Matt Henry is just perfect in this song, his voice and whole performance is heartbreaking yet comforting at the same time. When I saw the musical for the first time I sobbed uncontrolably the whole way through this scene and I always come back to it.

I think something I just really love about this Charlie is that Killian Donnelly just looks so much more... working man than most. Like if you look up Charlie actor they're almost all 'Ken doll" or "pretty boy" hansome (which is not a bad thing just a thing I've noticed) while Killian kinda more embodies what you well stereotype as "worked in a factory and trying to get out of that life" like he's clean cut but he's got facial hair, and his clothes are nice but he's built like he could hold his own at a pub (drinking or fighting) I just really apprciated that.
@ellie19812 жыл бұрын
He really only wore a beard here because he was returning to the role just for this filming, but was playing Jean Valjean in Les Mis full time at this point. He was clean shaven when he usually played Charlie.

What a poignantly incredible performance! One can sense the pain, the desperation, the joy, the hope, all just underneath the surface of his singing. Wow!

I love watching this performance, they really look like they are having a conversation, not singing songs... Matt's expressions and body language make this spectacular and their voices at the end harmonize perfectly.

Vacationed in London a few years ago, and a guy I met there took me to see this show in West End district. I burst into tears in the middle of this number, sobbing uncontrollably. Poor fella...all he could do was lean over to me and ask, 'are you okay'? Yes dear, I was just fine...he had no idea that moment, that evening was the highlight of my whole trip.

When I was just a kid Everything I did, was to be like him Under my skin My father always thought If I was strong and fought Not like some albatross, id begin To fit in Look at me powerless and holding my breath Trying hard to repress what scared him to death It was never easy to be his type of man To breathe freely was not in his plan And the best part of me Is what he wouldn't see I'm not my father's son I'm not the image of what he dreamed of With the strength of sparta and the patience of job Still couldn't be the one To echo what he'd done And mirror what was not in me So I jumped in my dreams and found an escape Maybe I went to extremes of leather and lace But the world seems brighter 6 inches off the ground And the air seemed lighter I was profound and I felt so proud Just to live out loud I'm not my father's son I'm not the image of what he dreamed of With the strength of sparta and the patience of job Still couldn't be the one To echo what he'd done And mirror what was not In me The endless story of expectations wiring inside my mind Wore me down I came to a realization and i found a way to turn it around To see That I could just be me I'm not my father's son I'm not the image of what he dreamed of With the strength of sparta and the patience of job Still couldn't be the one To echo what he'd done And mirror what was not in me

I've been moved by a musical number plenty of times, but i'm not sure any has been so quietly devastating as this one. I watched this with a trans friend not long before I realised I was trans too. It was eye opening for both of us. I think my old man would be chill about it. At least never knowing for sure, I never have to worry about him proving me wrong.
