Take something like nail polish and make a line across the crack and see if that cracks after a ride.
@Team81MTB4 ай бұрын
That's a great idea. If it's cracked, it'll definitely show up on the nail polish. I'm betting that it's just a paint crack. Dude seemed like a decent sized guy. If it was cracked, it would have broken by now.

Had a rear swing arm brake on a Jamis Parker many years ago. Went to the shop 5-10 minutes later had a free replacement on the way. The shop was pretty cool and so was Jamis. Same with my kuat nv bike rack that broke a shop fed them a line and I had a free replacement part.
@acebikemedia Жыл бұрын
I should have tried to pass it under warranty to be honest. I saw they had a crash replacement which is what I believe this falls under, just wasn't super amazed with the replacement price. I'll take care of it one way or another though

Sorry about your 951. Man, the sales I have seen recently on bikes are amazing. I picked this bike up last week for $1925 CAD (yes CAD) which is equivalent to $1420 USD from a store up here In Canada that was selling them on clearance as they have decided to drop Intense and go with Cannondale instead. So looking forward to riding it. I think there is a glut of inventory in the market right now.

I am sorry about the bike😢. Keep us updated!! I have a 951 too so I am interested how they handle your situation.
@acebikemedia Жыл бұрын
Intense advised me not to ride it because they can't tell if it's a crack, but said it appears to be. Their crash replacement gives me 40% off a replacement rear/right side triangle. Total came to $500. I'm going to skip it and just do a local carbon repair guy who comes highly recommend. He would be cheaper and easier to work with. Nothing against intense, but it already seems like trek and Yt were easier.

100% . I had to check to make sure you weren't BS'ing me. $1800 is insane for that bike! Only suggestion is if your in between sizes, go up.

That's such a bummer. I can feel the secondhand disappointment through the screen. 6 months later, has there been a resolution? This is honestly the kind of thing that still makes me feel unsure about buying a carbon bike. Recent sales across the board have been tempting me, but I'm terrified of the possibility of being out of a triangle or entire frame because of a rock. You mentioned your Stumpy has been a good beater bike; is it carbon or aluminum?
@acebikemedia10 ай бұрын
My stumpy is aluminum. It takes all the abuse so well. I love carbon frames. They ride so nice and they are so light but when this stuff happens it is a bummer. for an xc bike the intense can handle some serious abuse. I'd say it's still 100% worth it. Intense did offer a new triangle at a discount but was like $400. I'm going to repair it myself. I know it sounds like a bad idea but I've still been riding it and the crack hasn't changed one bit.
@icantgivecredit87110 ай бұрын
@@acebikemediaGlad to hear the crack hasn't grown. I was under the impression carbon bikes handled well and could take plenty of abuse given they're stiffer than aluminum frames, but was unsure when it came to crashes (which yours barely was). It's the "what if..." that makes me hesitant. I suppose one way to shop for a carbon bike is by warranty; supposedly, this bike is under warranty if sold by Costco. I saw after the fact that this bike was actually discounted to just below $2k from Costco, and I might've jumped on it at that price. I'm ashamed to say I've paid more to build up a hardtail.

Thanks. Really appreciate it. Because it was my fault the frame was damaged, intense offered me 40% a replacement rear triangle which still was $400. I decided to just repair it myself, which I haven't done yet. I still rode it several times and the crack hasn't changed.
@dl686010 ай бұрын
Cool, $400 for a rear triangle doesn't sound bad or good... if you can confidently repair it do so, but don't take chances- we need you in one piece :) @@acebikemedia
@benjaminren3779 Жыл бұрын
Carbon fiber takes the majority of the load through tension. Since the lower triangle in theory should be in tension most of the time, a crack in the carbon/epoxy matrix shouldn't affect the bike too much, assuming the fibers themselves are still intact. I won't be too worry about it if it was my own bike, but I'm no expert on this particular bike and I could be wrong here, so take it with a pinch of salt :P
@acebikemedia Жыл бұрын
Thanks man. Could explain why the crack isn't getting bigger. I've ridden it quite a few times. Probably will finish out the year on it and then find a repair solution. Might try some diy stuff.
@matthewhardisty23818 ай бұрын
that is part of having carbon frame mountain bike. depend on how you ride, it will have impact on how long frame will last. I have fatbike carbon frame bike for over ten years because I do repairs on week spot before chance to break. most carbon frame bikes have weak areas you need to pay attention to after each ride and if you don't it will break
@georgekrpan318110 ай бұрын
I think there is a trend of going back to aluminum because carbon is more expensive to begin with and more expensive to repair.
@acebikemedia10 ай бұрын
I think it could be going that way too. I actually changed my Enduro rig over to an aluminum stumpy Evo. Yes it's heavier but it's so burly and handles everything. I had a very close call in Missouri and I'm fairly certain I would have destroyed a carbon frame.
@georgekrpan318110 ай бұрын
@@acebikemedia In road bikes some say high end aluminum is better than entry level carbon. I got a Trek Emonda alu. It's the same weight as the entry level carbon version. MTBs don't depend on the frame material for ride quality like road bikes do.

Yea aluminum would have held up to a rock strike for sure. The problem aluminum bikes have is weld failures and I have had those before. I love the way carbon bikes ride. It is noticeable in my opinion but there are obvious downsides to it.
