19:59 “That was a bad omen!” Yep… I know you know some Japanese, so you should take note that Anya said, “nanka ochita” 何か落ちた (something fell). The “ochiru / ochita” though it means “fall / fell,” it is also used to mean “fail” for things like tests or interviews. So that photo falling was an omen to mean they may have failed the interview. Also, regarding Japanese, you can tell that Anya was really nervous in the beginning and was trying her best to speak as properly or formally as possible. Unfortunately, it made her use improper grammar. For example, when you say “daijoubu,” you’re supposed to use the “desu” verb ending, but she was using the “masu” verb ending, usually used with action verbs. So she was saying things like “daijoubumasu.” Everyone let it slide though. The next episode is awesome, btw… it’s one of the best of the first season.

I think this episode is the first time we properly see Loid's growing feelings for Anya and Yor, even if maybe unconscious at this point still, override his usual purely logic-based thinking and it's lovely to see. For one when he just couldn't hold back his emotions when Anya was treated that way by the Swan-ahole. And then when he chose not to despair at the end because the logical conclusion to him was that they failed, and rather believe in them just this once and leave things to chance. Which is not something he does lightly. All in all, another lovely episode

I love how everybody assumes Anya is kind of dumb because of how she struggles with some academic things, such as when the headmaster remarked that her writing was terrible and how she mixes things up when speaking, but they don't realize that she's actually just younger than they think and she just lied to Loid about being six because he read his mind and she knew he wouldn't adopt her if she wasn't old enough to get into the school. She's probably supposed to actually be five or even four.

This is one of those instances where one who lives by rules or by the book, has to learn to also "take a leap of faith". Its pretty deep if you think about it. "children seeing right through their parents" is also realistic so in a way, Anya 'reading their minds' isn't anything unusual because "children can sense" things about other people or adults because they're more sensitive to verbal and nonverbal language/behavior. Its amazing how well written the characters are and how good the author is at writing how children think and behave. The reason why Anya was crying was because she was hearing Loid's thoughts saying "Her parents are probably..." which trails off, which is sometimes interpreted to mean "missing" at best or "gone" , as in dead because of the strange circumstances of Anya being dropped off at a random orphanage.

Mr. Henderson is a good example of every major character in this show- he comes across as uptight and unfair at first, but time reveals him to be a caring individual who takes his work as a teacher very seriously. Nobody is what they appear to be at first.

The reason Eden is the way it is is because it's an elites school. A school for the rich and powerful families. It has 13 years of school. 8 houses. So ots the size of a small town. Forrest, farm, river, lake, the school buildings, sports fields, dorms, it's VERY LARGE. The animals fetting out was probably an animal breaking a fence. That WAS an accident. Not part of the test. The teachers judging them walking was judging appearance, clothes, and if the children cling to their parents too much as EDENis a boarding school.

Thank you for the additional info, that was very educational. The only thing I have doubts about is the boarding school matter. Yes, some of the students like Damian were shown to live in the school dorms. However, the students like Anya only attend lessons and get back home. So, it doesn't appear to be obligatory for each and every student to live in the dorm.

1:57 -- No, it's not "ganbarimasu". Anya actually says _"ganbarumasu",_ which is, of course, a grammatical error. Before that, Anya says "daijoubu-masu", which is also a grammatical error. Throughout the series, there are numerous examples of Anya mispronouncing or misusing various courteous phrases. Some typical examples: --- "arigatou gozaimasu" --> "azezemasu" --- "ohayou gozaimasu" --> "ohayaimasu" --- "yoroshiku o-negai shimasu" --> "yorosu o-negai shirimasu" Also, notice how Anya greets Yor with a wrong greeting in the introductory scene of 1x16.
