This might be an out of left field theory. But, I think Craig might have also been going through a manic episode when he made the decision to raise that baby with Manny. I don't know if the writers intended that but his behavior and the overly excited demeanor seems to be hinting at it.

craig had abandonment issues. his parents passed away, and growing up, he never received proper attention and instead was abused, until he was under joey’s custody. i think his need for wanting a family to love and raise, plus an undiagnosed disorder explains his behaviour.

I just finished my rewatch of the entirety of TNG/NC and I loved seeing Lola as a "we've come a long way, baby" story. Both Erica and Manny had very heavy two parters when they ended their pregnancies but Lola made her choice and went through with it all in the first act unedited. We even see the procedure being performed which is the first time I ever saw one on TV.

Ashley’s the worst for several reasons but announcing Mannys pregnancy to the cafeteria just to spite Craig is the thing that sent me over the edge personally. Manny had no idea he was still with Ashley either and her pettiness towards a very serious issue is pathetic and I judge Craig for getting back together with Ashley shortly after
@NotAVampyre

I can kinda see why she felt justified though. Yesterday Manny was apologizing and trying to make amends claiming Craig played her too. The all of a sudden they're lovey dovey in the hall AND they slept together?! It make Manny seem like a Grade A liar. Not to say it was the right thing, but I get why Ashley made that decision.

Well, for one, I’m glad they both didn’t fight one another for Craig, they both caught him lying! Shit, even Ashley slapping him in front of the whole school was cool with me. Even though it was low for her to do that I could understand why she did. Granted I do think she should’ve apologized to Manny because at the end of the day it was Craig’s fault However Manny isn’t exactly a victim in that situation, she should’ve known better than to be sleeping with an already taken guy and the consequences she was going to have to deal with . Though it did annoy me how the school was madder at Manny than at Craig even though he was the one who cheated but everyone seem to have praised him for it (like how Spinner was praising him for getting a girl pregnant) Ashley did seem to forgive Manny later because they were on good terms in season 7

Lola's abortion story is by far my favorite in degrassi. I loved how she knew what she wanted before she even confirmed she was pregnant. I know that if I was pregnant young than I would abort cuz for me kids are an option at all. I don't hate kids I just don't any of my own. And I loved how supportive yael was throughout it.

Personally I wouldn't choose abortion. However I think everyone needs to understand that having an abortion is a personal decision. There are life or death instances where an abortion is needed. Everyone is different . u don't have to like the idea or agree with someone doing it, but at the end of the day, it's the woman's body and she should have that right to end her pregnancy if she chooses.

I hate that all the pregnancy storylines weren't mentioned again after the episode, I definitely understand someone not wanting to talk about getting an abortion bc that's a sensitive and controversial topic but it's almost like degrassi is one and done with most situations like after a situation happens it's almost stuck in the episode and never spoken of again unless it's an addiction. Claire's break down above the dot was the only situation that no one really let go of until she had graduated basically.

Honestly, I wish we could have seen more of Tessa's side of the abortion, if you think about it she was the only one who went through it alone. Every character in Degrassi who had an abortion had someone be by their side. Erica had Heather, Manny had her mom, while Lola had Yael. While Tessa was on her only, I do believe it is pretty depressing to have an abortion, alone even if you are for sure that is the best for you, since no one likes abortion. No one is happy to get pregnant so they can abortion. Being in a similar situation as Tessa. My ex had a double life and ended up dumping me when I find out I was the side chick. I had pregnancy scary. I told him I might be pregnant and I will get an abortion. He was happy but never offer to accompany me or if I need financial help. Even if he didn't want to have this baby, anymore more than I did. Despite the fact he broke my heart, I still wanted him to be there since the thought of me going through this alone was just depressing even if I wanted to have an abortion. I am glad it was just a scare.

I really like Erica's storyline it was a whole pro-life and pro-choice battle. How does Liz assume Erica had an abortion, just bc she went to the clinic. My friend goes to Planned Parenthood for her yearly physical, that is the only place she can afford and trust. She always gets harassed by protesters even if she isn't getting an abortion. However, IDK if it's just me but I felt that storyline was random. Like the writers pull a name out of the hat, we never even got to see the type of relationship Erica had with Jason or how it ended. However, my fave storyline is between Lola and Manny. Lola knew what she wanted right away. She didn't feel bad about it, she felt bad that she didn't feel bad. Plus Miles has to be the first guy who was supportive of Lola getting an abortion. Craig and Dave were against abortion, while Joey and Jason never found out. Miles was only upset bc he felt like he should have been there to support her, not that she got an abortion. Then there is Manny, deep down I felt like she knew she wanted an abortion but was pushed into having the baby. Emma and Craig wanted her to go through with the pregnancy, even referring to the fetus as Maude, she didn't have a support system at home to ask for help. Her talking to Spike is made her stay true to what she wanted since she was the only person to ask if that what she wants. The moment Spike encourage her to decide what right for her, she had the courage to tell her mom she was pregnant and wanted an abortion. Manny was haunted by her abortion bc she didn't have the same support system as Lola. I'm sure once Manny got an abortion, her mother acted as if nothing happened. Emma and Craig gave her the cold shoulder. Manny was still the talk of the school, and the only person who actually talked to her with no judgement was JT. Lola even if she also had a strict dad, but she had a support system with her friends. The moment Yael found out about her having an abortion, they drop everything to be there for Lola, so she wouldn't go throught the abortion alone. Yael was there when Lola needed to talk. Before Yael, Lola was scared to go throught the abortion alone. Miles supported her decision and apology for not being there. Shay and Frank supported her decision 100%. So Lola was able to cope what happened unlike Manny.

I actually think it made sense that Erica would get pregnant. In season 2 of DJH, we learn how excited she is to French kiss a guy and how much she wants sensual and romantic experiences. It makes sense she might be willing to have sex with a guy who seems to love her even if she didn't think she was ready because "that's what you're supposed to do."

I really wish TNG or even NC went deeper in to the teen pregnancy like it was done in DJH. I feel like the raw power and emotion Spike and Erica were dealing with wasn't something we really saw in TNG/NC. Did a teen pregnancy happen? Yeah. But it didn't go as deep as it did before. And sure it probably was because we've seen the storyline happen enough for those who have watched all the Degrassi variants -- but not everyone has. Like i wish we saw Liberty break down a little more, I wish we saw Jenna have flashbacks of Ty but remind herself he's in a better place. I feel like for NC with Lola's, it was there, but could have gone further.

So a clear missed opportunity was any kind of backstory concerning Mia Jones. She gets introduced baby in tow and no sign of a baby daddy for a season and a half. Considering the burden she treats teen motherhood as I'm wondering if it was even her decision to have Isabella in the first place. Plus thanks to the actress' departure her character gets the best possible result. A fashion model career while Mia's mother raises Isabella. BTW, did Lucas or Jane inform her that grandpa Vallieri was a child molester?

I’m sorry I’m late to the discussion here. I was off on a much-needed week-long vacation, which I don’t get a lot of since my job doesn’t provide paid vacation/sick time. But now that I’m here... It truly is abhorrent how so many people in such status’ of power feel themselves fit to pass laws that prohibit same-sex/interracial marriages in this day and age, and especially over matters about individuals and their own personal physical needs, and thus robbing them over their own autonomy! On the surface, it just might seem like an easy solution to just not have sex (certainly not when still in high school), but then there are some factors of unplanned pregnancies that others (specifically men) tend to over look, like the reason as to why women need birth control medication. To assume that things are as easy as “Sex can wait” or “You don’t need sex to survive”, paints the situation in such a dangerous false dichotomy. I’m glad that shows like Degrassi have the grace and maturity to tackle this type of matter in a respectful way. For my end, I’ve decided when I was a kid, that I never planned to get married and have kids, and I’m still in that mindset. I’m happy being single as I still have a large circle of friends. But I think it should go without saying that you should never have kids unless you’re ready to go out of your way to prepare for the unexpected that always comes with raising a new human being (which is a whole other level apart from raising a pet). There are those who want children just to keep a family legacy going or other reasons that ultimately just seem more selfish and just completely dismissive of the needs of the child in question. Raising a family means putting the child first and recognize that they will grow up to be their own being, and that what worked for you won’t automatically work for them. (And if they are missing some essentials while growing up, it can impact them in heir later years that may make it harder/impossible to turn around!)
@NotAVampyre
@NotAVampyre 2 жыл бұрын
And sorry I took so long to respond! I'm glad you got some well deserved time off! Yeah, the "just don't have sex" argument goes hand in hand with abstinence only birth control, which is bs. This stuff happens, even to people being careful. Hell, it happens to people who don't choose to have sex. Stealing this private right while claiming people don't need it if they make "the right choices" is utter bs. And like you state, no one should raise a child who isn't ready to. That's not some divine punishment to the parent (particularly the one who gave birth), but a punishment to the one born. Even if all of their financial needs are met, they're unlikely going to get the mental and emotional care needed to thrive because their parent(s) weren't ready to have them. So much can go wrong even with planned pregnancies. It's so stupid and I hate that we're very close to losing this fundamental right that affects everything. Well, of course except for the politicians who get to play morality police while helping their mistresses/partners get abortions.
