As an American, I've been to a few English seacoast towns, only in the summers, but I've never been to Margate. It was a treat seeing it through your camera lens. That stand you put your coat on is the type of thing you would have in your bedroom or dressing room or hotel room to hang up your suit overnight ( jacket on the back and trousers over the rail at the front). There would be a drawer or tray for your cuff links and pocket change, and maybe a clothes brush to remove dirt splashes once they’d dried.

Love this blog ,spent most of my childhood in whitstable, we had a holiday home.deal is special. I also recommend sandwich in kent.its very beautiful and loads of conservation areas,do beautiful properties. I would say our days are grey from November to February when the clocks change and as for seaside towns we had Covid so that affected businesses on the coast. I live near the sea and places are still booming so it depends - I do think Margate attracts an older set of people and not the younger ones? Big buildings are harder to maintain unless there is wealth as in London or larger towns.

My grand parents used to holiday in Margate. You could take a paddle steamer from London down to the Pier ...apparently. Last time I was there, it felt a little depressing. Whitstable and Faversham were better. Hythe was cute and any of the Weald towns. Dads fam are from Goudhurst. Lovely but friggin expensive!

In America that's called a "valet stand" or "valet rack" - the hanger is obviously where you put a shirt and jacket, the bar in the front is for hanging pants (or ties) and the drawers normally hold things like cufflinks or in the old days pocket watches etc. Sometimes they have a sort of dummy head coming out of the top of the hanger for hats or a mirror, or a rack on the bottom for a pair of shoes. Not sure if they were to be used by valets or by people who couldn't afford a valet... or maybe both.

The wooden hanger furniture is a gentleman's Valet. You come in from a boozy night, can't be bothered to put your clothes away, or throw them on a chair where they get creased, so jacket hung on the back, trousers folded on the bar Infront, cufflinks and watch in the draws. A bit historic, l have one written in a scene where my character hides in the Hotel Astor, Manhattan. In the 1930's they would have been De rigueur for every hotel suite.

I’ve lived in canterbury for 28 years so know this area of Kent very well and I would stay clear of Dover! It is very run down and there’s nothing to do other than the castle and cliffs. If you go to Deal then definitely go to a town called Sandwich and also do Folkestone and Hythe if you haven’t

Glad you had a lush time at Margate House - its so beautiful. I made the move from London last year and don't regret it one bit (I live in Ramsgate) - the creative community down here is amazing, and yes it gets cold and windy, but having a beach a 10min walk away is priceless. BTW you were so close to Broadstairs - its literally between Margate and Ramsgate. Deal is cute too. NEVER go to Dover - its a s@*t hole lol

If you go to Broadstairs in the summer, you should revisit Margate. Like you say, it's a much nicer town in the sun with an ice cream in your hand! It's worth mentioning that Broadstairs is between Margate and Ramsgate, and it is just a short distance from the petticoat shop in Dumpton Park. :)

Chad made me laugh "I wouldn't travel for it" - he is a snob like me. I am very fussy and although I used to like a bazaar I now go to Emmaus for second hand items and emporiums can be hit or miss. I now have all the furniture and bric a brac I need and the appeal has gone. My father loved antiques and there is a good barn nearby at reasonable prices but when the need has gone it is how it is. Auction rooms are the best fun.

Oh Margate! It's so sad to see it so far from its former glory. I just want to give the whole town a good pressure wash. I suppose the bustle of people, music events, outdoor bars and the sunshine help distract from the sad buildings in the summer, but it's so depressing in the wintertime! Try to come back for a music event. Also, try Folkestone at some point closer to the summer and give some of the Kent local summertime street festivals a try. And, I'd be a traitor if I didn't suggest my local hot spot of Rochester too.
