I was anchored right off the entrance to the marina by the aircraft carrier and watched this exact Neel dock/leave the dock multiple times. Every time was a struggle. I don't think it's a problem with the neel. It's a problem with the currents/winds and REALLY tight docking they have in that marina. But EVERYONE struggled with it.

One way to gauge great online content are your videos. My wife and I don’t sail or have any connection to that life. But we watch these videos start to finish every time. Now, if I had one the megapowerballthingy we’d be out there chasing you guys :) We love the videos. Especially when you toss in some underwater content. Be advised, you don’t need to be wealthy to go sailing! You do have to be willing to take a bit of risk on a filthy boat and know what to look for to avoid a money pit. The most obvious way to get a good boat cheap is to look in the marinas at the end of the season in norther states where the owner is about to get a bill to haul out an older boat they just paid dockage on all year, and didn’t get on the water. Look for dirty boats. Dirty means lack of use, not necessarily a lack of maintenance. You MUST keep a realistic budget for fixing things, but that doesn’t mean you have to go to West Marine and swipe your credit card. Every boating town has a salvage parts chandlery, and a block is just a block. It doesn’t have to be new, it doesn’t have to be shiny, it doesn’t have to have the latest and greatest stuff for sailing to be fun. I got my boat for literally $502.50 and paid the marina an extra $125 to store it for a month until I could get it home. I don’t store it at a marina ($500 for the winter) I store it in my backyard for free. Before I started fixing things, I scrubbed it down with soap and water, and found a decent boat under the grime. I didn’t buy new lines, I washed them with a little borax and dish soap. My point is, you can absolutely do it, it really does work.

Another great video! I skippered a 42ft Norman Cross trimaran early eighties for a couple of years. I’ve sailed a lot and the trimaran is the most comfortable and reassuring in a blow. She was ketch rigged and preferred full working sail up to the top of force seven. If I reefed too early the ride became uncomfortable as she no longer “flew” over the waves.She sailed herself on all points except downwind with the wheel lashed. No auto pilot. A hint for your mainsail. The boom looked to be set too low on the topping lift so you had greater than 90 degrees at the gooseneck. I always lift my boom to an acute angle before hoisting so that the halyard doesn’t have to lift the boom as well, and also keeps pressure off the leach. . I also ease the mainsheet a lot to ease the loads on the halyard. Once you’ve completed the hoist you can ease the topping lift. Now you can make final adjustments to the hoist/ outhaul etc before bearing away and sheeting in. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work.i love you guys.

It's always hard to evaluate or give an impression of a boat you've never been on before when you're dealing with broken rigging, unfamiliar rigging and noises, and all the other stresses that come sailing. To be fair, regardless of hull type, beating is never pleasant, so it's a real shame that's what you were greeted with for the first half of your sail. I think it would have been a completely different experience had the wind models been accurate and you had a beam reach the whole way. While cats are jerkier than monos in rough waters, the tri seemed maybe a little MORE jerky, kind of bashing back and forth in short intervals, and porpoising in between. Didn't look pleasant, to say the least. Then again, the sea looked like an angry washing machine. Hope you get a better sail later and are able to see what that tri can really do. Welcome to Florida! St. Augustine had the Mat out, oh NO it said Rain! Yikes, you guys had some quick learning to do! That is a real test to make do with equipment, when all is not working as it should! Yikes, it is not your vessel and you have to protect it, at all costs! Make a good Log of all that you went through; it still looked like a lot of Fun! It is a great testimony of Sailing being akin to Flying. Definition of Flying: "Hours of Boredom, and Moments of Stark Terror"! I sailed in weather like that on a large lake in Colorado! A storm was building over the mountain behind us, and we had No Wind! Then the Front came and we sailed Five terrifying Miles, tacking around a point and bailing for all I was worth, plus handling the Jib Sail! With a three year old child, a Beagle dog, and two people in a Marconi Sailboat! TERRIFYING! Good Job, guys! Coffee tasted especially good watching this Video!

Well done you did it! Some observations that you may or may not know: The power of the sail has 3 sources: Angle of attack to wind direction, Depth and Twist. When you have a short chop (distance between waves), you need to use the sails to drive the boat through the waves when on the wind. At the start of the video, your headsail was twisted and not fully sheeted. Get the boat powered up by sheeting both sails in tighter. (A trimaran will heal more than your cat). It will be more comfortable with less pitch and roll, and you will point higher into the wind. At the 22 minute mark, I noticed that in hardly any wind in the morning, your main had very little shape or belly. Your headsail had a lot more and looked about correct. The theory is your draft should be up to about 13% of the sail foot length for very light wind. The aerofoil produces more power, but the yacht will point into the wind less. The bottom third of the sail is controlled by the outhaul at the clew of the mainsail on the boom. So for a 20 metre foot, the draft could be up to 2.6m! As the wind increases, it can come down to 9 percent. (1.8m) In extreme conditions it could be down to only 5% (1m). Use less twist as the wind speed increases, (leach has less curve). Another tip, use the sails to balance the helm, take weight off the rudder. If you are having to use a lot of rudder to stop the yacht rounding up, tighten the headsail and let out the traveller so it de-powers the main until the rudder is nearer the centreline. Please I understand you are sailing a strange boat! But the above applies to all sailboats. Interesting video tks. Regards Murray.

I enjoy the series and your 'honest' approach to being somewhat 'new' at sailing. True, it is rare to see anyone 'new' making major blue water passages as you have. 35 years ago I was helping deliver a friend’s friend’s boat from Melbourne, FL to Mississippi. It was a 56-foot ketch-rigged trimaran - 28-foot beam! On a very pretty day with 15-knot wind we lost the mainmast (bent double). We were able to limp in to Lake Worth Inlet, where we left the boat and drove back to Louisiana. Great memories!

In order to get an realistic exposure to the Neel boats, one should watch a video of one being sailed by someone who has already become familiar and facile with them. I suggest the series of videos by Igor stropnik. He recently sailed a Neel 51 across open ocean for 100s of miles and provides a much more accurate picture of their boats.

Good advice. I like James from Cary on Sailing channel who also owns a Neel 51 and lives on it. A wealth of information on the Neel 51 as well as general sailing advice in his channel. That said, the Neel 51 is a very different yacht from the 47. Very different. Most commenters here are getting an inaccurate perception of Neel yachts and trimarans in general from just one video. It's reminiscent of the Ruby Rose 'expose' of the shoddy Neel 47 they visited that was hastily assembled for a boat show. Shafted again, sigh.

The sound of the coffee grinding fading into the back with the end was a nice touch :P So, seeing more about the Neel I'm starting to learn more about this boat, some things seem pretty nifty about it but the claim to fame with Tri's, so far as I've read about them, is their motion underway and performance vs a cat (Tri or Cat > Mono ya? lol) Seems like she wanted to hobby horse over the crests and fall side to side a lot but beating into sharp quick waves like that is always rough all around. Need to do a side by side with a cat and tri to get a real sense of it. Seems like most of the things we could pick apart with it are just owner config things but the outboard winch situation is way too exposed for my taste, that and a raised helm that's not *really* well enclosed are kinda my biggest concerns with any blue water boat.

It's Sunday morning with “Gone with Wynns!” Yes, it’s a weekly favorite and a glorious way to start a week. I would believe with three hulls, you would provide a sturdier ride across the waves. But, I guess mother nature and the ocean dictates your ride.

Yes and no. It is a more stable platform than a mono, but not as stable as a cat. A tri is changing from sailing on one hull to two hulls, and it could be two different hulls at times. A good way to look at a tri is to think of it as a mono on training wheels where it can be on the center wheel(s) or on one or the other of the training wheels as well. Although in the case of a tri, it will be more alternating between which one of the two outer hulls, with at times being only on the main center hull.

What I really love is when you show the sky! Same constellations year after year. You can also see the sun and moon in the same sky and near each other too, which says so much! On B&G you can set it to use SOG as speed. This act makes far more sense for calculating apparent wind as it is you velocity through the air that is really needed for calculating apparent wind speed. I’ve never understood why most systems use speed through the water!

Reminds me of a lot of the power boats of the 70’s. Tri-Hulls are wonderful on calm water and can be fast. They will beat the hell of you in any chop. That’s why a lot of the bass boats went back to single hull. I warned folks including La Vagabond.

It's winter here. The boats have been wrapped since mid October. Your videos keep us anticipating spring and a new season. What an action packed trip!!! Love your HH jacket. We hit a large squall just coming out of no wake zone 2 years ago. We should have stayed where we were 10 minutes before, but it kicked straight into us. As a non sailor, it’s always interesting to me when you talk about all the things you do while sailing as “fun”. I mainly see it as a boat load of work (I guess that’s where the expression came from). It got me wondering if you ever trailered? My sticks and bricks friends think that what I do is a lot of work as well, but that’s part of my fun. Anyway, beautiful video and I’m glad you’re safe, once again. That squall was intense. I guess that as with RVs, every boat is full of quirks and busted, or near-busted, things the owners are familiar with and work around every day without even thinking about it. Kinda makes the boat delivery thing more of an adventure than one might otherwise expect, which is a great lesson in itself. So, how does one normally do a basic checkout before heading out to sea on a delivery?

You are in the flow of the ICW (intercoastal waterway), almost at the mouth of the inlet, where the ocean comes into the bay and the Matanzas River. The tides and current have to be crazy there. They love to buzz boats when offshore fishing in the Gulf Stream 60 or so miles off of Charleston, Beaufort, Savannah, etc! You got your sea legs and quirk reduction out of the way fast. I don't know about you, but i got the impression that not only does a Tri handle differently and sound differently but I'm so sure I'd like it as opposed to a plane old Cat, especially with only one engine. I always love the bottlenoses playing at the bow. It was a relief to get to J'ville and outlast the squall with no anchor dragging. Always a new and interesting adventure even when cold and wet. so next week down the inland waterway or what? Un abbraccio forte a due!

P.S. did 5 years in the Philippines but on an indigenous fishing boat. Local and I rigged it with sails. I did this to blend in and avoid pirates. The guy that helped with the paint asked. The Neel boat is ultralight at 10.6 tons compared to catamaran charter boats almost double the weight. I would recommend examining the polar plots with standard sails or asymmetrical plots. You will see that the Neel sails at a much closer upwind angle of 30deg TWA than a catamaran at 60deg TWA. Charter catamarans are heavyweight, slow, and low wind angles. So of course, cats feel dramatically different from a performance trimaran. The Neel trimaran is almost impossible to sink or flip with so many water-tight compartments with a centered CG. Catamaran weight is in the rear of the hulls with the equipment and is easier to flip, destroy rigging, and sink. Lighter displacement means better fuel economy and longer distances.

We live aboard a 53ft Norman Cross Trimaran and you are right they are totally different to Cats and Monos as they fell more like they dance is the only way I can describe it. If you had better weather it would have seen more of it's beauty. I hope one day you'll try a Tri again 😁🏴‍☠️

All I can write is that sailing the Atlantic in winter off Virginia and the Carolinas is not the most fun thing to do. But one should always anticipate an adventure.

What is particularly special about the Neel 45? It's an older outdated model. The main difference is the dual bridge deck cabin layout compared to single on the Neel 47. In that point of the company's history the construction quality and finish weren't as good as they have been since the production move to France. It is a quick boat, though, if performance is important. You could do a refit of one if acquired on the cheap and make it a worthwhile project.

Traditional "welcome to Florida" squall!!! The JAX NAVAIDS have been like that for years, was stationed at NAVSTA Mayport and transited that channel many many times. Confusing if you aren't familiar!!
