Thank you for this great video, Lorella. Your rabbit videos have a been a great help since I have just gotten into meat rabbit breeding. I did not know how to go about sexing them, so thank you for showing me! I have some little ones that I'll need to separate like this soon.

Ideally I would have done it at 8-10 weeks, but it was Christmas and I had covid, so everything got thrown off timing wise. I’m sure you’ll do fine, it takes some practice but then it gets easier!

@@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm Glad you are doing better, and thank you for the vote of confidence. Yes. I wasn't too good on the timing when butchering my last litter, and one was already pregnant. I should have heeded the advice in this video!

Hello Lorella..I'm a goat and chicken farmer since 96 . But I've never raised meat rabbits but have been tossing the idea around this yr. We are in our 50s now so my days of cattle or hogs for meat I'm not to game to do. Though growing up we dairy farmed butchering beef. Anyways I'm looking into learning about rabbits. My biggest thing is butchering them. I can butcher chicken or cattle no problem but goats I cant and wonder if I could rabbits. Emotionally that is. Lol..thanks for your teaching God bless. Any advice welcomed

Hi! The main thing for us is to raise our grow-outs for butcher as livestock. I feed, water, and visually inspect daily, but I dont handle them like I do my breeders, or ones that I’m going to sell as pets. Earlier this year we had to keep a couple in the garage while we were using tractors for chicks, and we ended up selling those, they got a little too familiar to butcher. 😂 Also, it’s quicker and easier to butcher rabbits than chickens. Chris does most of the butchering, but I help out from time to time, and I do ok with the rabbits. They’re not as smelly as say deer, so that helps, too. Let me know if I can help in any way, or if you have any more questions! -L

I heard somewhere that rabbits are carriers of bed bugs. Is this accurate?
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm3 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that rabbits are not more prone to bed bugs than any other pet. And that the bugs actually prefer humans because they don’t have to find their way through fur. It’s not that they can’t get bed bugs, it’s just not likely.

I don't see how you can just look at those things and kill them like that🎉 I mean there's such cool animals. I think that's terrible
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarmАй бұрын
If you eat meat, it comes from somewhere. Our animals are raised in conditions that keep them happy and healthy. They only have one bad day. I’d rather eat meat that I know comes from animals that are well cared for than from a feed lot.
@persephonevesАй бұрын
I agree they are cool animals and I personally could not kill them except in the case of shtf and I needed them for survival. They are so great at making soil rich and their urine is a natural insecticide. My bun has done wonders for my previously dead yard.

I been told you can tell the sex by the rabbit’s demeanor. Males are more outgoing and less timid then females. Mine are still young but I would be surprised if it wasn’t true
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm9 ай бұрын
I’ve raised a lot of rabbits, and demeanor has never worked for me. 🤷🏼♀️ Just be ready for babies if you plan to keep multiple rabbits together. :)
@jasonp3649 ай бұрын
@@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm I was afraid you would say that lol. What would you recommend as a feeding method for a colony? It’s hard to do daily feeding as far as hay/pellets/vegetables goes especially with a large number. It feels like managing rabbits are the same as chickens or are they sensitive to their diet?
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm9 ай бұрын
I’ve never raised in a colony, I use these tractors. My rabbits get moved to fresh grass every day, and when I have multiple rabbits in one tractor they have free access to rabbit feed with about 5% rolled oats and 5% black oil sunflower seeds mixed in, in a chicken feeder. If I have a rabbit by itself they get 1/2 cup of the feed mix per day, and a pregnant doe gets 1 cup a day. I also give them veggie scraps (raw, not cooked) and fresh veg from the garden, but if you do this start small, like 5% of their diet or less until they get used to veggies. (Imagine eating only bread and cereal then all of a sudden having big salads every day. It could really mess with your gut!)
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm9 ай бұрын
Oh! And in the winter I give them tons of hay because the lack of garden produce. As far as not feeding them daily, you could go with a big chicken water and feeder if the weather is nice, but I like to visually inspect all of my animals daily even if their food is full.
@jasonp3649 ай бұрын
@@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm I feed mine equal amounts of hay, pellets and fresh produce and let them decide what amounts they eat of which when the weather is still cool so they can stay warm. As far as a waterer goes. What do you use to handle the freezing? I’ve seen heated bowls, heating pads for buckets. I was thinking of a submersible aquarium heater inside a 5 gallon bucket with brass nipples?

I see you guys do it and I can tell what’s boys and girls on the picture but when I go to do it on these little tiny bunnies 8 to 9 weeks so it’s not as easy as what you’re doing. I ant figure it out yet
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm7 ай бұрын
It is much harder when they are small. You may not be applying enough pressure around that area to push it up enough where you can see it. I mean, be gentle, but you do kind of have to push the skin back pretty far and it really just takes a lot of practice. Hang in there. You’ll get it.

@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm Жыл бұрын
Yeah. You would have to work at taming your rabbit first. I would start with getting down eye level with it, the hand feeding, then petting, then work towards holding, then gender check.

Why raise rabbits on the ground?
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm Жыл бұрын
It’s easier on their paws than cage wire and I can move the tractors around my fruit trees so the manure is naturally fertilizing the orchard, and they can graze on fresh green grass in addition to the pellets and veg I feed them. They have more space to move and jump and play than in a cage.
