16:39 - this clip was actually 30 seconds long but had to be cut due to copyright reasons, but a group of girls, girls of new york, girls of friends, girls being girls, from light to dark, trickled in with much immense clarity of joy and belonging that nothing else mattered but a bit of night music and conversation that could flow into an eternity i think all girls know, beyond age and the ladies who lunch and mesopotamian gossip. beyond everything i knew about friendship. friendship intermixed with girlhood is a world of its own only known to contained spatial patches, bathroom mirrors and picnic blankets, cried-on shoulders and the rims of goodwill wine glasses.

“Life is an accumulation of loss…”…what a punch in the gut perspective, right? I can understand the frustration of feminists in that era. That so little was changing. It’s interesting to compare this tone with the tone of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony in those very early days of progressively voicing their opinions in messaging. Endlessly fascinating.

so little has changed and so much has changed -- how can that be? Fran Lebowitz, when asked about feminism and the way times for women has changed, she expresses a great deal that a lot has, in fact, changed. but i guess it's a continuous fight for rights, a fight for what is right.

i like you in yr sontag era :) i def agree that her style isn't too "intellectual." something i appreciate so much about her writing is that she has excellent flow and style while taking on chunky topics. i regularly recommend some of her essays on philosophy as an intro to philosophers. much more fun and approachable, but not ~*fUn~*~ i absolutely hear you re loneliness. and missing people, disconnection, longing, etc really don't get easier. they shouldn't, in a way -- they're well deserved difficult feelings. people are in fact missing! and you are missing them! ideally, you manage to add other feelings of satisfaction and connection to the cocktail
@nathansnook2 ай бұрын
ooh! which of Sontag’s essays on philosophy do you recommend? is there a dedicated collection? i’m deep in interviews and talks and it’s been a joy ! and usually i like a cocktail but interesting to know the cocktail has more and more ingredients as years pass. i guess this is what people mean when they say a cocktail has complexity !!! ✨🍸
