Even though your channel doesn’t have millions of views, I really hope you keep making those videos. Your creative decisions really stand out among standard “how to make your kick sound big” kind of videos. For those of us who are fond of vintage sound, your channel contains invaluable information about old school mixing. In my area, I can’t think of anyone who can teach this stuff as good as you. Currently working on my surf rock album, you’ve been a huge inspiration. Best of luck with your music endeavours, mate.

This comment means the world to me honestly! Thanks so much. I always strive for the analogue thing or at least the mentality... that as you say almost everyone else is caught up with digital modern production and music loosing any human element

Without Your creative way i'd stew everytime thinking i have only four tracks to record. Even though i use eight, i'm very happy to know it's not a must:)

Good one Andy. Great song from that EP which I just listened to in bandcamp to compare to the new mix and it is a nice improvement! The pultec was a great addition to rise trk4 and sit nicely against the center channel mono verb (plus was a great idea routing via Marantz). Thanks for the posting and, as always, I learnt something!

As always thanks Peter! There's so many ways you can do things and maybe I went about town with the reverb trick when there was a simpler way. On the Marantz that would have been simple with the effects send and return on each track.. But then the Marantz doesn't have a buss so I wouldn't have been able to compress both vocals at once with one compressor. Plus the m30 mixer sounds lovely!

Another way you could have gotten at the vocals to add compression and verb would be to use mono splitter cables out of the marantz into 2 tracks on the mixer and then you can treat each split differently. The splitter cable is good for when you have a "shared" track (eg back up vox and lead instrument in middle 8, so you can each instrument queued up with totally different settings and toggle between the 2 at mixdown). Anyway there are so many techniques to do "more with less" and it is so much fun!

@@peterkiefel4324 that's a good idea! I've never thought of using actual cable to split the signals. It's funny... Bare in mind I made this video very quickly and my on the fly "how am I going to do this?" sometimes isn't the best way as I realised just I could have sent all 4 tracks to a mono bus as I would have had one spare.. and just done an insert reverb on the bus without using the Marantz mixer. I just wanted the verb on a channel so I could eq it as the pultec was in use. Also I wouldn't have had the luxury of the custom submix levels. As we say there's so many ways to achieve effects with routing options!

Love the videos. Quick question, can one hook the mixer up to the 4 track and set your sounds and levels before recording without blowing the 4 track up 😆 cause I know you can't hook guitar or bass heads to it direct .. does the same rules apply to the mixer ? Thanks..

Hey Chris, yeah sure you can just have to get your gain staging right!

I started out on that Marantz back in the 90s. What do use for noise reduction as tracks are being flown around. Your results are surprisingly quiet for cassette.

It's just the Marantz NR it's a quiet machine compared to some
