I knew Johnny Counterfit. I played guitar in the house band at John A’s in Nashville and Johnny would come in to eat and sit in with us. This was around 2006-2010. He was a great entertainer and although his Cash was spot on, he could impersonate almost 200 other artists. His Archie and Edith was always funny. He did “Streets of Bakersfield” and impersonated both Dwight Yoakum and Buck Owens. He did a parody of “I Walk the Line” as Richard Nixon. In person, he was a humble man who was loved by everyone who knew him. He is missed.

I was a big Johnny Cash fan. I went to many of his concerts which included The Carter family, June Carter Cash, Carl Perkins, and The Statler Brothers. I heard about Johnny Counterfit on the radio performing in Wisconsin Dells. He did two shows that evening. The first was a private show and the second was for the public. As I was in line waiting until the opened the doors for the second show I heard him doing Johnny Cash. It was hard to believe that it wasn't Johnny Cash himself. He put on such a great show that I recommended him for our county fair and they booked him. I was fortunate enough that he came and shook my hand when he found out I was responsible for the show. He not only did Johnny Cash outstanding, but so many others. He was a fantastic entertainer.

Joaquin was cast for his look and he held his own for the purposes of the movie. Did he sound like Johnny? Not so much. I also have no clue why John Jr. doesn't know what his dad sounded like, because that guy wasn't it. The other two were decent impersonators as far as that goes. Johnny's voice was unique and cannot be imitated. When he walked out and said, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" the entire world around me went away and I lived in his music. I was fortunate enough to have him come to my city many times and I never missed a show. I listen to lots of KZbin singers doing their own music and only twice have I commented "You've got a Johnny Cash vibe going on". Not meaning that they were impersonating him, but that they had that soul to their voice. Both of them said that was the biggest compliment they could get. Ya, it is. Once in Las Vegas, Elvis did an impromptu impression of Johnny Cash. It wasn’t the greatest, but it was better than one might expect. He started out with “Folsom Prison Blues,” and sang a bit of that. Then he did part of “I Walk the Line.” He did noticeably better on the latter. You can find the audio on KZbin, although most of the videos cut it a bit short.

Additionally, Matt Ross portrayed Johnny Cash in the television movie "Ring of Fire," which centers on the life of June Carter Cash and was released in 2013. Both performed songs in their respective roles. There's also Alamo Jones, who, while not an impersonator, has a voice that closely resembles Johnny Cash's.
