I have been running the new X1 23d for the last 13 months with the same gearbox. It is woeful. The stop/start is also shocking. I have tried for 13 months to get on with the car but that is the wrong gearbox for that car. I have had far too many near misses when approaching a junction the stop/start kicks in before you have actually stopped at the junction and if you see a gap to pull out of the junction and try to accelerate away the bloody thing has cut the engine and there is a slight delay in it firing back up by this time you are halfway across the junction in limbo waiting for a response from the accelerator and when it finally kicks in you have to floor it to get yourself out of a now potentially tricky situation. With this gearbox you have to change your driving style at junctions so if I remember I flick it in to sport mode on approach which stops the stop/start from kicking in. Suffice to say, the car is being sold on Monday for this very reason. I cannot live with it any longer which is a shame because the car is lovely.

My dad has an X1 18d and yes the start stop is really awful. I permanently disabled it in my 320d with Bimmercode but unfortunately Bimmercode isn't compatible to the X1.
@wezzman13 ай бұрын
The stop start cutting in before the car stops is not just BMW, we have a GLC with the exact same issue. It's scary as F when you come to a busy junction and try to merge quickly and the bloody car don't move when you expect it to😠 The EU and it's stupid emissions.l
@tommilton57533 ай бұрын
I have a 23 X1 in the US and generally it is pretty impressive, but for the transmission delay. There are two actions to ameliorate this. First, cancel the engine autostop. Unfortunately, this has to be done for each trip, but it can be made into a shortcut, so simply swipe down then select. Alternatively, drive in Sport mode, when autostop is disabled anyway. Second, do not use Autohold (or deselect it before the traffic lights turn green). With autohold the car won't begin to move until you press the throttle; without it the car begins to move when you take your foot off the brake. Together, these changes go some way to improving the take-off. Then, there's the turbo lag! No solution for that.

I had one of the first off the production line back in April. Got rid of it after 6 weeks and swapped it for an M240i. The M35i was a disappointment. Hi Joe! I've had this car for 3 months now, almost 4kkm driven, your intitial review a year ago got me really excited about it and I've got one, I've switched from an Audi Q5 because I wanted something more driver focused and I have to say that I love the car. It's my daily driver so it had to be comfortable and smooth most of the time for city traffic etc. so I really don't mind what they've done with the gearbox, in normal mode it goes from a stop really gently, passengers really appreciate it :D As for the torque steer I've almost instantly fitted it with Michelin PS4S and it pretty much solved the problem, original tires are too weak for the car. I think that for most people it will be a very enjoyable car, certainly is for me, it's miles better for a driver than any "normal" SUV like my Q5 was, where steering feel was totally non existant. Here you can really push it in corners in any speed you want and it goes like it was glued to the road. Performance is also very nice, for sure is quicker than the numbers suggest. A car like this needs to basically master two personalities, for daily use and for thrashing it on a B road and I think this one does it pretty well ;)

Dear Joe The problem with new M135 (as well as the X1 and X2 fitted with the same power train) vs my recent M135i are exactly the engine and the gearbox de tuned and the torque is reduced because of the double clutch gearbox which is not able to support more than 400 Nm (the Aisin converter gearbox was recently improved a lot and is able to manage more Nm). There have been feedback from BMW blog driver on the MIni Countryman JCW ( same car underneath). They also noticed the delay from rest which they hoped BMW would get rid off. However they did not find any issue with the upshift/ downshifts in driving that I recall (also tested by another Utuber). Just wondering if your gearbox has some issue which would account for the torque steer with seemingly no power to the rear axle or incorrect proportions. To me the X1 is really nice but expensive and I like the Mini's quirky looks and its £10,000 cheaper and a maximum 48K with the level 3 pack thats 13k cheaper than the XI in the test. How 4.8 to sixty is really quick and you are, not to rude, heavier that the 75 kg they allow for a driver, due to fact you are very tall.

I remember thinking exactly the same when I took delivery of an M235i Gran Coupe. Similar recipe. looks great but just doesn’t drive like a BMW. They’re MINI’s dressed up in posh frocks. I suppose this platform sharing is the only way to make these smaller models in the range profitable though. I wonder if the fully electric version is a better drive than the transverse engine layout. 🤔

This is my daily. But maybe I’m just used to the transmission. Yes the start stop is bad but I hate stop start in all cars. the mild hybrids do it better. My transmission isn’t as bad as yours I enjoy mine. I believe you got a bad car with issues. But honestly since owned the car it’s pretty fun. I believe it you pit it against its direct competitors like Tiguan R it is in some ways more bang for the buck. I could be wrong.

Nice car, but for similar money, you'd be better off with an M340i or M340d touring, which are just as practical, look better, probably drive better, and have the 3.0lt B58.

Is the 7speed dct better or worse than the 8 speed aisin in your opinion, as i am on the verge of purchasing a m235i gc. Have you driven that car? If so, what is your view on it?

@JoeAchilles1 Good review, Joe I have a 2024 X2 M35i with almost all the packs on ... I got a very good deal on mine, ex Director’s car. £60k is too much I agree but just second hand is far better. Few comments on the car, naturally similar to the X1 you had - I had 3 years in a 2021 fully loaded M340i Xdrive which was a great car. The ZF 8 speed gearbox in this is much smoother around town than the 7 speed DCT in the X2, but in Sport (Sport) the changes are like you observed v snappy on the upshifts, and in my car are equally as quick on the downshifts. I don't experience any of the delay you experienced for some reason - yes there is some torque steer under full acceleration (and I have 21" alloys on mine!) but it's not obtrusive. What exaggerates the issue is the lane departure pull which has to be reset every time the engine is switched on (could be permanently switched off in the M340i) which is a pain but not unique compared to other new cars or just this model. Annoying yes but without it on the car is significantly better. I have fed this back to BMW - I drive 600 miles round trip every other weekend, mixture of roads but mainly motorway, and I'm averaging 45mpg (although I used to regularly get 43mpg in the M340i) - iDrive 9 is fantastic as you note, and completely negates the need for the idrive controller. I do not miss it whatsoever after having 5 BMWs with it Overall it is a fair review. I've had the car 2 months now and really enjoying, I try not to compare to the M340i with the glorious B58 but it is a really solid daily, with character and more than quick enough with the B48 engine which like you say feels much punchier than 300bhp and 400nm of torque! Cheers PW

I own the car as well and my downshifts are pretty quick. Upshifts are slower. I think he got a reviewer unit that is probably preproduction or it just has issues. The quick drives won’t give the full experience. I test drove before I bought it and when I did I was blew away with how it reminds me of a bmw m sport dune buggy

I also believe the only point for the dual clutch is for off the line acceleration because it feels like the gears are just meant to get the car moving as fast as possible. And it may be a cheaper option for bmw. I like my x1 m35i. After a few years I’m going to trade it for a bmw x3 m50 that hasn’t came out yet.

@@Mglobal.enterpriseyeah agree 👍🏻 I almost got a LCI 2023 X3M, whilst it is a great car I think the idrive 7 feels rather outdated now against 8, 8.5 and 9 in our cars ... very functional still mind. I also halved my insurance in the process, not to be sniffed at! The new X3 M50 looks like a cracking car too ... one to look fwd to! One more comment is acoustic glass is a must, my car is so quiet inside! Enjoy your motor 👍🏻

Hello what's your thoughts on the m135i f40 aisin gearbox ? I have a 2020 and find the gearbox shift very aggressive and jerky around town... you know if its the delay in shifting gears the problem and need a remap to improve shift speeds?

Pretty silly comment. BMW made the X1 with a RWD layout and available with an I6. It did not sell as much as the second generation (maybe due to the polarizing looks of the OG had) so I am not sure the people buying these care!

@@AgonxOCNot the point. The reason why BMW is such a prestigious company now, and they’re considered “good to drive” is because they have stood by their morals and USP for the last 50 years. Why would anyone choose this over a Tiguan…

Cars in 2024 - less car for more £££. I thought new technologies are meant to make things better for the same or less money. If we only improve by constantly raising the price of things then it means progress stagnates. Look at smartphones - every generation now brings only marginal improvements but the price goes up ~10%.

M35 is an Infiniti, so although it’s an older car Nissan might own it and have a word, if the i vanishes from this. If the controller wheel goes, it’s just a touch screen, not iDrive. DEALBREAKER! Twin clutches are just to compromised unless it’s a sports car. What they’re worst at, is what this car should be doing best. Torque steering? Ah yes it’s not x-drive! It’s a bloody Mini under there right? I don’t mind the look of it though 🙄

I presume the ZF 8 speed masterpiece would elevate the price point? Seems mad BMW know just how good this gearbox is and choose not to fit it in a driver’s car (same issue with M135)?

it s not an option since the X1 is on the Mini platform and engines are mounted sideways which cannot accomodate the ZF. Not to mentione that DSG boxes will eventually need clutch replacements which is several thousands euros. Not the same story for torque converter boxes like the ZF. Honestly I think the Ainsin 8 would have been a better option
