I'm a former Electrical Engineer, now totally burnt out on computers. I have fun talking to my family on GMRS when we're RVing but I did get a Technician license in preparation for SHTF. Josh is an excellent ambassador for the HAM radio hobby but that doesn't change the fact that most HAMs (at least in my area) are retired old men who want to chat about their plumbing problems, their grand kids, and their medical problems.

Gmrs repeater people. Around here are. The creepy sounding old dude. That dudes friend. The two younger sounding first responders talking about ems and emt and volley FF stuff. Then there's the guy that sounds like a kid
@Sagart999
@Sagart999 Ай бұрын
I admit to being a retired old man, but I never waste bandwidth talking about family or family issues. But then, the only reason I got into amateur radio is for SHTF situations. I maintain my skill level by participating in local net check-ins, and leave it at that. I have more to do with my time that be on the air.
@dianetaylor6751
@dianetaylor6751 Ай бұрын
I refuse to join the local HAM clubs. I just can not stomach the thought of all those retired old men wanting to play hero. It's hard enough going to Menards or Lowes without my hubby in tow and walking into the hardware or lumber section (yes I am buying for me there also). They about break their dang leg getting to me to stick their nose in why I... a mere female... am buying boards and screws. They get one polite warning to back off and if they do not get the clue then they get the full force of my tongue.

I have 25 years of experience writing software for Windows. Windows sucks. But Apple thinks you're an idiot. If the computer fails to do something, it tells you that it's your fault. It's not that this driver we loaded failed, it's that you don't know how to use your computer. And it works. Apple gaslights its own users into accepting shitty compatibility, a tiny aftermarket and exorbitant prices for everything with their logo on it.

I don't need a free radio, but I do need the two of you to sit down and talk about the best all-access jail breakable base station, vehicle, handy, and repeater to buy for a person who doesn't care to learn or dork out in this space and doesn't care about the FCC or any of their so-called rules. Yes, I'm lazy and don't want to work for it, so just spoon-feed me what I need, or better yet, come up with a package and make a kickback off it (give me a low, medium, and high-end cost range). That way, the next time there is a national emergency, I can argue with a sad ham about how I don't have a call sign as I lay there dying.

Ham in Canada is a bit different. The entry test is 100 questions and to need 70 correct. This gets you a basic and use of radio over 30mhz. If you score over 80 you get full band use with power limited to 750watts. The next level is advanced another 50 questions and you need 35 correct to pass. This gives full privilege. Our license does not expire and does not need renewal. Your callsign is issued to you for 150 years (to make sure you die before they reclaim your call). There is no minimum age. Good show 73

My opinion is that the average ham radio operator likes when every repeater silent (in case of emergency), they rarely rag chew, maybe because ham operators seem kind of awkward at conversation with people… I got my Gmrs license, then tech, then general…hoping I’d find people chatting, but I didn’t lol. I rarely use the 70cm/2M ham repeaters in my area, because it always feels like a forced, short conversation…and they love to give you unsolicited life advice😂. The Mexican GMRS guys south of the border are great, they’re always up for a conversation & I listen to them talk while I work…great use of the radio, IMO.

Randy, regarding giving radios away, the idea of "how the recipient would use them" is a good metric. e.g., for me, I lead OHV groups (like you lead Jeep groups) in the AZ Sonoran Desert area near Phoenix. From your review, I purchased a 2 pack of Boufwang GMRS 9R dust/waterproof radios, love them; but if I'm leading 5 vehicles I don't have enough to give to everyone (just me as leader and the tail, which might change). Having a few lockable-keyboard FRS radios would be an useful add to make sure everyone can call out an emergency. BTW, I love your notarubicon radio videos, hilarious! I watch every one even if I'm not interested in the product.

I live in the Hurricane disaster area in western NC. Our cell phone service is horrible. Are there programs to help those of to purchase the Star link who are living in the disaster zone??? I am also a new Ham operator and during Hurricane Helene ( the very next morning we had no power, no cell service so I turned on my cheep Baofeng and I could hear the Ham operators helping people nonstop but I was so discouraged because they couldn’t hear me. I live in the mountains and I’m sure all of trees played a part in the service. Do you have any recommendations for getting a better radio that can reach the repeaters near me. Medium price because my husband has been out of work ever since the hurricane. He had shoulder surgery 2 days before the hurricane. He has to have the other shoulder operated on as soon as his left shoulder heals. Not sure how long he will be out of work and I’m a disabled veteran so we are living on my disability check right now. Recommendations please 🙏

I have a question, and I don't know where else to send it to you. I just bought a NEW(?) Revetis RA-87 GMRS radio. I say it that way because I have other GRMS radios which actually work. THIS radio has a problem. I can transmit to other radios and they hear me just fine. I cannot hear them. I suspect there have been some programming put into this radio by someone (possibly a returned radio sold as "new"?). I e-mailed the seller and he told me how to remove the codes, and if I did it right, I still cannot hear other radios. I am not a programmer type of guy and a new radio should work right out of the box... right? Have you heard of this problem before? I will have to take this to my friend and have his grandkids work on this thing for me. One other thing: The book that came with this radio referred me to page 29 to remove the coding... The book has only 24 pages.

The “KZbinr receiving a radio that’s been churched up” I’m sure is a thing… I’m in the Midwest, and I remember like 15 or so years ago a “showroom stock” Toyota Tundra appearing at a lot of the local truck/tractor pulls and entering the Stock Gas Truck class. Street tires, dealer sticker in the window, absolutely factory stock (appearing). And it would march right down the track making a pretty impressive pull. But, I’d bet a paycheck that THAT particular truck was definitely NOT stock in the tuning, gearing, etc: all the things you can’t see 👀

It's really up to us hams to pull in the other services during emergencies. We usually have the equipment to pull in weak signal from a FRS/MURS/Marine or CB and then act on that information. Josh is right: No first responders are listening for these transmissions. The only problem is a lot of ham radios can't talk on these frequencies unless they are unlockable, so it might take a couple of extra radios. The RT-95 will do all but CB, so at least one unlocked VHF/UHF mobile/base and a CB/10/11/12m radio will do it.

I found I often drove my GMC yukon to town to get parts for the other vehicles. I know the newer GM V8 engine is have problems now, but my V8 will likely outlast the rusty body. I had a 1980s dodge I wish I had kept and a 1973 ford I wish I kept, the 1976 Chevy I really miss because it had so much more power than any thing else but they all got rusty and worn out. Jeep seems to have to many chrysler problems like MAP sensors and weird little issues.

I'm interested in the gmrs I'd be interested in a good radio to hit a repeater about 17miles away. I've been saving up and got a Yagi and some 213 coax. Look forward to joining the nggmrs group soon. I enjoy your straight forward video sir thanks

Great show, I enjoy listening to both of you, although i do think that the push back against licences is a bit silly. Like it or not they're not going away and the best way of getting used to your radio is to use them, especially if you want to use it in emergency situations you should have practice doing this which you can get great practice at through POTA and SOTA, to do these you of course need a licence. Getting a licence is also a good way of learning about radio as you will learn as you study for the tests and then going forwards as you use them. I do appreciate notaribicons kind of libertarian stance on this but realistically any government needs to control radio as it is a finite resource

Non profit organizations can benefit from getting a radio… but there might be some people that might take advantage of a donation by using that excuse. This is a difficult one Randy. A raffle? Maybe.

Thanks - I have actually donated multiple radios to a non-profit that helps homeless people on the streets in Atlantic City but i think they have all the radios they need.

@@TheNotaRubicon nice! It is extremely difficult to get the radio to someone that really needs it. Other than seeing the need live. I hope you find the right way. The idea you have is heading the right direction.

Any network dependent in ANY way to an operational power grid is a bad option. For instance, satcoms which require power 24/7 for the authentication units.
