I bought this 1992 Mercedes S-Class that was destined to be scrapped because it's a non-runner. Can I get it to run once again and save it from the scrapyard?

I know it wouldn’t be very economically viable to do so, but what I will tell you as a 20 year old who’s dream car is is practically exactly one of those. An old Mercedes with the AMG body kit and wheels with a hearty engine. I would never let one of those go and in your specific case that car has christened your new workshop. Naturally welding and cutting that whole car to get it back to a good standard would be expensive but I think that would be my dream for it. Now I’m destined to drive a 2009 Cat N astra 1.4 as my first car so I’ll watch for hopefully this car to have a long and expensive life. For perhaps a lucky man like myself to drive a similar beast in the future. Fantastic video and I’ll look forward for the next one as I always have.

I looked up the cars/engine on the german wiki, which stated "the ADAC statistics did not view this engine (M103) favorably, due to unreliable fuel pump CU and ignition system". :P The 3.2L M103 iirc was only in the AMG 190E. For spare parts, there are also some models with M103 engines but M104 Parts numbers, because Mercedes shipped the old engines rebadged, i.E. in the W124 4Matic. However, one thing that's very well possible: the engine could have a larger bore. During that period (and keeping in mind the AMG Bodykit) it was very common to tune engines by giving them a larger bore. One thing I'd recommend as a "best practise" is checking compression before ordering parts, so you don't end up throwing money at a dead engine.
@ruairidh2575
@ruairidh2575 5 ай бұрын
Hi Mike, the m103 was also available in the 124 variant as well. The 3.2 litre m103 AMG engine is known as a “baby hammer” In the 190e. I currently own a Ron Stratton AMG built s124 with the m103 3.2 AMG engine. It’s also possible any 80’s and early 90s car could have an m103 AMG as it’s a premerger car they were all built to the customers spec.
@MadIIMike
@MadIIMike 5 ай бұрын
@@ruairidh2575 I think we have to differentiate between AMG's Engine for the 190 and tuned engines. AFAIK the 190 AMGs engine had different camshafts for more stroke and a larger bore (with pistons, obviously). So you could have tuned a M103 to that spec with those parts without it being a AMG engine (with badge and stuff). I assume AMG would have sold parts or conversion prior to the release of the 190 AMG. That said, it's also possible for Nino's car to have a 3.2L by other means, as AMG isn't (wasn't) the only one offering such parts. My point in general was, that he shouldn't rule out having a 3.2L engine, just because it doesn't look like the 3.2 AMG from the outside.

This is painfully close to what I went through with my -69 w108 280SE, but I tried on and off for 3 years to get it running, until an expert showed up to look at it, poked his head under the bonnet and said "your linkages are out of alignment". He could just see that, and it had been done such long time ago that the threads were sort of rusted/corroded back the way they were so you couldn't tell otherwise. He fiddled for a sec to get it adjusted and it fired up and ran immediately, I had done EVERYTHING from changing pumps and everything in the ignition, read hundreds of forums and no one knew what to do, even several skilled mechanics. I even gave up and redid all the brakes instead. But then I could get it inspected and road legal for the first time in 20 years. What a car those old Mercs are! Imagine my relief once it fired, I almost cried 😅

@@vercingetorige400 The throttle linkage to the fuel pump was adjusted for more fuel and the linkage to the intake was adjusted for less air, probably to compensate for some poor running in the past, but once I fixed everything else, it wouldn't run at all. Also the reason the old owner sold it.

Nice video, someone should save this old Merc! The cap and rotor arm should be the first thing to check on any Merc with these M103 engines. They are notoriously weak and the parts aren't the cheapest. One thing to check is the dizzy cap cover. The cover cracks causing the metal inserts to collapse and so when you tighten down the cap it gets pulled out of alignment which causes all sorts of misfires and rough running issues. I binned the cover and spaced the cap bolts out with a couple of washers on my W124 260E with an M103, worked great after. Nice to see you have a new cover, Don't over tighten it when you put it on!

My W124 failed to start. It would run on EZ Start - so no fuel...The fuel pump relay was the culprit - the output pins had cracked solder joints visible with a loupe. I removed all the old solder, used flux and re-soldered the pins and the problem was solved. It had been intermittent up to the point of failure and I would pray it would start. The dry joints were the problem. Great to see you get it going.

What makes this channel a treat to watch is how relatable you are! Keep it like this, and good luck going ahead! Concerning the Merc'... If I should decide on it, I'd get the wheels and body kit off of it and sell them, put something in their place just to make it look somewhat nice. If the underbody is worth anything I'd fix up the car to a certain extent, and make some content on it in the meantime and when it is in a sellable state I'd sell it to someone who will take care of it and restore it.

So either sell all the parts or get another in tact chassis and replace everything. Third option would be to try bodywork. You now have the workshop to try something like that. 😂

Greetings from ex brit in Canada love the content, great work I would Sell the wheels & Body Kit put it to a shop lift, at 61 and watching your videos I feel all the previous pains and struggles of doing things on the ground so a mirror reflection. Back to the Merc add stock wheels and sell as is running.

I absolutely love watching your content, it’s so brutally honest and informative as well as the odd cackle of laughter with the shed scenes and dropping of spark plug sensor. We have all endured moments like that! I agree with others about selling wheels and AMG kit, get a lift and produce more content.

I really like these long mechanically focused videos. A good balance for the "car challenge" videos on other UK channels which seem to be sadly moving away from relatable/affordable cars...

You are amazing. You are a better mechanic/technician than most that work on my cars. Like you I am an amateur mechanic, however, when I need to work underneath my cars, I don't have the stamina you have demonstrated, and I have to have an independent shop do the work. I have owned and loved 7 Mercedes Benz models during my motoring life. Best built cars in the world. I say put together an estimate of how much money it would take to restore this baby - not to showroom condition, but to allow it to reach 300,000 miles as a daily runner which it will do. You should get 135,000 miles of good comfortable, inexpensive and reliable motoring. (If you like the car!). $15,000 restoration or less it would be worth it, depends on how much of the work you are willing to do.

Part of the charm was watching the struggles on your back in the wind and rain working on cars. Like 90% of us watching. That was the connection, please don't lose that. Don't get me wrong, love that you have a garage. But please please still do some work on the drive 😅

Man, its so wholesome watching your videos! Literally gives me the same feeling as M539, you are a natural at this KZbin thing! I can only wish to be able to fix cars with someone like you. Anyway, since the kit is not original to the car, just flog it, sounds like a no brainer when you can get such money for it all! Then bam, like you say free car, quality content, definitely cant allow this beauty to die!

Sir, I am so happy for you, this is one of my favorite channels, you are a real hoot, the content is very interesting, & I love the humble beginning, it's a veritable rags to workshop story, as a 63 year old ex pat Brit, I love watching for the scenery as much as the content, cheers big ears

Restore it, make it look the way it would have looked when it rolled off the showroom floor. Classic mercs look so good that way. Sure, you can make a few tasteful modifications to it. New to the channel, this is the third or fourth video I have watched and I was hooked to the insanely detailed troubleshooting and commitment in all of them. Keep up the good work!

Properly happy for you, my man! Love to see it working out for you and LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos. I was just telling my brothers that watching your videos, reminds me of my father’s approach to fixing up old cars that were just money pits. It’s a little hit of nostalgia, every time you post a video. Thank you for the great content. RE the car, get it fixed up!! Would love to see this car on the channel in a respectable state!

Great to see things working out and you going full time on KZbin. We like you, your humour and seeing the journey. With that in mind and the stacks of time and money a restoration would take, im saying sell it. You could even fix the basics like brakes, cracked light and water leak. Then sell it for profit and move onto the next one on your list.
