Well what can I say about this brew day! Overshooting temps and undershooting OG! However very much enjoyed using the Brewzilla Gen4. Guess these things happen when you are an amateur homebrewer!

Temperature overshoot is caused by the residual heat of the heating element continuing to heat the mash after it is shut down once the target temperature is reached. The temperature overshoot can be addressed by: 1. Run the recirculating constantly while heating up. The heating element only heats the wort that is under the malt pipe, and recirculating helps distribute the heat through the mash. 2. Use the PID feature. The PID will regulate the power to the heating element to provide a “soft landing” at the target temperature. There are several videos showing how to set this up. 3. Use the RAPT thermometer to drive the heating. This will cause the PID algorithm to take account of both the temperature of the wort under the malt pipe and the temperature of the mash when deciding how much power to use. 4. Use the heat shield. This attaches to the pump protection screen and improves the efficiency of the heating. WRT efficiency, I noticed that you sparged with cold water. The purpose of sparging is to rinse the sugars remaining in the grain. Hot water will work much better than cold water, but beware that too hot water will also extract tannins from the grain, so 75C or 168F water should be used.

Thanks for info mate! Think I have rectified the issues mentioned since this video! It was my first time using an all grain system ☺️ Appreciate you taking the time to write the comment and tune in to the video 👌

The low efficiency probably isn't Brewfather miscalculating. The main issues could be grain crush or mash temperature. The crush looked fine, and tbh most homebrew stores rarely undercrush also you would notice a lot of whole barley kernels with that low of efficiency. Without recirculation you could have killed off a bunch of enzymes for conversion when you were transitioning heat changes... constant recirculation is pretty important when heating the mash. Good stuff! I'll keep watching ;)

Thanks mate! Did another brew the other day with recirculation and got much better efficiency ☺️ certainly learnt from my mistakes on this brew! Thanks for watching ☺️

I had the same problem with the BZ g 4 and the weizen beer. The batch had the same size, for 10 liters. The problem is, wheat has no hull. The mash closes the pipe. The pump and the heating elements get too less fluid and sometimes have no fluid or too less fluid. The hole water could be collected in the tube and there is air under the tube, the pump draws air. During the boiling the false bottom lifts up and all solitd parts on it clog the pumps. In a few days i will try a bigger weizen batch, 20 liter. If it not work well i will add some rise hull into the mash. Then we will see.

Nice to see you upgraded, we all learn from mistakes god knows I've made a few. I wonder if the false bottom was lifting cos it was such a small batch, you could try weighing it down with something. Hope you figure it all out soon.

Thanks mate! I've done some reading and watched some videos. Feel like the next brew will be a lot smoother haha!

The overshooting is probably because you turned off the recirculation during heating: you heated a very small amount of wort at the bottom (up to cooking) and w/o the pump it takes some time for the heat to reach the temperature probe. Therefore the temperature seems to raise even after the element is turned off.

You are correct! Have recirculated on my brew days since then and have had no issues ☺️ thanks for watching! Appreciate it!

I've got the same machine but I'm three or four brews in and I'm really enjoying it now! You figured out that the heating elements were on too high already, but I also wonder why you turned the pump off whilst heating through the mash? I keep it recirculating so that it isn't just the wort at the bottom of the kettle getting heated. I typically have PID on for the mash (and hysterisis set to zero), and PID turned off for boil and hysterisis at 1 or 2. I also find I'm getting better efficiency if I stir fairly regularly forthe first 10 or 15 mins of the mash and then let it settle out. Looking forward to your next video!

Thanks for the advice mate! I'll set the PID up for my next brew ☺️ I'll keep the pump running next time ☺️Have watched a few videos since and that was definitely a mistake. Can't wait to do my next brew with it.

@@TankardBrewing Good stuff! I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the spotless water. I actually just did my last batch using 60% spotless and 40% tap water. It's still in the fermenter, but Brewfather let's you set up a water dilution like that and it seemed to get me pretty close to the numbers I was looking for without having to add too much other than a bit of epsom salts. No idea if it's a good approach or not though 😄 Keep making the vids, it's the start of a great channel I reckon 👍

good video.. I have one of these on the way... quick question, why didnt you use hot water for sparge?

Have no way of heating it really mate. Have a other brew kettle which I could do but it's a bit of a pain. I have done hot & cold water sparges in the past and really don't think it makes any difference. Thanks for watching ☺️
