The Hunt was buried due its stupid promotion. the trailer made it look like some kind of Wrong Turn ripoff ffs. or the masterpiece "Riders of Justice", a very touching movie about chaos and design, overcoming frief and the importance of family, with tons of action and yes humor. but the trialer makes it look like its mostly a comedy.

Sometimes movies have different names in other countries, usually based on what tests well in a focus group.
@grisflyt3 ай бұрын
@@mikedabserrlday Sometimes for no apparent reason. Cannibal Holocaust was a big midnight theater hit in New York. Cannibal Ferox came the following year, clearly intending to ride on the success of the former. It was renamed Make Them Die Slowly in the US. Perhaps the US distributor figured people were just fed up with cannibals by that time. They were. Holocaust was the end of the cannibal trend. It was called Woman from Deep River in Australia. I agree with you, except for the focus group thing. That's a US thing. Nowadays titles are virtually never changed, unless children's movies (dubbed), because the internet. Back then, distributors threw whatever title they wanted on films. There seem to have been more thought behind big budget productions. Because mass appeal. So while no focus group, it may be discussed internally. I don't think there was much consideration for B movies. Sometimes given a direct translation. Sometimes a direct translation doesn't work. Other times they slap on a title that sounds like a famous movie. Say The Eliminator. Basically anything goes.
@NathanPanke3 ай бұрын
I also saw it under the title “I come in peace”
@00Resev3 ай бұрын
@@mikedabserrlday Its not really a matter of focus group testing, but local nomenclature. If a movie name doesn't translate well in another language, it will be changed. An example i like to use is "Die Hard". There is no direct translation into any language, as even in English it doesn't make sense, so the localization took liberties. In Spain its known as "Jungla de Cristal" or "Glass Jungle". It makes no sense, but its how its known to this day. But in my country (Portugal) it was a bit more amusing. It was called "Assalto ao Arranha-Céus" or "Assault on the Skyscraper", A bit convoluted, but it pretty much described the movie to a "T". Can you guess what the second movie was called? Yep, that's right, "Assault on the Airport". 😀 From the third movie onward, it was deemed that the audience would understand the intent on the series, so from then on, it was called "Die Hard", plus the secondary description.

Strange days is a masterclass Cyberpunk drama that was killed by the setting choice. Being near the end of the millennium, it was forced into an era too close to us where is shouldn't belong. Had it been pushed in a more distant Cyberpunk dystopia, like the game CP2077 like Johnny Mnemonic, It would have made fir a fantastic thriller noir. Strange Days is a masterpiece, and watching it during the george floyd protests hit like a fucking freight train.
@happyninja423 ай бұрын
Yeah Strange Days is one of those sleeper films that really doesn't get the credit it deserves. Nevermind it being a solidly written script, with a tight plot, and excellent story, all of the actors fucking sell their roles all the way. And, on a personal level, my lifelong love affair with Angela Bassett was begun with this film. Spoilers below I loved how they introduced the "playback" technology, showed it for what it could be, both good and bad, and used it as a terrifying plot device for a murder mystery. The 2 scenes specific to the playback device that stand out to me, are first, the clip he gives his paralyzed friend, of running on the beach. For one thing, it helped to established that Lenny is a good guy, despite being a drug dealer, but also it pointed out that not everything about the technology is seedy and decadent. It could be used for a lot of good things as well. But the other scene that always gets me is the scene where the one girl is killed, while being jacked into her killer's own feed of his crime. Just the level of disturbing perverseness of it, was impressive to me. I also loved near the end, when Mace and Lenny are talking, and you see Mace being just so MAD at Lenny for why he's destroying himself trying to protect Faith, but then Lenny explains WHY he's doing it, and you see that his reason, is the exact same reason that Mace keeps trying to protect him. That he KNOWS Faith is bad for him, and that he should let her go, that it's not his responsibility about the life she's in now, but he made a promise to protect her, and that was all he had left. And you see Mace's face, shifting from one of restrained anger, to quiet, sad realization, that it's the same thing she's doing for him. So she shifts from constantly trying to stop him, and be a hindrance to his plans, and becomes his ally, because she knows "He's not going to stop trying to protect her, and I'm not going to stop trying to protect him, so I might as well get on board with this job and HELP him, as that's the best chance of him getting out of this alive. Which is all I'm worried about"

The most underrated 90s Sci-Fi movie is 'The Blood of Heroes'. It's like a combination of Mad Max and Rocky. It's amazing. The movie stars Rutger Hauer, Delroy Lindo, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Joan Chen. They crew are a kind of athlete. They travel from village to village competing in a deadly sport, that is a mix of gladiatorial combat and rugby. Eventually the team becomes good enough to challenge the 'professional' team of the Red City. I know it sounds weird, which is probably why no one knows about it, but I'm telling you it's great. I love "Screamers". It's a compact but interesting story, with tension and intrigue, without being overloaded with characters and words. Never understood the criticism of this movie. The weakest thing about it is the visual effects. If someone updated and improved the visual effects in this movie, it would look great. "Screamers" and "The Blood of Heroes" ("The Salute of the Jugger") - these two films once upon a time immediately fell into my heart, and I regularly review them. They don't have epic scope, time travels, glamorous futurism, bright colors, models and bodybuilders - all that stuff, because it looks very distant and artificial. But in these films everything is more real, something you can believe in. Dust, sand, sweat, unshaven faces of tired but brave people, and there is some simple, old, real romance in this, like in children's games on the street, where there is also dust, sand, and you are dirty and sweaty, but you imagine yourself as the hero of some story in the style of old-school science fiction.

Freaked is absolutely hilarious. There is a scene where all the characters ( including Wrench, yes, a wrench !!!) remember when the evil circus owner mutated them in his vat of green mutation goo to create exhibits for his freak show. The half man/ half woman are a brother and sister fused into one being by the mutation goo, leading to all sorts of awkwardness when either half gets horny. The Frogman used to be a scuba diver. The Cowboy is a a cow in a cowboy costume, the Gas Man has a permanent lit fart coming out of his arse, and it is revealed the Wrench, before being dunked in the goo, used to be a screwdriver !!! In another scene, when the cast are disguised as milk men, even the Wrench is dressed in a tiny milk man costume !!!

So happy to see Nemesis get some love. I’ve loved that movie since I was a kid. It’s not just the action. There is a really unique atmosphere and interesting world building. Also, great score. Could have done without the janky stop-motion at the end though, but besides that, such a cool movie.

Until The End of The World is my all time favorite movie. The Criterion Collection released the 5 hour cut and it completely transformed it for me, for the better. Beautiful movie.

Dark Angel was called I Come in Peace when I saw it. The first Screamers movie was one of my favorite movies back then. It's one of ten movies I've seen based on stories by Philip K. Dick. I liked The Soldier, 1982 better than Soldier, 1998. They have nothing in common other than the names being almost the same. It's not a great movie but when Ken Wahl is being chased down a ski slope, does a helicopter spin in the air and blasts the other guy with a submachine gun, how can you NOT like it? A day or two ago I was thinking about the opening scene of the movie, and didn't realize until now that this was the movie it was in.

I was so happy when I clicked this and saw Split Second. Such an awesome cyberpunk movie. This is one of those films where it's not perfect and has some clear issues with it, but it's such a great concept that it almost doesn't matter.

That thumbnail immediately conjured up memories of the final-fight dialogue between the main protagonist and his arch-nemesis. Man, the 80's and 90's had some of the cheesiest, but most memorable one liners!

Fatboy Slim sampled the line 'Right here, right now' from from Strange Days for his 1999 track 'Right here, right now'. It was spoken by Angela Bassett in the movie.

The movie you labeled as "Dark Angel" is also known as "I Come in Peace" and I personally think it holds the record for the most amount of PropMaster mistakes in a single scene. In the bar, the scene near the pool table, pay attention to the amount of times the sidearm in Dolph Lundgren's hand changes to a completely different pistol in different camera angles.

Abel Ferrara's "Body Snatchers" is SO good. It's my favourite of the 3 film adaptations. It's way more brutal. Meg Tilly's "where you gonna go?" monologue is *chef's kiss* perfect.
@AlgernonBrosplitz2 ай бұрын
I came here to say that although I consider Ferrara a brilliant filmmaker the Donald Sutherland Snatchers can't be topped. I love me some brutality but the paranoia in the Sutherland version is unmatched

The 90s truly were the golden age of cool B-movie action Sci-Fi movies that were sometimes weird but always interesting and often just unexpectedly good. Netflix has a chance to recreate that age, if they just stop making the dumbest least creative movies ever over and over again. Some of these are absolute CLASSICS. Screamers and Soldier especially!

I saw Dark Angel but it was called "I Come In Peace." That title makes a lot more sense than "Dark Angel." A really good sci-fi action movie with great chemistry between Dolph and Brian Benben. I don't know why its called "B". Everything about it was A-grade. The cinematography, the special effects, the script was a real action movie with a strong sci-fi element. I thought the reason the alien was here and what he wanted was both scary and eeriely plausible. Even Dolph Lundgren's acting was some of his best. Brian Benben was perfect as the rule-following, ass-kissing FBI agent assigned to Dolph, I-forget-why-does-it-matter? The resolution of his character arch was satisfying. An enjoyable movie that I may watch again, after writing the comment!
