Based on secret records of White House-Kremlin contacts, Not One Inch shows how, in the 1990s, the United States overcame Russian resistance to expand NATO, ultimately bringing the alliance to a billion people. But it also reveals how Washington’s hardball tactics, combined with Moscow’s self-inflicted wounds, undermined a potentially lasting partnership during the decade culminating in Vladimir Putin’s rise to power. On the 30th anniversary of Soviet collapse, Sarotte shows how NATO expansion transformed the era between the Cold War and COVID.
M.E. Sarotte is the Kravis Professor at Johns Hopkins University, a researcher at Harvard’s Center for European Studies, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She earned her AB at Harvard and her PhD in History at Yale. Her books include The Collapse: The Accidental Opening of the Berlin Wall, listed as a Best Book of 2014 by The Economist and the Financial Times, and 1989: The Struggle to Create Post-Cold War Europe, a Financial Times Best Book of 2009.
The Washington History Seminar is co-chaired by Eric Arnesen (George Washington University and the National History Center) and Christian Ostermann (Woodrow Wilson Center) and is organized jointly by the National History Center of the American Historical Association and the Woodrow Wilson Center's History and Public Policy Program. It meets weekly during the academic year. The seminar thanks its anonymous individual donors and institutional partners (the George Washington University History Department and the Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest) for their continued support.

First of all big thanks to everyone participating in the video! It is full of so many incredibly rich and detailed informations that I am supposed to watch it all over again 😅 It’s just like I can’t find the book about the collapse of the Soviet Union Mrs. Sarotte refers to at around 1:13:45 h. I would be very thankful if anyone could help me out.

Shows the wages of western/american aggression and hegemony. Not to argue pro-Putin's aggression - but let's be honest how we got to this stage after the ill-advised NATO expansion 25 years ago.

So you think all countries were forced/black-mailed into asking to become a NATO-member? Or might it be they actually prefer to be part of an international defensive/protective organisation, instead of being a sitting duck for Russian oligarchs and their criminal regime, who have no respect for modern ideas, like democracy with opposition, freedom of speech, trias politica, equality and human rights, etc?

@@Wuppie62 Over the last 12 months the Russians arrested 400 people for what they typed in social media / the web. Over the same period of time, the UK arrested 3300 people for what they typed in social media / the web. Considering the significant difference in population, this comparison shows an even greater difference, indicating Russia has way more freedom of speech than the UK.

@@Wuppie62 It's a well recognised stat from the UK used by people campaigning against police arresting & fining people for offending woke sensabilities. Like that bloke arrested & eventually fined 800 pounds in court for teaching his dog to do a Nazi salute in reaction to someone saying Seig Heil. It was a joke, but because some woke person's sensabilities were hurt he got arrested for it by the police. The police in the UK have arrested a lot of people for simply 'misgendering' on the web.

@@mickvonbornemann3824 You mean 'well known' by right-wing nationalistic extremists, who label everyone who don't agree with their ideas as 'woke'.. You're comparing apples with oranges. Anyhow, the important point is, Russia is _not_ a modern, tolerant, progressive, democratic, liberal, universal human rights acknowledging nation. Putin has his kgb..I mean FSB friends assassin his critical political opponents and journalists, domestic and abroad. Are you really that ignorant, or just pretending it while hoping other people fall for your blind propaganda? Forget it.
