Producing her first film, Lupino cast Sally in the lead role of NOT WANTED (1949) and then again in YOUNG LOVERS (1950).
Director : Ida Lupino (uncredited), Elmer Clifton
Screenplay: Ida Lupino, Paul Jarrico
Stars: Sally Forrest, Keefe Brasselle, Leo Penn
Ida Lupino's directorial debut! When a young woman (Sally Forrest) gives up her out-of-wedlock baby, her guilt compels her to kidnap another child. Watch for Sean Penn's father in the role of Steve.
TRIVIA: Ida Lupino took over directing chores after Elmer Clifton suffered a heart attack just 3 days into filming.

They will never make fantastic movies like they did back in the day the movie stars today sit on their brains if it wasn't for vulgarity and nudity and violence they'd probably be working at a fast food restaurant cleaning out the toilets and flipping burgers. God bless the movie stars of yesteryear those days are gone forever. 😒

Ida Lupino was a legend . So much love for her here by those of us that know that already , but still saddens me that in most main stream she gets no mention at all.She could act any role, sing, direct, write and produce -What else does she need to have done to get some recognition? Deserves a movie or TV mini series to document her amazing achievements Meanwhile great Movie with Sally Forrest perfect in this role and the supporting cast spot on in a very well directed and written screenplay.Never too mawkish or melodramatic , instead thoughtful look at the situation as it was then.Nobody here is bad , bad things just happen.Thanks PizzaFix.

A "mothers broken heart"? Ick. Maybe if the mother hadn't been an endlessly carping, complaining guilt-tripping bitch on her daughter, Sally wouldn't have had such low self-esteem as to fall for an egotistical creep like that lecherous piano player in the first place.

For so many unwed mothers, placing them for adoption, putting the emotional and physical needs of her child(ren) ahead of her own desire is the greatest gift of love she could give them.
@LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts
@LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts 4 ай бұрын
Ouch! How does putting a child up for adoption meet their physical and emotional needs? Even just basic biological needs of an infant to stay in close skin constant with their mother isn't met. Are you confusing a social stigma that makes life hard to bring up a child on your own with a woman's inability to meet her child's needs? Or you think that the unmarried part makes a physical difference to a child's needs? What about the huge numbers of children in this era who lost fathers they never met or couldn't remember because of the war? Were they damaged by not being put up for adoption? Your comment doesn't make sense.

@Jack Cleary Yes, I first encountered it in geometry. Here I meant that the actors and their interactions were powerful because each actor/tress was congruent with the role, so it felt to me that they weren't acting, they _were_ that role. Part of that is the actress/actor, but part of it is the director who sets up their interactions. A director is a conjuror. Ida Lupino is a master.

for real. Most do, especially a girl this young. She ran from her parents to chase the man, and then was too proud to return. It is a melodrama, and she therefore makes many things hard on herself. This movie was remade in 1982. "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" the Stacey plot. For all the modern choices for that 15yr old, the institutions were much colder, darker and relatively heartless. The "Free" Clinic even charged her $150 and she was back on the street in a few minutes with no compassion.

@@annielehnhardt_kolakowski5818 It is very different today where there is help for single mothers. Back then, not only was an unwed mother dealing with the judgment of society, but the child was labeled a bastard. And the mother had to do everything on her own, because usually the family disowned her. This movie has a happy ending which is more than a lot of women had back then when the entire affair was kept secret forever and haunted them for as long as they lived. And, as you saw, closed adoption meant never knowing what exactly happened to the baby.

I'm 74; at least one of my classmates (HS class of 1964) "went away for a while," and two more married very quickly upon graduation and had babies after 6 or 7 months. Lovely and wrenching performance by Sally Forrest, who reminds of Nicole Kidman. The landlady character had to be the inspiration behind Lily Tomlin's Ernestine the Operator-dead ringer!

fabulous to the very end. what I wouldn't give to just have a conversation with her. her creativity, and relatable work were so in touch. everyones' acting was superb. the human condition superbly portrayed. she is no longer physically with us, but that indomitable spirit certainly is, with this body of work. todays filmmakers, with the exception of a handful, pale in comparison. always something to strive for

She was very fortunate to find such a compassionate home for unwed mothers. The women were so compassionate even after the adoption took place, she felt comfortable enough to go back there for emotional support and they provided it. Such a sad story.

@Marie V. We adoptees aren't shown any kindness either. If we act upset at all about not being able to know who our moms are, then we are deemed insane and forced to endure tortures like Attachment Therapy or sent to shrinks who give us bad drugs. Adoption is totally geared to the adopters because they have money and the agencies want it. Adoption is child trafficking/child abuse period. I wish it was illegal.

Wow!, Loved Ida Lupino as an actress and now too as a director! Had not seen this before, and will not be forgetting anytime soon. Impressive work, simple but complex plot. What the director pulled from the actors onto film so impressive, maybe too close to reality to become popular? Thank you so much for putting up for us all to watch.

Gosh. So simple and visceral. The character Sally was played by quite an exceptional actress. Great chase scene, with the Patriot WW 2 veteran Drew, and the bad leg. And of course it’s pity for the other that ultimately unites them. A film like this in 1944 was extremely risky, and unusual. I’m not certain but I’d wager this was a popular film that had good ticket sales. Great writing, simple, sentimental and poignant. A+ for sure!

I really admire Ida Lupino --- besides being a fine actress, what a great director she was. And Sally Forrest was a marvelous actress. I didn't know about her until this movie. Now I want to watch Young Lovers that Ms. Lupino directed and that Ms. Forrest also starred in. Greetings from Querétaro, México, where I moved to from Dallas, Texas, five months ago. After spending 67 years in Dallas, Querétaro is my new home. I am as happy here as I was in Dallas, and I love watching fine movies like this one. La vida es buena. ~ Life s good.

What a movie! Held my interest every second. I felt sorry for Sally, but thank goodness she found a man that genuinely loved her. Ida Lupina produced a masterpiece film with a superb cast. Too bad she didn't direct and produce a sequel to "NOT WANTED." Sequel Idea: Sally is happily married to Drew ten years now. They live in a comfortable middle class neighborhood and are parents to a boy and girl. Sally is able to visit the couple who adopted her firstborn child. Sally is thrilled to see the child and she must decide if it's okay to have some contact with the family from time to time or just have closure and focus on her own family.

The actor that portrayed the pianist must have practiced long and hard to synch his movements with the music. He's so much better than most movie "pianists" that just wiggle their fingers in the general direction the piano music is taking. While he did not play the actual sounds we're hearing (I'm a professional pianist, I can tell) he did do a darn good job of faking it! Now that's an actor who's willing to work for his craft.
