THANK YOU, FOR EXPLAINING, AND DEMONSTRATING THESE CLIMBING DEVICES. I RECENTLY STARTED BUYING A WHOLE PILE OF CLIMBING GEAR, IN ORDER TO BEGIN CLIMBING TREES,.. I HAVE A BIG WHITE PINE, THAT I NEED TO EVENTUALLY DE-LIMB, AND TAKE MOST OF IT DOWN, EXCEPT FOR MOST OF THE MAIN TRUNK ...(I'LL LEAVE THAT TO DECAY FOR AWHILE, FOR THE LOCAL WOODPECKERS, ETC.). I BOUGHT A COUPLE OF PETZL ASCENDERS, ( R & L HAND), AND, FOOD LOOPS,.. CLIMBING VIDEOS FOR BOTH ROCK CLIMBING, AND ARBORIST WORK, HAVE BEEN MY OBSESSION, LATELY!! THERE'S A LOT TO LEARN, AND MUCH TO CONSIDER, IN ORDER TO WORK SAFELY, OFF THE GROUND!!...

For anyone watching in 2023 and beyond, prices on these have come way down. Amazon has the all metal Fusion Wrench Tether combo shown here for $160 total, not $280. Grigri is $99. Grigri+ is $115. Petzl Zigzag without swivel is $200. With swivel is $235. Chicane+Biner is $166. Rope Runner Pro $400. Akimbo $400.

I haven’t had trouble with my zigzag and chicane setup for limb walking. It is a stretch, but I can tap on the zigzag with my pinky and have comfortable control. However I’ve had it for over 2 years and it’s starting to slip, so I bought the rrp after watching a few of your videos. Hoping it’s everything it seems. Love the videos. Thank you for your intel.

I actually found a way to collapse the zigzag with one hand. If you put your index finger on the upper pin of the chicane and pull it down, you can reach the zigzag with your other fingers and push it down. It takes a bit till your´re used to it, but I think it works great.

Maybe because I weigh 260lbs I never have a problem paying out rope while using the zigzag and the chicane. All I do is slightly depress the zigzag ever so slightly and down, or out, I go. The chicane slows my descent but it only slows it, I have never had to touch it to go down, or out on a rope.
@DoinstuffwithDakotah3 жыл бұрын
I run the petzl setup. I love how smooth it runs, but i agree, the fact that you cant easily collapse the chicane is the ONE issue I have with it

Zigzag chicane, RRP, Akimbo, Unicender. What do you rate as your number one overall pick? I was going to get Akimbo because of the compactness, but it seems very picky to have the cleanest rope possible.
@Stridertrees2 жыл бұрын
If I had to pick just one I’d get the zigzag, but I’d put a rope wrench on it rather than the chicane. I don’t like the chicane.
@prestonhorton4497 Жыл бұрын
If anyone hasn’t said it already a great option to get your chicane close to the zigzag to make it tendable with one hand is to replace the carabiner connection between the zigzag and chicane with a quickee. Not technically petal approved because petal only wants you using their carabiners(money). But it is a totally safe option and is 3 or so inches more compact

Can you make a video on Rope runner pro with a moving rope system.. This video was definitely a great comparison for anybody looking to purchase a progress capture device...
@Stridertrees3 жыл бұрын
It’s really pretty straightforward, nothing changes except that instead of having the end of the rope anchored in the canopy it’s anchored back to my bridge. No other adjustments necessary. I often switch back and forth in the same tree depending on how I need to move in the canopy.

Which is the best mechanical device for pitch have you found? I think you've reviewed the Roperunner Pro and the Uniscender, is it one of these (or both?). I take it hitch cord doesn't fair well with pitch?
@Stridertrees3 жыл бұрын
I think both the Zigzag and the unicender perform just fine on a pitchy rope (less so with the zigzag if the chicane is also involved) the rope runner pro is affected negatively but not nearly so bad as the akimbo, and yes hitch-cord is also awful.

What rope would you suggest for the rope runner pro?
@Stridertrees Жыл бұрын
most Modern arborist climbing ropes will work well with the RRP. You could try most any 24 Strand double braid in the 11.5-12.5 mm range and it'll work fine. Just start low and slow and use the adjustment on the bird to dial in the feel for what you want. Probably should avoid any of the 12 or 16 strand solid braids though.
@christianmannel64133 жыл бұрын
what do you like more , rope runner or akimbo?
@Stridertrees3 жыл бұрын
I use the akimbo more often, because it’s quick, compact and easily adjustable and I tend to have at least one newer clean rope to run it on, but as soon as all my climb ropes have pitch on them the akimbo goes in the bag and the RRP comes out.

It is, and I have one, but it doesn’t get used because I have trouble tending the rope smoothly with one hand.
@jackberdine3 жыл бұрын
Because you have to tie knots and that can be clunky for some people. That’s the ideal device in my opinion. A static amount of friction + a hitch (adjustable friction) in the smallest configuration possible.
