NOT JUST A NAME - The memorial in the marshes at Mersea Island

At the end of the Strood Causeway to Mersea Island Essex, a memorial has been installed in the marshes. It is a tribute to the fallen soldiers and seamen from Mersea island who lost their lives in WW1, coinciding with the centenary of the end of that war in November 1918.

Hauntingly sad. One of the most memorable local memorials I have seen anywhere.

This style of memorial reminds me of the photos of water filled shell craters from the 1917 battle of Passchendaele. It is very powerful imagery.

Thank you for your comments ,these figures will be taken down November 2019 and auctioned with all money raised being returned to the local Trusts and Charities that helped fund this project.
