I also have my own “secret Like counter” I’ll be happy to reveal. (These Likes were directly inspired by NotaRubicon’s entertaining video, so they count as additional Likes)… • I liked this video = 1 Like. • I liked NotaRubicon’s (the “Pinner’s”) response to Micheal’s (the “Pinnee’s”) comment = 1 Like. • I like seeing people using technology to actively enjoy life = 1 Like. • I like when people use their experience to teach, inspire and enrich, and not tear down, belittle and harass others = 1 Like. • I like happy hams = 1 Like. • I like green eggs and ham = 1 childhood Like. • I like when people are respectful to each other = 1 Like. This unfortunately meant disliking Micheal’s comment = -1 Like (oh snap). • I like long walks on short beaches = 1 Like. • I like short dogs with long tails = 1 Like, long dogs with shorts tails = 1 Like, and cats who identify as dogs = 1 Like. • My dog identifies as a bird = 1 Like. I could do this all day = 10,000+ Likes. So this video actually has over 11,750 Likes as of now that disagree with “the Pinnee”.

I actually met a sad ham at my General exam. After I passed the test, they offered and I took the extra exam. I failed the second test pretty nicely. Sad ham chastised me for not studying for the extra exam. He said he’s been a ham for over 60 years. I offered him my name and address for addition to his will so he can leave me his radio gear. For some reason he was NOT amused. Everyone else (not sad hams) were very amused.

My Sad Ham story: While out hiking I had my radio tuned to a nearby repeater. I listen to about 20 minutes of dead air so I keyed up with my call sign and that I was monitoring. What I got back was a rant about how they were in the middle of an emergency drill and I was ruining everything. I responded with an apology, and closing out properly with my call sign and received another diatribe in response. So I deleted that repeater entry from my radio and moved on. 😆

Great video. I got a uv-5r a couple of years ago, then a Gmrs license, then a Tech license. Primarily interested in emergency communication. I figured that the ham license would open up a wider range of communication in the event of a wildfire here in the Colorado mountains. Plus there are no GMRS repeaters near me. Most hams are nice folks. Some, however, are authoritarian personality types…aka, Sad Hams. There’s also a bit of competition among them regarding technical knowledge. Some clearly either were or wanted to be President of the Science Club in High School. That’s okay. Not my thing. GMRS is great for most average humans most of the time.

I didn't let these types keep me from experiencing ham radio and it was brutal in the 90s in my local community, but I also met some of nicest people. It was cb or ham then and coming from cb I can say that, even coming from 'sad hams' (we knew them as radio police), I did probably learn a thing or two that helped me to become a 'better operator'. I also learned that I didn't need to be accepted by a clique to enjoy amateur radio. Don't be thin skinned and don't allow anyone to steal your sunshine if you have an interest in ham radio. You don't need anyone's approval.

I am a ham operator in Australia and I've got to say I both laughed and cried watching this. "Sad hams" are indeed a phenomenon but fortunately, from my experience at least, they are in the minority. Honestly, most hams that I know don't have much time for these types at all. If you're interested in radio as a hobby, don't let people like that put you off. Yes, there is required learning for using amateur appliances and I dare say in the context of this video, with good reason. Licensing is a multi tiered, you don't need to be a "brainiac" to get involved. I certainly wasn't one and found some of the learning a real challenge but it's also one of the reasons I wanted to engage in the hobby. The entry level license is no struggle at all. Class licensed radio and ham radio both have their place. Both have pros and cons that the other doesn't. It's horses for courses. Pick the type that is right for your needs at the time. You can always move sideways at a later date. Regardless of yours or others choices, please, live and let live.

There is a certain "personality type" I see in amateur radio that I also see in fly fishing. Now, I enjoy both both hobbies, but this "exclusively special" attitude that some particular personalities bring to both is a bit off-putting. In amateur radio, there's the person who says "We do Field Day in a public park to be ambassadors for the hobby" out of one side of their mouth. If they can be bothered to answer public questions at all, the other side of their mouth is very condescending on makes it sound like amateur radio is uber-difficult to participate in; that you have to have the brain of Marconi and Ohm to even think about testing for a license. It's radio. It's not brain surgery or rocket science. The material covered in a Technician-Class amateur license is not beyond the capacity of the average person to understand, and making it out like it is seems little more to me than an expression of narcissism to me. They're like the people who make casting a fly rod out to be some kind exclusive art form that the average person can't ever master well enough to have fun and catch some fish, when the absolute truth is that anybody who has ever flicked excess paint off a brush or driven a nail into a wall to hang a picture already knows how to cast a fly rod. They just don't know they know. The long winded point is that both of these hobbies I enjoy have their more than fair share of grumpy old men who act as participation barriers rather than inclusion-minded ambassadors. And frankly, I think that's stupid. Fly fishing is a licensed privilege just as much as amateur radio is. More public involvement in a pursuit of privilege means more allies to stand up to those who might want to see such privileges revoked, for whatever reason. But some don't see the thing that way. The Sad Hams and the Sad Fly Fishers have a lot in common, in that they give the appearance that the main attraction to their hobby is, for them, the sense of superiority over other people that participation gives them.

So, I myself am a ham operator. I recently got my general license. But I started in the wild west of radio; CB. My dad had one, and a while ago I got one in my truck. I'm looking into CB and learning I came across GMRS. I said hey lemme get that too. And went on further to get my ham license. I feel like regardless of what radio you use, what band you're on, if you're not causing problems, it's really whatever. Sure, I understand getting licensed and only using certain bands with a plan. But honestly if it's not causing interference or unwanted operation, I don't think the radio you use matters.

I recently had a sad ham moment and heres the story: I live in an area where I can easily connect and receive transmissions from a repeater in British Colombia. (I live in WA) I connected to the Canadian repeater when I was taking a hike at the park. I recited my callsign and started talking about where I was connecting from and the area in which I live. there were two farmers on the channel who both said they had GMRS setups in their tractors. one of the farmers asked me what my setup was and I said it was a UV5r with the Nagoya extended range antenna. I dont know why but that fact made one of the farmers really mad. as if saying I had a UV5R was some kind of personal attack on his character. The farmer then started saying stuff like "Oh the uv5r isnt registered to the FCC and you will get a 5 billion dollar fine and how his setup is some $700 box and is much better than the cheap baofengs and blah blah blah." I just turned my radio off at that point and sat at my favorite bench and had some wafer cookies.

I'm a HAM. Just got a GMRS Lic. Back story....I was at work and got into an accident. I was in the hospital for months. When I finally got to go home, had to sell off all my Ham equipment to help with hospital bills. Over 3 years later, I was better, and bough some more stuff. (C4FM). Seems the bands had "dried up", and a week would pass before I heard anything. Did the MARS/ CAP mod on my Yaesu and found out many of my old chat buddies were on GMRS. But the "sad hams" still on the ham bands talked about the EXACT SAME THING as 3 years prior. "Bigger, better, faster, more" and how much they spend is the only topic. I'm a chatterbox by nature and will QSO about anything BUT radio equipment. OK a breif discussion, but that's it. How many logs your tractor can pull is more interesting.

A true story: I was tuned into another youtubers Camp Talk live one Sunday evening and the subject of offroad comunication and gmrs came up. He actually had a a few UV5R's he briefly showed and for reasons we all know its the obvious choice for most people just starting out who need to talk on the trail. It generated a lot of interest in gmrs in the live chat. BUT you wouldn't belive all of the dickheads that that discouraged total novices in the chat from even getting into gmrs and went so far as to scare them into believing they would be raided for buying the beloved UV5R! It was insane. I immediately started calling out the 's and combating the false information, scare tactics, and "just study for the test" arguments the 's were pushing. But the truth is we are few and they are many. We may never know how many people they discouraged in that chat, but I know of atleast one. She ended up with FRS radios from Walmart (and that bundle of lies) because she thought GMRS was no good. Im happy to say after reading to her from the book of first Notarubiconians 10:100 she is now a lic GMRS user.

That applies to all hobbies man. You have people that use it for practical purpose and others that eat, sleep and breathe it. The problem with ham is that since an exam is involved and some knowledge of the radio, you typically only attract people that do that as a full-time hobby. However, I can appreciate that. When I was studying for my ham license, I learned a lot from people that were very skilled in the art. Years ago when I was getting into CB before the days of youtube, your CB radio guys were the go to guys to learn how to adjust swr, get everything tuned up properly have a good radio experience. Without those guys, I wouldn't have known what in the world I was doing. My point, while I'm probably not going to hang out with a lot of those guys, those are the ones that I go to when I have questions.

The solution was to use a "General Delivery" address at the post office. Most post offices support it. This way you don't have to pay for a PO Box but get the same benefits. They just throw away your mail after 30 days. Since we aren't using it for mail anyway, it works out. They can only pinpoint you to a zipcode.

12:56 Here is a pure example of what you mentioned (SAD HAM). 2 guys got into it on the radio while using a repeater. They got into a heated argument for about 2 hours cursing at each other and really bashing each other in a very bad way. THEN threats started happening. A few ham operators then chimed in to tell them to stop and ppl were trying to get them to stop, it just kept going on. Until one of the guys said "Hey fkr I know where you live" and the other kept cursing & yelling even more. Well as they were yelling at each other, one of the guys was already making his way to the other guys house. about 40 minutes later you hear one of the guys scream in the radio. "This fkr is at my front door threatening me and he just threaten my wife when she answered the door" and as they are still yelling at each other on the radio, you can hear a child crying in the background and the wife screaming to the top of her lungs about this guy making threats in front of their house. ALL this because the FCC made peoples private home address readily available for anyone to get right on the FCC's website. THIS is why many people don't get their ham license. And in many cities it cost a lot of money to get a PO Box. its around $75 every 3 months in my city. This city has experienced a few of these types of issues a year. Which has become extremely dangerous for families. Specially with the amount of crazies out there in the world. And that social security number you have to enter when applying, got only knows where that is posted on their website for anyone to grab by web scraping their server. Just wanted to point that out. I wish Ham radio operator protested the FCC to get them to stop posting peoples private home addresses & make is readily available for anyone online. But, a man can only wish. Maybe one day Ham operators will do it in my lifetime. 🤷‍♂

For maximum explosive impact, I recommend taking the "wrong" side while working a 40m C.W. setup during Field Day. ;) The irony of "One of the reasons we set up this stuff in a park is to introduce new people to the hobby" contrasted with the same people making "Knowing code was a great 'gatekeeper' to keep the '11-meter types' out of the hobby" comments wasn't lost on me. I had to call B.S. on that "We do this to introduce new people" crap from the dreaded Sad Hams. They don't want new people in the amateur radio hobby. If more people were Technician Class operators, and went on to General or Extra class, then the Sad Hams would be less "exclusively special." Some of those folks are Sad Hams for that very reason: it's an outlet to feel superior to other people.

I actually just had a Sad Ham experience on a forum. I asked a general question about what system people who live out in the country use for alternate communications. I did mention, briefly, that I ordered a Baofeng UV-5R for scanning of emergency fire since I live in a fire danger zone. One particular person started talking about sun spots and how 'filthy' the baofeng is and he wont chastise me for using, he went on to chastise me for using it and other products made in China.

With the baofengs, it's one of those situations where it's a good radio until you get a good radio. If that makes sense. If you don't know what you're missing, you never know how bad it is. Having said that, I can definitely appreciate the low cost of Chinese radios and they have came a long way. It's made it possible for people to get into radios without having to spend a fortune.

You find them all over Radio Reference and for some reason they have to infiltrate the MYGMRS community too. Always crying that GMRS doesn't need DMR, or linked repeaters, or APRS. That us "non-hams" are lucky to get what we got already. I use GMRS mainly for necessity. But I also enjoy just chatting with randos on the local repeaters too, and that does make me WANT to seek out a ham license, but the elitest mentality of many (not all by any means) hams is very off putting. In answer to the sad ham age old question: yes... I AM too stupid to pass the test. I know radios, and antennas, and propagation, and watts ERP etc... But I have never been good at "testing" for some reason. I suppose that means I am not worthy of chatting on 2m/70cm with an off the shelf radio/antenna combo... And that is what makes me a "sad non-ham" I don't want 1000w broadcasting over a 100ft antenna with a mile of shielded coax. I don't want to hit the ISS I don't want to broadcast TV I don't need access to microwave bands... I just want to chat at 5W on my UV5R, and 25W on my DB25 with my antenna mounted on my balcony. That's what really keeps ME out of the hobby.

Some act like their Extra class license is uber special. Or they are better than most people, because they stay up late, every night, talking to some tropical fruit, named Giermo, from Guatamala! In Arizona most county sheriffs, fish and game, lake patrols, the National Park service and the offroad recovery services monitor channel 16 on the VHF marine band. FCC license is not required for 'pleasure craft', so I carry a Baofeng BF-F8HP as a backup for my KG-905G. The Baofeng allows me to monitor NOAA, FM radio and 156.8 MHz.

I'm a Ham, I enjoy your videos! I agree that a small minority of Ham operators sometimes give Ham Radio a bad reputation. I got my Ham license in 1991 K8CNN and just this year got my GMRS license WRKT687 I put up a GMRS repeater in Brunswick Ohio as GMRS has been getting more popular! and plan to put up a second repeater in Lakewood Ohio (should be on the air in 3 weeks!) I agree with your video, BOTH HAM Radio and GMRS both have a place! it just depends on what your needs and wants are from radio! I would encourage you to eventually get your Ham license, and talk on the local repeaters, I bet you will meet a lot of nice people, and as a popular KZbin creator, you can relate actual experiences you had using both! "Ham Radio 2.0" is another KZbin creator who explores and likes both GMRS and Ham Radio. I just think both are worth having. This is my first comment on your channel, Keep up the nice work!

Whats even more funny is that as much as you claim to hate my videos, not only do you keep coming back, you also take the time to leave comments instead of just going away and watching something else like a grownup would do. Could you do a video comparing CB with GMRS CB has been around a long time and is (some say) pretty much dead as far as usefulness. Would you say that CB was the forerunner of GMRS. Did CBer's kill the band by the use of, well lets say not family orientated language or are there other factors. GMRS is free and open will it stay a true family band that "little ears" can listen too or will GMRS over time self destruct like CB. Not any repeaters in my area for to monitor. What's your experience. It is true that if you don't like what you hear just turn it off, and that's exactly in my opinion what many have done with CB throwing their radio in the trash bin. What's your take...

When I got into the Ham world I started going to a local repeater lunch that was held every week at a fast food restaurant. I found a couple of people I liked and learned from. Unfortunately the bulk of the group was made up of very sad hams. Most all of the people were very well versed in radio and electronics some with 50 plus years experience. Real hard core techs that were truly impressive but were still sad hams. I remember asking why I shouldn't I have my roger beeper on. You would have thought the place was on fire. Gnashing of teeth, exorsist style of convulsing in the aisles, cats sleeping with dogs, on and on. They lost their minds. I asked this question because Randy made the suggestion in one of his videos. I kept a straight face the whole time. What made my sad ham group even worse than the normal group was that it was 98% made up of a certain religious group and the ham part of the meeting was secondary to their church activites that centered around radio. The three or so people, including myself, that were not members were treated as outsiders. So cross a sad ham with a bunch of bicycle riding lunatics and you get a really messed up lunch meeting.

Hi randy I think you’re a very intelligent guy I think you do excellent reviews on equipment and conduct good testing on products. But as Charles Emerson Winchester said why give creedance to those cretinous yahoo’s that you call sad hams? Even hams hate sad hams. Nobody likes a insufferable little know it all! Lol. So keep doing what you’re doing ignore the sad ham he’s not worth your you tube time. What you do is a service just like your hero josh who I also watch and others that he hangs out with. They like you are the true heroes of you tube that helps his fellow radio enthusiast. You say ham is a hobby that is true. GMRS is a service.that’s the key difference. A hobby is supposed to be enjoyable a service is supposed to be useful but can be enjoyable too. So too sum it up I enjoy both had GMRS since the 90’s with my radio shack 19-903 walkie talkie still have it one of the best at the time. And I enjoy the ham radio hobby as well. By the way on your recommendation I purchased a radioddity gm-30 love it also a pofung p52uv love it and I have Motorola frs. I love your comedy but what you say is true. There are sad hams in the world. A ham who enjoys assisting others in learning and growing in the hobby is referred to as an "Elmer". In contrast, the sad hams, those who tend to chase people off like a grumpy old man yelling at kids to get off their lawn, their frequency, their repeater, etc. we refer to as Fudds. So we encourage those licensed radio amateurs in all levels to be an Elmer, not a Fudd. I have both a GMRS and a General Class Amateur Radio license. I have an emergency service background and can see value in both and in CB and FRS. I live in Southeast Louisiana where we seem to be a hurricane magnet, so most years we can count on some sort of major devastation to hit the area where we lose all landline and cell phone services, electrical service and the Internet. Our radios become a lifeline for many. Several of us served as volunteers in the city and parish (county to the rest of the country) Emergency Operations Centers (EOC) in order to maintain communications for the government agencies during disasters. I'm sorry you live in an area with so much flying pork around. Keep your head down and keep these videos coming!

Amateur radio came into being after radio waves (proved to exist by Heinrich Rudolf Hertz in 1888) were adapted into a communication system in the 1890s by the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi. In the late 19th century there had been amateur wired telegraphers setting up their own interconnected telegraphic systems. so sayeth google.

I put GMRS radios in two of my Jeeps so the wife and I can talk while on a trail or road trip. We just did a 3,300 mile road and camping trip with Midland MXT400's and they were perfect. HAM is more of a hobby for me. I play around with a 2m radio in my home office. All in all they both have great uses. There is no need for HAM and GMRS users to fight on the internets.

There are still only 22 GMRS channels (plus 8 repeater input frequencies). That's it. That's all there are. If you have a radio that will let you re-enter the same channels with different tones that's actually ideal. There could be a REV (reverse) button somewhere on the radio to monitor the repeater input, or you could program a memory allocation for that too. Some radios will let you, many won't.

HAM began in 1908 and got it's name from the 3 people that originally talked via HAM. The word “HAM” as applied to 1908 was the station CALL of the first amateur wireless station operated by some amateurs of the Harvard Radio Club. They were Albert S. Hyman, Bob Almy, and Poogie Murray. At first they called their station “HYMAN-ALMY-MURRAY”.

Har! Excellent video. Right on the money too. As a ham that uses GMRS at least as much as ham repeaters I never bash GMRS, it's there for functionality only, not for technobating. I think that some older hams resent newer hams and GMRS users because their path to the hobby was a lot more difficult and expensive than it is today. They may resent the ease the new users are adopting the technology. And some of them have some pretty hateful thoughts and opinions about new Chinese radios on the market because they are more noisy than the expensive Ham radios that they hug and talk to every day. It is sad to see that kind of thing going on. GMRS is a great service and much better than CB radio in my opinion, it does the job it is intended to do very well. I really like your channel and have been watching a lot of your videos. I am both a Ham and a GRMS guy. In fact I even enjoy CB radio. My wife says I'm a radio whore lol! I like GRMS because I can outfit my whole family with emergency communications, and I even put up a Retevis repeater on GMRS Live and Repeater book after watching your videos. I recognize that I like radio which is why I have Ham liscence as a hobby but GMRS really is the best for using with your family and friends because I can hand my kids a radio, not break the bank account and know that if the towers go down we can communicate. I'm even exploring GMRS Live nodes which is a way cool national system for GMRS, just incredible. I've hit repeaters at nearly 20 miles with my raddioditty handhelds and I live in a small town that is only 5 square miles so for less than $500 I have a repeater, and all 5 of us have a handheld that does more than city wide communication. I think that is way cool. Of course, I do the radio nerd stuff too but I know some of my friends are 4 X 4 people so the radio is secondary to their actual hobby and that's cool too. There shouldn't be such hostility between GMRS and Ham. I think they both have their purpose and uses, and both are very important and awesome. I think CB is way cool too and I have some friends that I communicate with cb radio just as emergency communications in town. The bummer about cb is it is limited to 4 watts and I hope that someday they allow cb to have more watts because it is really a neat set of frequencies that is capable of so much more with more power! I am nostalgic for cb because my dad used one when I was a kids and we use to listen to the truckers on family trips. Keep the videos coming and take care WSBV341.

Now with some of the Chicom rigs it's a much cheaper hobby to get into. I'm an old fart now in y 60's and yes I've got some big bucks tied up in my ham shack. Anyway, I really enjoy your YT channel and especially your sense of humor. Sooo, if ham radio ain't your gig, do your gig which apparently you are. 😁

The only reason why I am a ham is so I can have the same license plate on my cars.

We used GMRS radios to talk at coffee shops during the Coronavirus lockout. We bought coffee & donuts for take-out, then sat in the car (dining room was closed) to eat & drink. We used the $10 eBoo radios to talk!

Not to worry... The FCC does not have the authority to bust down any doors or arrest anyone. They can only assess fines and that's after many warning letters. All the cases I have read where a "ham" was arrested, he was committing another serious felony such as interfering with police or jamming aircraft channels and in that case the FCC brought along a federal marshall to bust down the door and make the arrest. Federal marshalls do not care what is happening on GMRS frequencies.

In the 1970's in Scandinavia the CB/27MHZ/11 Meters/ was good enough for me. My 27MHZ interest was the entry for my radar engineering degree. Today, living in Central America, GMRS looks like it will cover my needs of talking to my 4X4 friends while on the track/-s. - I don't see a need for an amateur/HAM radio, not for me. It's like you say, Randy, I just want to be able to talk to my 4X4 buddies, that's all.

General class here. I thought I would have interesting conversations on the bands. Nope. Usually boring stuff about equipment, or political/religious crackpots. That is 80/40 meters. Sometimes it is far worse than the CB band. 2 meters and 70 cm can be interesting, but sometimes sad hams reside there, too. Most of them, however, don’t consider 2m/70 cm to be real amateur radio.

My sad ham story was when I told a local RACES group that I just got my technician license. Well that was a mistake. The "smart" guys basically laughed. You're right -- they're killing the hobby and chasing people away from it.

On Sad-Ham's who has a massive urge to prove themselves to be smarter than most... How many of them are members of MENSA? - I'd say a vast/massive majority of them are not members of MENSA because they will not even come close to qualifying for a membership. What a surprise... ;-) Randy... Yes, you are right, Sad-Ham's are annoying. They are arrogant stupids. They are the ones who doesn't understand the difference of a good/long/teasing/69 compared to a 3 minute missionary, right? Meaning ... Sad-Ham's should be exposed as well as ignored at the same time. - Exposing them, making fun of them, is the best way of eliminating their attitude. I'm with you on this mission. Sad-Hams are best eliminated by words. - Let's keep it up! 🙂

@ 9.45, good definition. amateur radio IS the hobby, GMRS radio HELPS other hobbies. and as a licenced amateur radio operator at foundation level (UK) i don't consider up to 50 watts as "toy" radio as my licence only allows me 10 watts!

As a ham radio licensee for 10 years I must give you the official and approved FCC regulation (per Part 90) of “sad ham” nomenclature for the “sad ham” affliction (or affectation as the case may be 😆). In the singular, as in ‘one’, the “sad ham” operator is called a “wanker”. In the plural, as in two or more, they are called “wankers”. When you encounter a condescending wanker on the air, the proper and effective disengagement technique is to raise their blood pressure significantly by verbalizing thusly, (but only if using any of the “phone modes” such as AM, FM or SSB, which is single sideband) by enunciating clearly and with proper modulation and with the microphone placed a perfect distance from your mouth, “Hey, buzz off wanker!”. This is the polite form. The impolite form is “f- -k off homes, and shove your 30 foot vertical antenna up the same rectal orifice your wanker head already occupies, it should fit just fine”. That is unless of course you are operating in CW mode using Morse code. Then you would send a very simple and abbreviated ..-. ..- which is the international and universally accepted “F U”. Now, I didn’t quite make it to the 10 paragraph book threshold like I wanted too, but it’s the best I could do. Hopefully this will help you and others dealing with “sad hams”. Basically, turn them into a “mad ham”.🤣😅🤣 (love your channel dude, keep em’ coming !)

Hmmm ... Did you forget to mention 'CW' communication in Amateur (Ham) Radio? That's where it all started, and has been responsible for more emergency communications than Voice (SSB or AM), or Packet. Unfortunately, learning CW also is the main reason for people not going for the Ham license. But, there is a relatively new Ham licence that does not require CW. Just thought you would want to know 🙂
