@H M that’s not a good thing to live by for everything. Every situation is different. A good friend doing something selfish vs a parent calling you useless is different. Yes how you react is ok you but how things make you feel is how they make you feel.

Oh man, the lady interrupting the business dinner gave me so much secondhand anxiety and embarrassment! The moment she said he was at the same place and didn't acknowledge her, I just kept thinking, "Ignore him. Ignore him. Talk to him at home. Ignore him." When she said she went over to the table, I cried out in horror. When she INSISTED and pulled him away for up to 10 minutes, I died and was sent to the great beyond.

Right there with you. I was shook. It was cringey and no need for it. I felt it was a weird control issue then she turned around and got mad at her hubby for verbally reaching his frustration point. Her back pedaling made it worst too. Time for a little self reflection on her part.

It is just so hard for me to believe that she didn't know he was going to be there! LIKE HOW?!?! Someone, somewhere planned this! Like its one thing to run into him if you are just like damn he is going out for dinner and so will I, but with a "last minute change." Also I wouldn't even feel comfortable speaking to someone if I knew they were in a business meeting and I saw them. Its screams "I'm your wife and I come first with everything!"

My dad died at 32 and my mom at 42. I turn 26 in a few days and I’m thankful for the lines I’m starting to get on my forehead. I’m hopeful for the day I can see gray hair and wrinkles in the mirror, because I’m scared I won’t get there. Aging is a blessing, being alive is a gift.

My personal philosophy with compliments is “see something, say something,” so whenever a compliment pops into my head, I say it. Yessss, I am a boudoir photographer and I just want to say thank you both for your awesome attitudes toward it. It's such a fun way to celebrate yourself and feel elated and brave and comfortable in your body. Also, that husband is trash for making his wife's photoshoot all about HIM. He has no obligation to feel aroused by the photos, but the fact that he just refused to look at them and called her desperate when all she wanted was for him to acknowledge the courage it probably took to STRIP DOWN IN FRONT OF A PHOTOGRAPHER. Like, that's SCARY, and I'm sure all she wanted was for him to say she looked beautiful and that he's proud of her. Like, I can't. Throw the whole man away. She deserves so much better.

My husband is completely lost in the kitchen when it comes to cooking, so that responsibility is mine alone, however it's never something expected of me. If I don't feel like cooking I don't have to, we call them fend for your self nights. When I do cook, which is most nights, my husband does the dishes. Good on OP for the cookbook on a plate. He's almost 30, she's not his mother and he is completely capable of finding his own food.

My husband cooks often because he likes the kitchen, it's mostly me doing dinner though. However literally 2 nights ago I had committed to cooking dinner but I joined the discord (he was gaming with friends) "Hey I just suddenly got really tired and lost all will to cook, would you be satisfied with Dino nuggies?" He took the dino nuggies happily and I went to lie down.

Yeah, my husband is the same. He can't cook and I'm pretty good at it. When our first baby turned out to be a super-colicky newborn, I didn't cook for three months because I was barely surviving. Not once did he criticize me for that. Now he takes her after he's home from work so that I can cook. He also works overtime each week so that I can stay home with her and her future siblings, because he's an actual traditionalist (not just a lazy POS who uses it as an excuse). The 30-year-old manchild had me shaking my head. We as a society need to set the bar for men higher, because I hear of way too many stories like that and it's almost always the guy being a manchild.

Exactly, my roommate in college cooked us dinner nearly every night. And I made sure I was in that kitchen chopping things, stirring things, whatever he needed me to do, while cleaning up the kitchen/doing the dishes as time went on so that by the time we were done the kitchen looked like it hadn’t been used and we could enjoy our food. In the early days I was worried that maybe he was overburdened and was secretly wishing I made meals too. But I’ve never been a cook, and he knew that by seeing what I fed myself lmao. So I asked him about it and he laughed and told me not to worry about it because he really appreciates me doing the dishes and one of his favorite things is cooking with friends and family, so he saw my effort as a fair trade. God I miss him 😂 my standards for roommates are so high now

I really want to say that if you are a male-presenting person, the best way to compliment a person: Only compliment things that person can control: hair, outfit, makeup, etc. Not their body, or facial features, not their "sexually attractive" features. It will help you not come off as creepy and it's good to learn to notice those things anyway. Best of luck.

I'm female, and I still keep this in mind because I don't want to compliment things that a person might have a lot of insecurities about it or compliment them if they look like they're losing weight or getting in better shape because you never know if someone has an eating disorder or is losing weight because of stress or a health issue. But with hair or outfits or makeup, etc., those are things the person chose to look a certain way and probably like.❤

The one with the mother in law snooping and finding the pregnancy test has SO many horrible things going on. Firstly, there are so many reasons why if it had been real, things were handled poorly. The pregnancy test could have belonged to a friend as was suggested, OP could have been pregnant but not been ready to tell anyone yet until she felt it was safe to assume the pregnancy would stick and not result in a miscarriage, and also false positive pregnancy tests can happen. As was said one of the worst things about this aside from the actual snooping was the fact that the mother in law thought it was okay to just go and tell everyone, including her son before even consulting OP or giving OP the chance to tell him if she had been pregnant. And then to have the audacity for people to call the OP a liar when she NEVER told anyone that she was pregnant is what really pissed me off. If the husband can't see any of the problems in this scenario and is mad at OP then I don't think this marriage will/should last. I can understand being annoyed at the specific trap that OP set if it's a touchy subject, but he's completely ignoring EVERYTHING that his mother did wrong and clearly will never put his wife's feelings/needs above his mother's.

Once you get into entitlement, it doesn’t matter if it comes from a good place. Ex: men may love s e x and express lovingly that they miss connecting with you in that way but once they get demanding or pushy. It’s no longer done in a loving way, they don’t care that you are too busy and that’s the problem. There is a two fold issue, even in the midst of your overwhelming day, they think there needs matter more than yours as well as the fact by demanding of you during that busy time they also aren’t supporting or taking anything off your plate. It’s a very selfish mindset

The first story with yall's takes hit home for me. I recently got out of a relationship where I was expected to do all of the housework myself, while my partner would come home and immediately play video games. She would say that I am not expected to do it, but if I wasn't doing it, it wouldn't get done. There were times where she would say she was going to do something, for example do the dishes, and I would give it days, once even a week or so, and they would never get done. When I confronted her about it and expressed how I felt I couldn't trust her word when she did this, she would turn it around on me and say that I was nagging her and that I wasn't working with "her timeline" and if I just wouldn't bother her she would do it. Now I know this is gaslighting and victim reversal and that I wasn't the problem, but at the time I felt like I was going insane. Nothing I would say, no amount of communication worked. It was like trying to reason with a brick wall.

For the snooping MIL that is logged into messenger on her son's old phone: change the password for the app. Under privacy settings you can choose "log out of all other devices". With the password changed, she won't be able to get back in. You don't even have to say anything because it should be common to update passwords at least every 6 months. It's kind of counterproductive how often we hear comments like "his mother is coddling him" or "you're his partner, not his mother" because we're still saying that 1) it's always the woman's fault and 2) it's always the mother's job to take care of the child (even when the child is a 30 year old man). We should be mindful of language because it shapes our reality. Whenever I say I'm going to do a chore around the house, my boyfriend has stopped saying "shall I help you?" because him "helping me" would mean that it's my job; he now says "shall I do that with you?" instead. That way it's a chore we do together and not someone's specific job since we both have jobs outside our home. Chores are something we do equally because we're both adults and it's our responsibility

Seriously, people with ADHD aren’t incompetent and we often feel guilt and regret when we forget things. I’m grateful if my partner reminds me at all! I usually use post-it’s, I’ll say something out loud a couple times in funny voices so I remember something, my phone reminders/notes, and i have a physical planner too! Even though I have ADHD I still have the responsibility to fulfill my obligations and take care of myself. I just have to use different strategies and it’s a little harder. But I refuse to believe I’m any less mentally capable, it would feel ableist almost I think? Hoping i find other ADHDers strategies here, too!

My bf is this forgetful from both ADHD and ASD but I can tell he is trying, it's like there is a wall between remembering the thing or the reminder and doing it. It's not his fault but it has reached a frustrating crescendo because he is not medicated. I talked to him about this and he has finally made an appointment to try something out. He was diagnosed at 18 and has made it this far but it's not working anymore. The forgetfulness waxes and wanes, it's clearly involuntarily. I will feel ignored but I know how to separate my feelings from the disorder as much as possible as well. Every day is a new day. I can ask him to do something immediately and it's no problem for a whole day and another day he is asking me what I even asked for. He had to go to the bank to change his password 3 times because he didn't even remember his username and he kept forgetting to write it down. I'm so excited!

@@7ShadowMaiden7 I often feel I can't say anything so he doesn't feel bad but he also needs to know he forgot. It's hard. My bf likes to say 'I forgor' and I give him a kiss, but I do hate giving reminder calls and it still isn't done. So much. Sometimes it's more effort to get him to do it than doing it myself! A lot of the time he will make sure to do something sweet to apologize, though, and I melt.

I get mad bc i rarely make him contribute to cooking, but he never does, he gets treats. I can never treat them bc he will. I've offered to teach him but hes not interested. I've also gotten into arguments w/ him about enforcing "picking up after myself" with the kids (ie if im busy, please have kids do this), after MONTHS, he finally got on board. I had to explicitly say "Do you want oir boys to learn that they dont have to pickup after themselves, mombwill do it? Even when theyre teens? When they go off to college? When they cant keep a spouse???" (He's bad at picking up after himself & relies on me to do so, i dot want my boys to do this). I AM a stay at home mom, bt hes trying to encourage me back to the workforce, but he has a fair number of sudden trips & he does NOT dust, vacuum, clean pots & pans, do laundry, cook, etc etc. He was responsible for oldest son's boy scouts but dropped that, whereas i take care of guitar, piano, swimming, soccer, Chinese, & other activities. Maybe its because it lets us judge people and kind of "gossip" without actually knowing them or actually ruining anyone's life like you would if you were to actually be gossiping about them and discussing such personal matters openly like you do on the show in real life, about actual people you know and among people that would know them too. One quote that I live by is "If you see something beautiful in someone speak it". Whenever I see something I like about someone I will compliment them on it. I get severe anxiety from talking to strangers, but that's always something that I do. Sometimes I get ignored or people don't hear but most of the time I get to see people's faces light up and it makes me so happy to be able to make someone else smile. I especially love it when people get excited and tell me about the thing I complimented them on. You never know what people are going through and if I can make just one person smile each time I go out my existence is worth it.

A note on how to apologize for your part when you feel like the other person is overreacting. This happened to me a few days ago. I overreacted to something my partner said to me, and the way he apologized was perfect: hey, it was never my intention to hurt you and I am sorry for not backing off when I saw you getting uncomfortable. However, I would like to continue this conversation, and if you could explain to me how we can do that, and which parts hurt you and why, I can either explain myself better or work on those bits together". I too had to admit my part of overacting (communicating is a two-way street people) and admitted my deep-seated fears, and then he managed to explain his part without triggering me.

I’ve been listening to your podcast forEVER and it’s genuinely helped me open my communication up, and ALSO try to be a little more devils advocate like Lauren and see things from different views, but this. This is the goldmine Without comprehension, it’s a one way conversation that will continue like a broken record

Hearing to you guys talking about how getting is such a blessing almost made me cry, my dad died this year and I'm 22, and I would give everything to see my dad grow old and go to events like my wedding or meeting my kids in the future and he will not. I love this podcast

Oh my GOFDJK "can you repeat how you interpreted what I just said to you" should be in the BIBLE. I've struggled so much with people misinterpreting what I mean to say, and I'm going to use this religiously from now on! I love this podcast and you guys so much ahhh

People say “you can’t control attraction” which I guess in general is true but not fucking really because the more in love with someone I am, the more I find them to be absolutely breath taking. So if you are going to MARRY SOMEONE then you should be prepared to love them as they grow old with you. He clearly doesn’t actually love his wife because if he did, he would still find her beautiful.

Hey girls, I just wanted to say thank you for everything you guys do. Even when y’all don’t post I still listen to the other episodes on repeat. I recently went to your live show in Los Angeles and I loved it. Even though I only got to see your head from where I was sitting but I loved it over all. Great experience to have
