I've heard this song dozens of time. I used to also think about Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi, written 20 years before this one. But now, reading Jamie Wheal's book - "Recapture the Rapture - ReThinking God, Sex, and Death in a World that's Lost Its Mind," where, in chapter 2, he quotes this song - “And as things fell apart, nobody paid much attention," I was prompted to listen again, with the lyrics. I now realize that David Byrne and Joni Mitchell were both writing about the same thing - Joni noticing it and Byrne writing from the future, after the "falling apart" has played itself out. Its prophetic, and you can dance to it.

It’s a bit opposite though, isn’t it? Joni complains of trees being cut down for parking lots; Byrne, from a future where everything man-made is gone and nature has reclaimed the land, misses the commercial properties that once stood.

"In the world I see - you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty car pool lane of some abandoned superhighway."

What’s that from? It’ll happen, certainly.

Most of the hysterical environmentalists are screaming about progress destroying the natural world. In this song it's the exact opposite: the singer is used to modern conveniences for everything. Now that everything's back to "nature", they can't adjust. Which is EXACTLY how the hysterical environmentalists will react...because THEY are used to modern conveniences like Starbucks, Walmart, and fully funded social media outlets providing millions of tax-free dollars.
