In this video I review Midland's newest hand-held GMRS radio, the GXT3000VP4 - The Midland GXT-3000 is a very easy to use hand held, also known as an HT, GMRS radio designed for "non-radio" people, for example hikers, off-roaders, air-soft players, etc. This GMRS radio is not made in China and it is not overly expensive making it a good choice for someone that wants a simple, easy to use GMRS radio.

Thank you again, Mr. Notarubicon, for reminding me AGAIN of the $35 GMRS license fee. I had to pay $70 for mine, due to the fact that this radio dork didn't want to wait to transmit on our free airwaves and make the FCC overlords sad. Just when the lower fee slides out of my memory banks, you bring it up again, reopening the wound. Back to therapy I go.

Years ago I had a pair of dirt cheap Cobra gmrs handhelds. We were using them more and more on our Jeep trips so I thought I’d spring for some better radios. I bought Midlands for about 3x what I paid for the Cobras. I could not tell a difference in the distance or clarity between the radios BUT I could not hear the Midlands in my loud Jeep when they were turned all the way up. In contrast, I had to turn the volume down some on the Cobras to not cause even further hearing damage than the Jeep was already causing. I gave the Midlands to a friend with a quieter lifestyle and never bought “expensive” radios again.

I’ve been using the GXT1000s for a couple years now for convoying on road trips and I love them. They’re very simple to use, which is a big bonus when most people aren’t interested in learning anything too complicated to use them. I put ours on the channel, I use “privacy” codes so we’re not distracted by any unnecessary chatter and away we go. Just squeeze the button and the other vehicle can hear you

I'm a tad bit confused on how the privacy tones are set up. Are channels 23 to 50 set up with random tones/frequencies? Or are they programmable. As for the repeater frequencies, is there just one set of the standard pairs and you can only set up one tone at a time?
@grigorirasputin5020
@grigorirasputin5020 20 күн бұрын
They are probably set up with random (but standard for Midland or at least this model) tones on channels 23 and above. The tones and corresponding channels should be listed in the manual and/or found online. As Randy noted, these allow only one tone per repeater channel, with only one each of the eight repeater capable channels, because in Midland World, nobody ever needs to use more than one tone on a repeater channel. I am guessing these radios only allow for setting whichever PL/DPL tone once for both Xmit and Rcv on a given channel. If so, that means if you try to use one of those all-too-common repeaters where the owner just did not have the extra 30 seconds it would have taken him to set his repeater's tone on the repeater output, you will be SOL because since his repeater does not transmit a tone on the output, it will not open the PL on your ht's receiver.

@@TheNotaRubicon Respectfully disagree. Our 70+ member Jeep club (we're all normal-ish people) recommends Midlands for our rides, but most of our members find them to be overpriced for what they offer and difficult to program our DCS tone. My complaint is that they provide no path to do more if your needs change or you devolve into a radio dork; you gotta start over with a Bow-wow, Wouxon, Tid, etc. We got a lot of UV-5-series users now and they're all happy with 'em. Just another out of the box off the shelf radio, non-GMRS licensee's will use to flood the GMRS channels with child like non-sense, babbling and mindless hide-and-go-seek games. We really needed this in the market didn't we....oh and it is repeater capable...that's great Midland.

Anyone that would babble child like non-sense and play mindless hide-and-go-seek games cannot afford to buy these radios. If anything, radios like this help reduce the problem.

They are not the same. Philippines has American bases on their land. They had 1 and now they have 5 since chinas started acting stupid.

"super-heterodyne"??? Is there a "super-homodyne" or a "super-nonbinary gender fluid-dyne"?
@TheNotaRubicon

The term for a non-Superheterodyne or SOC radio is 'homodyne' ....Look it up.

I heard from "some people" that an SOC radio is still a superhet, albeit with a single conversion and a low intermediate frequency.

Midland made a "real" gmrs handheld? Nevermind it's 2.35 watts, good luck hitting repeaters in urban areas lol

Thank you for the excellent example of what someone that never leaves the couch would say! BTW, using this radio I am able to hit a repeater 35 miles away.
