Well the point of this 12GB variant is to lock in new MSRP pricing and discontinue the 10GB model. Now people cannot complain that a 3080 12GB was once $700 starting out. It’s like house builders who now tack on a bunch of upgrades so they can justify increasing the overall build by $80k-$100k to reflect market pricing.

believe it or not its not nearly as affordable as the 10 series cards. they bumped the price up across all cards by a few hundred during the 20 series compared to the 10 series. 80 TI class cards used to be sub 1000. i consider the 3090 to be what the 3080 ti should have been. ti cards used to be 20% - 30% better than non ti cards but now you are lucky if they are even close to 10% better at hundreds more. 1080 ti was 700 msrp at 30% more performance over the 1080 compared to the 3090 that is $1500 usd and just a wimpy 8% - 14% better then the 3080. the price to performance seems to be getting less and less as you go up with every generation. soon you will see NVidia marketing the 4080 as being more powerful than the 3090 witch is hardly an achievement given how little the 3090 performed over the 3080 and they will probably ask $900 to $1000 msrp for the 4080 and give the excuse that it beats the more expensive 3090 for less

It's using up slightly nerfed GPU dies, or dies that didn't make the grade for a 3080Ti. If it gets more cards into the market well then I am all for it. Neither of the GPU makers have covered themselves in glory over the last 18 months tbh. If you don't want it, simple don't buy it, there'll be 100 other folk queuing up behind you.
@ArchusKanzaki
@ArchusKanzaki 2 жыл бұрын
@@clansome no, it won’t give you more cards on the market. At least not better than current situation. Why? It is because any die that do not make it into 3080 Ti can be made into 3080 instead. And do you see more original 3080 10GB right now? The entire reason why Nvidia made this card, is because they put the MSRP of the original 10GB card way too low so this is basically price reset for them. Mark my word that you will see way less of 3080 10GB and more of 3080 12GB even if it exist. You do not need to say the last line. Of course it will sell, and Nvidia knows it. That’s why they make sure to tack-in extra 200$-300$ for them in MSRP so even if the market goes to “normal” it will never be back when the original 30-series launch. And since they do not have “Founder’s Edition”, Nvidia make sure to screw its partner too so they can deflect blame to partners if price is too high. You can argue that corporation need to maximize profit, and even if its true, there are good ways, and scummy ways to do it. This one is arguably very scummy

Super happy because in 3D, they really are knocking it out of the park but.. then we suddenly had cards like the 3060 shipping with 2GB more VRAM than the flagship card of the current generation. In terms of a working standpoint, those 2GB really help you to sometimes step up your calculation power quite a bit in some cases especially for texture caching and very dense scenes. The problem is that there is simply not enough chips for the supply of graphics cards to increase in any significant manner. A new factory takes years to build and most of them are like half way built. Before then, if demand remains the same, THE PRICES WILL REMAIN 2X+ MRSP for 30's cards regardless of what anyone tries to do. This is a simple economic problem, the demand greatly exceeds the supply which is very slow to respond. Therefore prices must increase for maximum economic efficiency. This issue would probably end by early 2024, since new factories for chips would have been built by then and supply would drastically increase.

More importantly, I've had 4 Gigabyte cards over the last 7 years and 3 of the 4 have been replaced under warranty, so I'll never buy Gigabyte cards again.

They need to stop f**king around, REDUCE the line up, and start getting products in gamers hands. Their greed-fuelled market is about to collapse and I hope that the harm done to their reputation is irreperable. @@fromthesidelines1453 I'm honestly skeptical about the 4000 series having better availability. Why should Nvidia ramp up production when the mining hype can suddenly die? It seems too risky and they're already making more money than ever before. The most interesting theory is that the used market will be flooded with 3000 series mining cards when it's no longer profitable. That's what happened after China banned mining. If you're smart and careful about it you might get a spectacular deal on a 3080. That's another reason why Nvidia should be careful. People might not buy 4000 series cards when older models are way cheaper.

It uses the exact same Micron GDDR6X memory modules... also there are no 4GB GDDR6X memory modules, there aren't even 2GB modules as of now, only 1GB. Infact that is the reason of the increadibly stupid Vram segmentation on 3080/3080Ti/3090. Every chip has a 32bit-bus, so for the 3080 you have 10X1GB chips=320bit-bus, for the 3080Ti/3090 12GB 12X1GB=384bit-bus, for the 3090 they used a clamshell design with one 1GB chip on each side while using the same 384bit-bus (wich is also the reason of the 110°C glowing hot memory on the 3090). That's because memory-bus has a bigger impact on performance than core-count, so it was the only way to make the 3090 5-10% faster... while consuming 500W... The only reason for the 3080 12GB to exist is to reset MSRP to 1600$ (or even higer since it has no MSRP to begin with), so Nvidia can scalp the cards itself.
@cppctek

@@lupintheiii3055 well if they ditched the 1gb modules then of course they’d have to do a 3080 refresh then like they did. @@lupintheiii3055 that’s a conspiracy but I can tell you the aib partners have higher cost for many reasons but nvidia has lower cost to manufacture but they still have crap profit margins lately. Ask a share holder. They make more money on the server side and all the technology in other areas even automotive is picking up. But here’s the thing. If your into cars go look at car prices. They are double what they were for used cars. My car is worth 2x what it was 2 years ago. There’s hundreds of thousands of fords and chevys end teslas over a year old with no miles that can’t be sold or delivered because they are missing components they can’t get. Also the other HUGE factor is look up the average price to ship a container of goods from China to USA. It went from 3k to 25k per container. The chip makers have been hit on all sides. Gpu companies are not exempt from being affected by inflation and shipping cost. Nvidia didn’t start this they just got more affected by it and also nvidia doesn’t sell consumer gpus to miners so you really can’t say the mining affected them that much when they sell a bunch of ch mining only cards that are not made from consumer grade gpu dies. Fake news and rumors would lead the newbie to think they are selling founders cards out the back door lol. Go look at miners who have mining rigs and rooms full and most of them have evga, asus, gigabyte, msi And so on.
