Same here. I remember being younger than 5 and staying up late(probably like 10pm, but it might as well have been 3am) and seeing bits like the Bonestripper and the musical number on HBO. I went through most of my life (as in up until 23 minutes ago) assuming it was some wierd fever dream or maybe a reimagining of a less batshit movie I saw and had recurring nightmares about.

Believe it or not, this movie is loosely based on one of Dan Ackroyd's real life experiences. He claims that he was pulled over for speeding late one night in the middle of nowhere. Instead of handing him a ticket, the cop insisted Dan follow him through the woods to an isloated, creepy old mansion. Once inside, the cop introduced him to "the Judge", an extremely odd and eccentric older lady, who kept Dan there for hours and hours just to talk to him, before finally letting him go. the making of this movie is pretty interesting. it went way way over budget. I actually think it's a really funny movie but maybe that's just because I grew up watching it. I also feel like Chevy Chase's phoned in, detached performance somehow works in this movie because of how weird it is.

I refused to eat any kind of hot dog or sausage for about 5 years after first watching this movie. That dinner scene was as bittersweet as it gets. The coolest table and condiment set up ever created, all used for the psychologically damaging, inexplicably creepy eating of a bunch of hot dogs or sausages or whatever the hell they were. Someone could recut this movie as a straight horror movie and I'm sure it would be effective.

I remember seeing part of this on tv as a kid in the mid-90s. My parents and relatives had it on and they knew it wasn't appropriate for me to watch but the movie only had another 30-45 minutes so they had me go read some books and play with toys instead. I was at my grandparents house so the books there were new to me too, one was this giant book about the history of Mexican art, a lot of which was heavy on macabre imagery, especially Francisco Goitia and José Guadalupe Posada . (I was relived when I stumbled upon the colorful work of Frida Kahlo toward the end of the book) What I did see of the movie was so bizarre and I didn't recognize anyone at the time, so I struggled for years to figure out what it was. After awhile I wondered it was a fever dream I retroactively assumed was a movie, especially since in that same couple hours I had visually devoured a lot of surreal artwork. It wasn't another 15 years before I came across this. I haven't watched the whole film since but what I have seen is interesting, it's a bit less strange than I expected but still very, very weird for something that isn't a more artsy indie flick - especially considering the cast and budget.

It was over 20 years since I watched this movie, but 2 weeks ago I viewed it with my wife (it was her first time watching it). Now, Red Letter Media does a re:View on it. Coincidence? Obviously. I loved this movie as a kid and thought it would be a fun experience to share a slice of my childhood with my spouse. I was once again reminded that nostalgia goggles are a hell of a thing. Thankfully, we were able to enjoy the film as we ragged on it and laughed at its utter absurdity. Plus, we both love John Candy. Just seeing him on screen brings to mind all the joyful moments he brought to us growing up. He was, and is, a treasure that lives on in the memories of all those he entertained. Oh my God, I've been looking for this movie for other twenty five years, no joke. I remember watching this on TV in the early 1990's. I was probably about eight or nine at the time. I only remember part's of the movie like the insain house, the junk yard and the ending with the mutants and a train or something. I only remember little bit's of this movie but for some reason it always stuck with me. I thought many time's I found the film like with the crazy house in The People Under The Stairs and the mutants with the movie Freaks but I knew they wasn't the movie I was looking for. As a kid watching this. It definitely was a horror movie and a depiction of hell or a nightmare that continues even after you wake up. The fact that the whole town were in on it breaking the brief illusion of safety and the end where the judge is looking into the camera broke my sheltered innocent mind.

Look up the music video for that Digital Underground song. Not only does Dan Aykroyd cameo in the video, but he is seen standing next to Dr. Dre and Eazy-E while dressed as a member of NWA. He’s not in blackface, thankfully. And the sad thing is that for all of the passion and creativity Dan Aykroyd poured into this movie, he refuses to talk about it these days. There was a movie critic who was interviewing him for an oral history of GHOSTBUSTERS, and the interview went so well that the critic asked him if he’d ever be up to participating in an oral history of another film of his. Aykroyd cheerfully asked “What film would that be?” The critic answered it was NOTHING BUT TROUBLE, because he wanted to find out how this weird ass movie came to be. Aykroyd dropped the cordial tone and interrupted the critic before he finished the question: “That would be a terrible waste of time, I think we’re done, thank you.” Then Aykroyd immediately hung up the phone. End of conversation. Update 2023: On the Blu-ray features for Nothing But Trouble, Aykroyd says he's actually proud of the movie and its cult following, so there's now a touching sidenote to this story.

It's because he felt Warner Brothers butchered his Horror Comedy into a watered down pg-13 slapstick. When they showed the official screening of the film (the one that was re-edited) Dan and most of the main cast refused to attend.

The movie was produced to be R rated, one of the biggest reasons the plot has so many holes and oddities is because the studio left a ton of good stuff on the cutting room floor to get it down to PG-13. Supposedly the film as it was originally intended explained the characters far better and really played up the comedy by means of cartoonish violence and antics.

I'm just contacting you guys to make a suggestion. Please, please, please release a director's cut of Dan Aykroyd's Nothing But Trouble. Get the rights, do what you gotta do. I NEED to see the original version of this great movie. There is only a sub-par DVD release, we need a Blu Ray and we need it yesterday. This is without a doubt the most underrated movie of it's kind and it would be absolutely perfect if you guys did it over like your other great releases. The production for this movie was INCREDIBLE. It was oozing practical effects genius. Free reign imagination! It's like a fever dream come to life. Whoever reads this(even if this movie isn't your cup of tea) please put in this suggestion anyway you can. I would appreciate it beyond words could ever express. It needs to happen.
