between breeders/dog owners/rescue centres(ers) and so many other factions are so very much intertwined. I breed Welsh Springer Spaniels and I have imported dogs from USA and had grief for testing these dogs for Brucella Canis. It is all so messed up right across the board.

"We can save them all" is one of those perfectionistic ideals that get us all into big trouble. Not every litter of puppies is carefully planned to produce only physically healthy, mentally balanced offspring. If that were true, shelters wouldn't be crammed with misbegotten and ill-cared for dogs all the time. The rescue groups and shelters: are they the enablers, the codependents, of the irresponsible breeders? Aren't they just easing the consciences of people who breed puppies only for money?

This is why I am and have become so against the idea that all dogs deserve a second chance. When these dogs are not put down and kept alive, they OVERWHELMINGLY don't get the 'rehabilitation' they require to be a part of society. They get rehomed with someone who is willing to put up with their behavior, they do a mediocre job at controlling them, and either that dog is confined in a home for the rest of it's life which is no way for a dog to live, or every dog in the area is now at huge risk every time that dog is outside. In my neighborhood, there's a severly dog aggressive XL bully, and a very reactive Rottweiler. Both dogs are on a harness, neither of them wear muzzles, and both owners struggle tremendously walking these dogs outside. I'm so tired of seeing smashed mouth breeds on steroids being owned by foolish, unqualified owners who think they're doing these dogs some noble favor. It's not fair to everyone else in the neighborhood. And these dogs may not have killed a dog before, but these are the kinds of hands they tend to fall into when given a "second chance". Because dog sanctuaries do not exist, and Disney fairytale endings do not exist for dangerous dogs either. Side note, it's no shocker that there are plenty of stupid people in my neighborhood who think it's adorable to let their dogs off leash that do not have one shred of recall adherence. It is a matter of when, not if, those dogs run up to one of these other two and thatll be the end of it. People are both way too sensitive and yet way too apathetic about dogs and dog behavior, it's insane to me.

Over the years of owning dogs and breeding, I've found that genetic aggression can't be managed by people who are not mentally strong enough to enforce the command. Yes, I agree that not every dog can be saved; the spirit medium in me tells me they aren't meant to be. Rescues or shelters have no knowledge of aggressive dogs. We've shelters in the UK loaded with Pits and other aggressive dogs, and yet they're "fur babies", and they've rescued them for the coin they bring. Humanising these animals isn't doing them any favours, not one bit.

I've bought my last 4 dogs, a malinois in the 90s a beauceron in 2008 a pyrenean shepherd in 2020 a catalan sheepdog in 2004. All t.hese dogs would have go back to t.he breeder if the owner cant keep them. I train my dogs and they become part of my family. I no more would dump my dog at a shelter than i would dump one of my kids at an orphanage.

Shop around when it comes to veterinary care too. Look at mixed large and small animal clinics, my dog and cat have always received great care at a small clinic close to me. Also I have yet to have a procedure cost over $300. And one procedure was laser surgery!

There are so many 'nice' dogs needing homes- UK suffered with loads of Romanian dogs being sold on to novice owners that were extremely aggressive. Turkish Kangals too that bit people who had 'adopted' them. Most people aren't good at training dogs with aggression.

There are NOT MANY family that can afford (more) dogs around. Keeping dogs is not cheap even good well trained dogs. Beside financial aspect, time to spend with dog is also important. Shelters and no kill rescues often make salesman advertise to paint dogs as merchandises. This creates false sense capability, affordability to make "sale". In reality, the demand even for very good dogs are not very high. Even professional trainers with decent income wouldn't have more than handful of dogs, if they are not into breeding and selling dogs themselves. How can someone work 8-5, having children have multiple dogs?

I think that until shelters are held accountable in a financial sense for adopting out dogs whose history is deliberately obscured or missing, or adopting out dogs to people who aren’t capable of managing a difficult dog, nothing will change. I think that it’s more than likely that behind most horrific dog incidents, there is a history of problematic and escalating behaviors. Shelters are all about the numbers game, and until they’re held accountable - much like a bartender is held accountable for serving alcohol when there is an accident caused by a patron - I don’t see any reduction in these tragic and preventable incidents.

Homeopathic remedies are excellent for behavioural problems as well as medical problems, unfortunately most vets don't know anything about it. I took on a rescue with behavioural problems and medical issues, I took him to a natural vet. He prescribed probiotics and prebiotics, a natural diet, and two homeopathic remedies. I worked with the dog and he is now all ok. As a responsible owner I did everything that was needed to sort this dog out. But how many are prepared to do this, not many unfortunately.

I have rescued and rehabbed several dogs. I was sent 1 that I was lied to about. My 2 dogs let me know right away that he was, at least, unbalanced. After biting about 4 people in 1 month or less, I demanded truth from the guy who sent him to me. He was beaten by a woman he used to board him while he was offshore working. I had to go through the pain of having him put down. Not all did can be saved. My 2 docile huskies have me the 1st warning. We need to understand who can be saved and who cannot. It's not fair to the animals to not do that when they are suffering, whether physically or mentally or both.

Damn why are we bringing rescue dogs in from 3rd world countries when we have a crisis of our own? I live in TX and its bad. Unpopular opinion but I love bully breeds. We need actual breeders to come to the forefront and make buying these dogs from reputable breeders more prominant. I know most people say there are plenty in shelters but man its a gamble. Most are great but the ones we had were nightmares...and I was already experienced with the breed. Finding a reputable breeder for Staffies (Pitbulls) has been so hard. I feel like when you want those kinds of powerful dogs you owe it to the breed to find one that is well bred and an ambassador to its breed. Same with my American Bulldog. I looked for over 2 years. They're so much more than thug dogs. My best friend for 17 years was a pitbull/boxer mix. She raised me and helped raise my daughter in her golden years. American Bulldogs and Corsos are exploding in popularity and it scares me for the breed. Same with the Mal. Social Media is adding to the problem.

I disagree that anyone who rehomes a dog should never be allowed another dog. I have rehomed a cat (not through a shelter i gave her directly to someone) who was not a good fit for me. She was highly anxious, in a way that made my anxiety way worse. She was aggressive towards my other cat and terrified her, drew blood on another cat. She was terrified of my dog. I have a cat and dog now who are a much better fit.

I wonder if zoochosis could be a contributing factor to all of these dangerous dog attacks. Zoochosis is a form of psychosis that develops in animals held captive in zoos or at home. Most often, it manifests in what are called stereotypic behaviors, or stereotypies, which are often monotonous, obsessive, repetitive actions that serve no purpose (in a domestic dogs case aggression for no reason). Stated plainly, zoochosis is mental anguish made visible by abnormal behavior, and it’s a common indicator of poor welfare. Captivity with little to no mental and physical stimulation can be a contributing factor. combine this with poor breeding practices and an owner who is not physically equipped to deal with a large powerful dog and you have a recipe for disaster.

The problem with your ideas are simply what you stated: "people are stupid". No kill shelters will always be popular because kill shelters are killing perfectly good dogs along with the bad based on how full they are and how long the animal has been there.

Please don’t assume all women are emotional about rescueing every single dog . The problem we see is the shelters do not have experienced canine behaviourists or dog handlers . The big charitable animal protection and prevention of cruelty know the square root of zero about behaviour or dog handling and the killing is not in the thousands but in the millions. Many good dogs are just murdered so we need rehabilitation centres run by people like you who can properly assess a dogs temperament . Micro chip every dog yes . All producers need to be responsible for what they produce. Animal Control contracts are big business directors should be certified and it is so easy to obtain a diploma in canine behaviour and be paid six figure salary but know nothing because they haven’t handled a single dog. I am the good breeder you describe . It is very hard to buy a dog from me as buyers must have me for 17 years. I would like to share improvements I have written because I am sickened by so many innocent dogs that are seized for no good reason at all because they cannot read a canine situation. Then abuse their power to kill.

I prefer to buy my dogs from reputable breeders. 1 I'm able to pick a dog with a personality i want 2 the breed I like the only rescues available have medical and behavioral issues I don't want to deal with

Why should anyone not support ethical reputable breeders? Dogs just come out of thin air that hounded into shelters? Or they more often than not come from backyard breeding and puppy mill operations? Are you saying backyard breeding produce good dogs? Show me a dog from shelter without any traceable pedigree being on podium at national IGP, PSA, Modio Ring... Those who know understand what is written in the contract know that breeders can legally assume ownership of neglected dog without having to refund a cent. And ethical breeders would make sure to have the dogs back in these cases. Can you stop displaying your ignorance?

Ignorant people spend lots of money for nothing...I am sitting for two pure breed hunting dogs right now...PURE breed, the owner paid about 6K for each one and guess what...both have issues, different issues by they have behavioral problems which i am working to correct...one have joint problems and he is only two years old...the female is aggressive, insecure and destructive...so genes, the person who had her in a kennel did not work with her as should... then i found a dog on the street, that behaves pretty good, but has issues as well due to be on the street for so long, but overall behaves better than the two expensive dogs...and I have four dogs, Yorkie, Labrapoodle, and Belgian M...All rescued from the street, all dumped, all loving dogs that had to be retrained and tough new behaviors...and them were free, from idiots who paid a lot of money and then dump them because too much work, health issues or did not wanted anymore...

I haven't watched this yet and thought I love dogs, they shouldn't all be saved. There are dogs that exist that are just wired wrong and are not fit for society. People that are able to manage dogs like this are few and far between and why should they burden themselves with such a task constantly? To save a bad gene pool? At a certain point you have to be a realist. A lot can be saved but not all should.

@@truthhurts5158 No they shouldn't. A dog that is brain damaged by abuse will never be safe. Or happy. I had 1 like that and he bit everyone except me, and I'm sure that would have happened eventually. I then found out he had been beaten with a pipe in a roll of wrapping paper. I had been lied to when I was asked to rehab him. He had brain damage and my 2 huskies were the first to ring the alarm bell. I had to put him down before he really hurt someone. My friend needed stitches because he bit him. I could do it or the authorities would after a few complaints. I did it of course. Not all dogs can be fixed and that is a very dangerous situation to not acknowledge that. I rehabbed several dogs over the years and I know some will never be safe or happy due to previous abuse.

With all the negativity in the world, I find it hard to watch your video, but your title seems kind of cruel; I rescued a dog that was biting my whole family & we’ve loved him regardless & now we haven’t had a incident in quite a while, your title I feel could of been associated with me thinking about not saving our dog & I just want to say that I & my family with no dog training g experience were able to stop his violent attacks & so I hope Everbody continues to fight for animals & there well being & to try & save them all…Maybe work on your word choice & balance the title our a bit it could give off 411 that could cause someone to allow a animal to die instead of rehabilitating it back to a happier state of being

I know what you are saying, but you and your family are some of the lucky ones. There are dogs out there that never change because they have an actual mental issue and so the most humane thing to do is have them put down. It's a sad reality, but it's the truth. I wish I could save all dogs but it's not realistic.

How can. Just because it hasn't reoccurred for a while doesn't mean it . A dog even bites their loved one, what would that dog do strangers by "accident"? Can you easily stop the attack on strangers? You know your dog eager to bite, it's your responsibility to train your dog and get it under control right? Majority of dogs can start mate and breed under one year. They're usually have multiple puppies per , some even large litter. And usually a female dog goes into heat 2 times a year. Do the math. See how easily dog population can multiply out of control. There are plenty of dogs out there. Pick the good one and stop the practices that promote breeding bad dogs. You make excuses ready for backyard breeders and distort the message of what a normal dog would be. You're part of the problem.

Ask yourself can all criminals psychos be saved? No. You lucked out that your aggressive dog is not a severe case & so far can be managed. Different ppl have different definitions of a dog bite. Some ppl call a dog nipping or mouthing ppl a dog bite vs a dog bite that looks like a person was attacked by a shark, hence the nickname some dogs get “land shark”. Robert’s topic is VERY necessary. I have interacted with rescues & shelters and their available spots are being filled with unwanted problematic dogs (sick, elderly, antisocial, aggressive, etc). These dogs take up spots/resources that awesome kind loving dogs that would be adopted, but instead are murdered due to No Vacancy.

@@equiptheangels7093 this sort of thing doesn't need any sugar coating. As he has stated, there needs to be more pressure on the people letting things like this happen. Just because your dog has become a little more comfortable and less bitey doesn't mean it will never be an issue with your family in the future. You can watch previous videos on Roberts channel as I know he's discussed this risk. He's discussed it in his videos about having multiple pets in the household and prolonging the inevitable. I personally wouldn't be putting my children at risk with a dog who has bite history, period. No matter the scale or reasoning of bite.

When my husband was a little boy, his mom owned a basset hound dog. Well one day he flipped out of nowhere, and bit her and drew lots of blood. So, she had him put down because she never would trust that dog again, especially around her son. Yes that's very sad, but a mama puts her child first. I absolutely love my dog, but my daughter will always come first no matter what. Edit to say: I never ever see my beautiful loving German Shepherd doing something like that. She is AMAZING with our daughter. My mother-in-laws dog clearly had mental issues prior to this outburst.
