You don’t need to use core parking on the 9900x or 9950x. PC guide tested core parking enabled vs off and lost performance with it enabled. It only makes sense for the 12 and 16 core X3d chips. I am guessing AMD recommended it for potential power savings but, it’s absolutely worthless for the most part and isn’t required.
@MoBeigiАй бұрын
I was under the impression they needed core parking because unlike the 7900x/7950x, these chips seem to have a much higher latency of 200ns between cores on different CCDs. So it introduces a bottleneck even though both CCDs are the sae (and there is no 3d v-cache). EDIT: However, it seems like AMD has improved this issue via BIOS updates since. So you may not notice it when running with no core packing and early reviews of the CPU online will not have been with the BIOS improvements making them irrelevant.

The need for parking one CCD is not a new thing, it's just the option being available for non-X3D models that is really new. It's been an issue for some games since Zen2. It's also why the concept of dual stacked v-cache doesn't make sense.
@Ray88G5 ай бұрын
There is way two park the cores . But really what we all need is larger L2 cache . Then everyone would benefit .
@blkspade234 ай бұрын
@@Ray88G You seem to be missing the point I was making about why there is a need for core parking. It's also a matter of some misattributing the latency issue with games to asymmetric cache in R9s. You wrote L2, which I'm sure would have its own benefits, unless you meant L3 which hasn't been benefitting much of anything else outside of games and some Linux tasks.
@RobBCactive4 ай бұрын
Dual stack V-cache DOES make sense when you're doing data analysis or engineering calculations like CFD. The larger L3 can massively speed up each CCD while improving power efficiency due to avoiding read/write to memory. What YOU don't do is run a single instance across all cores, instead have 2 running independent tasks, with the cores and cache close together. Typical "productivity" apps are processing streams of data in relatively small chunks that can fit in L1/L2 which is why Intel Economy cores scored well in typical PC benchmarks.
@RobBCactive4 ай бұрын
@@Ray88GLarge L2 suffers a performance hit due to higher access latency and as core count increases the inter core cache coherency protocol is seeing vastly more messages which go off die, because local copies can be invalidated while writes have to invalidate stale copies to maintain memory consistency. The desire for large cross die L2 means the implementation will have the characteristics of L3. AMD's 8c/16t CCD with a local L3 scales well in server which run many independent jobs which kept to a single CCX.
@RobBCactive4 ай бұрын
@@blkspade23games aren't optimised for large core counts, they're written to use cache well on typical machines and writing custom code to say use a 2nd CCX for ancillary tasks, while the core game runs its 4 or 5 tightly coupled threads on another simply isn't commercially viable. Those chips run games well enough while the mainstream potential buyers have older hardware like quad cores, so optimisation for the low end can improve sales. Core parking is to save power and stop Windows migrating threads erroneously onto the 2nd CCX which incurs latency penalties. Most games aren't even using 6c fully with cache size & frequency superior to high core count.

@45eno3 ай бұрын
I would say you are out of touch with your comment. He isn't saying they can't play games. These are bad buys for GAMERS due to the cost. It's not that gamers can't game on them. But for gamer first buyers they could easily spend less like $400 on a 7800X3D which would be better suited for their needs. So yes 5900x,5950x,7900x,7950x,9900x,9950x can all work for gaming but they are poor buys for gamers that don't do heavy production work. Fast IPC and extra CACHE for cheaper than a high core count CPU is a better use of money for gamers needs. No one is saying some heavy core count CPU geared towards productivity can't be gamed on. For example a 7600x 6core for $180 will be a better buy than a 5950x 16core for $300 for those gaming. EVEN at 4k ULTRA detail. 1% lows can even be improved in high GPU heavy configurations with a better faster IPC CPU's or X3D cpus.

Great you game and do productivity tasks, well sounds like these sort of CPU's is a good fit for you. For strictly gamers it's not a great choice to pick vanilla X high core count CPU's like the 7950X when you can get far better FPS performance using a less productivity and more gaming focused CPU. Again I think you critique is far more out of touch than the guys title or video when you actually try to understand the meaning behind the title. There is click bait sort of titles that draw a reaction out of people and cause them to click for both positive and negative reasons. Look, you're good at what you do. That is never gonna be argued. CPU's right now are shifting to a different design perspective for the current generational usage scenarios. They are going into a mode of lowering power usage, and yes that includes Intel. New regulations are gonna hit the market come 2026 and ALL manufacturers from NVidia, AMD and Intel are scrambling right now to lower power usage profiles. Combine that with CPU manufacturers locking the chips down so that Mobo Companies can't Force Degrade the chips with infinite power usage. Right now, AMD is in the best spot to stick to the regs and Intel has almost given up on trying to comply. One more thing to note though. 90% of the systems out there are GPU Limited. The cost of GPU's has stifled the need for higher performance CPU's unless you want 6 million frames per second at 1080p.
