The inconsistency with Rebecca between Zero and remake, i always told myself that her reverting back to not being as strong willed, was the fact that after the events of Zero, with Billy now gone, she was alone, back in another Hell hole. Seeing more zombies and other BOW's, most of the teams just gone, maybe fatigue just caught up to her by then. Mind you, it's definitely not a good explanation, but i couldn't think of a better one

It's not that bad of an explanation. Let's not forget that she's still wandering the mansion alone successfully for quite a bit and not freaking out fighting the tyrant. It's really only a few slip ups, which is still not that much if you consider that she's doing a double shift AND this being her first mission ever and her not even primarily being trained for combat. So she messed up once when having only a pistol to fight a hunter and cried a bit after hearing about Richard dying. That's still holding up pretty strong overall. And yes, her mental state would definitely have been better during RE0 from both having still been fresh and well rested, aswell as have a veteran like Billy by her side for alot of the time, which would also be a calming influence keeping stress lower. Especially since Billy also had a very calm personality under pressure aswell.

My head cannon for the characterization difference with Rebecca in 0 and the REmake is that she was mentally and physically exhausted after what she went through the night before. She got sloppy and made mistakes and without Billy there for extra inventory space, she had to leave a lot of equipment behind so she could move fast enough to avoid the cerberus in the woods enroute to the Spencer mansion.

RE0 is the one RE i beat once and never touched again. Not because it was bad but 1) it was too damn difficult 2) i hated not having an item box 3) I thought Rebecca was a weak character. It’s not a bad game and it looks beautiful and i also liked how they explain the reason why the T-Virus was leaked. It’s just a different game and kudos to Capcom for trying something else. I ‘m also to this date very puzzled as to why neither Billy or Becca have appeared again in any RE game. Maybe the devs thought of them as weak characters? I would have preferred them over the new characters introduced in RE6. Anyhow, great job as always Chole. Enjoying this series a lot!

For example, Leon goes from naive and reckless cop in RE2 to unaffectable snarky ladyman agent in RE4 to stoic and pragmatic agent in Degeneration and then make a combination of these characterizations in other materials like Darkside Chronicle, RE6, REmakes etc. Claire went from children-loving mother-like young girl in RE2 and other materials to a more foul-mouth and flirty valley woman in RE2R. Jill went from serious, open-minded and professional in almost all RE game to the foul-mouth and angsty woman with trust issues in RE3R and Death Island. All of these issues stem from inconsistent writing style, more presense in English versions in the franchise.

2 things that I wanted to touch on, 1 being something you covered and I wholeheartedly agree with. 1: the disconnect of how Rebecca’s character in THIS game shows us just how badass and relatively independent she is (as a “rookie”) for taking down over a ton of monsters before she ever makes her way to the Spencer Mansion. Only to appear in RE1 (original or remake) to seem like a completely weak character that relies on the assistance of someone else to save her from certain perils. And 2: I’m sure you’re going to cover this much later on in another video you will have made (if it’s not out by now). But I love how the Umbrella Chronicles helps close the gap between the end of RE0 and the start of RE1. Because for several years, I would wonder, how did Rebecca get to the Spencer Mansion all by herself after her and Billy part ways at the end of 0. I won’t spoil it for others, but I just love the “attention to details” that the develops come up with to help fill in and close gaps. Also I guess a 3rd thing: I just wish there was more of a story to Billy, because honestly, where is Billy anymore? Unless I overlooked something, I don’t recall hearing about Billy anymore in the RE universe. And 4: I hate that it took the developers so long to reintroduce Rebecca’s character much later in the universe, I honestly thought her character was killed off. Ok, I’ll shut up now on this. But great content, thank you again for bringing another chapter to the story. I was definitely nodding my head and saying YUP most of the time. 🫶🏻🙏🏼🫶🏻

It's an awesome game. Sure, it's item mechanics can be punishing, or just frustrating for players that are new to the game, but the rest of the game is peak Resident Evil goodness. All it takes is having the patience to play through the game. To me, it's like the Resident Evil equivalent of SH4. It's a great game that did some experimental things. Those experimental features were functional, even though they weren't necessarily convenient for a players enjoyment, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the game.

Yes first day on the job and yes not trained primarily for combat in a very unique, unexpected situation, but I think her RE0 personality fits the overall bill better than her (also very limited exposure we see) in RE1. AND there's one scene people don't see often, because it requires not saving Jill, but she does show that exact same more determined personality she has in RE0 in that scene in RE1 aswell when she stays behind to fight the creatures off while Chris calls the helicopter. The personality change that Leon goes through between the 2 both beloved RE2 and RE4 are much more drastic, but I never hear any complaints about that.

Super true. For me it's one of my favorites. Best difficulty for me, having the only hard mode that actually had me scraping by on supplies through the entire game, rather than building a stockpile, which was great. That's what you want for tension, I wish the other old style REs also had that 1 level higher difficulty. (And RE0 could have used an easy mode.) 2 of my favorite protagonists aswell, who I found very likable and to have the best chemistry of all the RE teams. The only other old style RE with those atmospheric static camera angles and real survival horror gameplay that also has good graphics. The only thing that bothered me a bit was that there was way too many enemy types that were just animals, which I don't find as atmospheric as the usual monsters.

Such an underrated protagonist, Rebecca went through a 24 hour zombie monster nightmare, got 4 hours of sleep then it starts over in the Spencer mansion with PTSD. All at the age of 18. That continuity issue is literally her running out of ammo if you look at her gun. The Resident evil book covers this really that she was suffering trauma as the day before she dealt with all that. In the cutscene, her gun is out of ammo but everyone brings this up. Plus the developers hated her. Why they hate her so much is beyond my understand. I like that there is no item boxes which is cool cause you have to strategize without the magic box following you around. I know other Resident Evils when you need an important item and your inventory is full then hope you like back tracking to the save room or use that health spray you just picked up. I could only imagine if RE2 and RE3 got this treatment. The best way to play this game is to not carry healing items. You will never have an inventory problem and health items will be there. I normally leave a health item in a room that is locked I will come back to later. Trust me works wonders, especially those darn monkeys. Worst enemy but also fun to run from.

Same here. The modern RE4+ REs are fine, but at the end of the day they're just another action shooter game, of which there are a billion around already. That atmospheric fixed camera angle survival horror and even the tank controls, were very unique and have unfortunately completely disappeared now that RE switched genres. Old RE style games are a different market. One that I would be in and one that is currently not served.

You can save more ammo if you take zombies on with the knife: in Zero, if you knife a zombie's legs twice you knock them down, making it quite possible to take a zombie on with the knife and not lose health doing that.

Gotta love RE0's item dump mechanic..you can turn one room in a storage place, but I think there's also a dump limit. As long as you don't forget your dump spots then it's convenient.

Just some stuff to discuss. Rebecca remains a consistent character throughout Zero and Remake. Chris had to save Rebecca in Remake because she ran out of ammo. If you check the cut scene the slide on her pistol has popped into the open position and that is the only time she panics in Remake. In RE:DC Rebecca's character doesn't measure up to Zero's portrayal for sure. We agree that RE:Z is definitely the most difficult of the original haunted house style games. Especially punishing if placed on Hard difficulty. Backtracking for all the ammo you can bring to lab and sewer treatment station is a must. And unlocking the Rocket Launcher on Hard is an expert level challenge. I would recommend unlocking all the Leech Hunter rewards before even attempting it.

I've always loved Zero, didn't know people hated it until the past few years. Is it perfect? Hell no, but I like that it tried something different. Also liked some of the story and characters. Billy was badass, Rebecca was cool and anything with Wesker and Birkin is ok with me. Still remember playing this so many years ago on my Gamecube and now have it on my PS5 and Xbox Series X. *Capcom needs to start making a "Resident Evil Classic" series where they remake RE2,3 etc in the same style as RE1* and then for RE1 a modern action style remake. The gameplay is so different between those games that it very much is 2 different markets. And it should be much cheaper to produce those alternative remakes aswell, as they already have almost all the assets they need from their round 1 remakes.

Of the "bad" mainline entries, or at least the ones I consider my least favourites (Zero, 5, 6, REmake3 and Village), Zero is my favourite and for good reason. The puzzles are a blast, controlling two characters at once (returning player Rebecca and new character Billy) feels like a dream, the atmosphere is top notch, the plot is as well written as the game it serves as a prequel to, and graphically, it's as good as REmake1 is. Really, the main reason this game has such a bad reputation is because of the inventory system. I don't mind sharing items between characters, but having weapons like shotguns take up two spaces of inventory and denying you a substitute for the item box (or even the item box itself) was a terrible idea and I'm not surprised that this was the only time they tried something like this. What I feel would've been a great game has been crippled to be just a good one by one of the worst item management systems of the series, and I'm not surprised people look this over in favour of its cousins, REmake1 and 4. P.S. ICYW what my second favourite of the bad main entries is? 5. Hands down. It's a sell-out, it's misguided, it's tedious on an initial playthrough and the plot stinks, but the gameplay is actually fun and it has some pretty creepy moments and a few good scares. Unlike Resident Evil 6.

Zero was my first RE game. Anyway, many of the complaints about it were about the plot holes the game has from what I hear. Oddly enough there were plans to kill Rebecca off in zero because someone didn't like women who are feminine which obviously was scrapped due to her being in RE1. Also, you can use the C/Left stick to move the character you are not controlling.

I played this game for the first time on stream a few years ago, I remember that one time I spent one hour just moving all my inventory from one room to another since I put everything in the same save room at the beginning. It was a mess, I also didn’t really like the locations beside the train, to me it felt an uninspired version of the mansion from REMake. But I’m still glad to have played it since it’s the last one to use that classic formula.

You forgot to mention how the locations don't add up. The Factory /Marshalling Yard, and the underground tram were located on edge of Raccoon City but are right next to the training facility? Not to mention the magic elevator towards end that connects multiple locations that aren't even near one another. And how the Spencer Mansion is visible at the end. When you literally took a speeding train in the opposite direction for God knows how many miles.

I don't really mind the inconsistencies with the story. The stories in these games are pretty goofy anyways. Another weird thing is that Zero makes it seem like the training facility, the factory from RE2 and the Spencer mansion are right next to each other. But that's just one of the weird videogame things that help create the dreamlike atmosphere. The best things are exploring the cool locations and the atmosphere. I think that graphically Zero was a minor downgrade from REmake on GameCube, but the HD remaster made Zero look as good as the REmake. I wasn't even aware that the games had quick reload. I have to check if that works on the original GC games or only on the remasters.

I think the *biggest mistake they made,* that makes RE0 so hated by some is *mislabelling the difficulties.* They're all basically 1 step up from all the other classic REs. Easy is normal, normal is hard and hard is very hard by the standards set by the other games. Probably a bit above that even. That has most people choosing a difficulty too high for them and then, also lacking the ability to lower the difficulty during a run, makes them get frustrated with it.

Seems like the whole premise would have worked better as a coop game, would be awesome if they remade it one day with two player multiplayer. speaking of which, you should definitely check out resident evil outbreak. you can actually play the online multiplayer using a ps2 emulator which is mind blowing to me but it works!

Also it has some of the best puzzles in the series! All the monsters felt dangerous and a threat, how a true survival horror should be. I think difficulty of this game is really overblown. Sure first time playing it seems hard but once you find some tips you realize most boss fights aren’t that hard, you can skip most of leech men and inventory management isn’t that bad as long as you aren’t trying to carry every weapon with you (like first shotgun which you don’t need). It was a fun game and I got platinum in it and the only reason why it took me so long is because I didn’t realize you have to do most of things on the same save.

For 0 i always had one of them ditch the pistol by the training facility. Id give billy the shotgun and grenade launcher with ammo when they were needed and had rebecca as the healer mule and let billy pick up all the keys. In all honesty re0 feels like a prequel to re1 original and not remake. Theres just something about its atmospheric charm that reminds me of the original re1. Remake 1 feels like an alternate hellish reality. If you ask me the following games are what I think should be canon. RE 0, RE 1 OG, RE 2 OG, RE 3OG, RE SURV, RE CVX, RE DA, RE 4 OG, REV 1, RE 5, REV 2, RE6, RE 7 & RE 8. Also bits of remake 1 should be canon more specifically the lisa trevor segments and to be even more specific the chris versions of her scenes. They should be what chris went through before jill found him in his cell in the original re1.

Zero with the item box mod makes the game infinitely better. The reason zero was not the most adored is mostly because of those mixed bag of in theory good ideas that were poorly implemented. I think it is quite telling that a game going against everything zero and remake set being the best RE game shows how outdated a lot of those concepts were too. In the end, zero is indeed underrated, but only if you can get past most of weird design choices.

Disclaimer: i didn't watch the whole video and never beat RE Zero, but there was always something i liked about it. It seems like the hardest resident evil to me though.

Agreed with the difficulty. I mean I'm a 40 year old gamer so my reactions arnt that fast anymore. Even back in the day I struggled. Don't even think I managed normal. Veronica I did manage to beat and man that was tough!

The "how did Rebecca go from kicking ass in Zero to being weak and helpless in 1/REmake" thing is just an extra layer of "hey, uh, what?" over really the whole baseline of "Rebecca is 18 years old but already field medic for a super-elite weirdly (even for American police) militaristic police squad _and also_ their helicopter mechanic, all of which should require _way more time_ in training, education, prior work experience, etc. than is available by then, no matter how much of a "child prodigy" you are." It's a shame, because I _do_ like Rebecca's character and even... _most_ of what goes on in Zero - I'm not fond of the forced two-character shuffle puzzles or the 2000s _brown-ness_ of the color palette - but I suppose it's also emblematic of how the dev teams just generally can't seem to make up their mind on just how capable their characters should be given their supposed backgrounds, up until 4-6 where they basically get to superhero it up in contrast. Also, I notice you never tried to explain just why "T-virus leeches absorb Marcus' memories and basically resurrect him" involves "also half the time he swans around looking like a robe-wearing bishounen choir boy who occasionally breaks out into song". 😁 (I mean, not to kinkshame, you do you Marcus... except for the part where you decide to destroy the world... but seriously, what.)

I feel like the frogs and lack of GameCube hardware sales had a lot to do with this. Game tbh should just be remarketed as a coop survival horror I know coop gets flak for good reason but this specifically could work considering they just can't be together all the time

One of my fave RE games. Some of the flaws are annoying but I don’t even care. It’s so gorgeous and the wesker mode they added to the remaster is the funniest shit ever. Some of my fave RE locations and visuals. The lore stuff was weird but RE has always had a ridiculous plot haha in the best way possible

For me, anything that looks and feels like REmake is already a win. My only gripes with 0 are the monster designs, most of them are X but big. I understand from a viewpoint of, this are the byproducts of having the virus being developed in a place surrounded by forest but even so. Despite that it has my favorite Tyrant design in the Proto Tyrant.

A very good game with unique and amazing locations and atmospheres (probably some of the best in the whole serie). The story is weak, I agree, if compared to the original trilogy, but it's ok. Personally I didn't like the story of the attack made by the reborn doc Marcus and his leeches, while I really loved all the lore about the story of the old doctor Marcus and his lab. I also appreciated the story between Rebecca and Billy. A tipycall RE story. I agree, Rebecca's charachter doesn't fit very well with RE1, but only in the Chris storyline. if you consider canonical the storyline of Jill, where Rebecca doesn't appear, RE0 can be effectively a good prequel, or better, a good spin-off. About the gameplay, it's innovative and interesting but the lack of the item box sometimes needs too much backtracking. I think the problem could have been definitly solved with a few boxes in the key points. In conclusion, not the best RE, but probably one of the most interesting and underrated games of the serie.

@@LM-jz9vhit’s not the lack of an item box it’s the layout of the games areas and progression. Instead of being in one big area like the mansion that you’re constantly back tracking in, you’re put in a handful of medium size areas. Once you completely finish that area you’re onto the next so you have to try to get all your items that you want/need from one area to the next

You have to play this game with the chest mod. i did it and enjoyed it like a new RE game honestly , it adds a lot of replayability and looting which is the basic formula of RE games

I enjoyed it. Really wish they'd have called Resident evil 4 "PARISITE : Resident Evil". Who's sequel would have been PARASITE 2. It would have allowed them to keep making BOTH styles of games. Its a friggin shame really. Tank control RE games are basically a Jpeg picture as the background (easy to make, ai can do it now FOR them instantly) a character model (Easy to create) and a border within each Jpeg where they can walk/interact with things. I honestly think Ai in a few more years could have been making entire Tank control Re games for them with ease... free money. But instead they went the route all AAA wants to go, same cheesy, feels like your playing a movie not a videogame type stuff. Remakes were terrible games to play, but great to watch as a no comment youtube video for free.

Definitely not. Easy on RE0 is probably above "normal" in all the other classic REs. You can basically add a little bit more than 1 step up in difficulty for each setting to convert it into the usual measurement.
