Ok, there are so many arguments in this comment section about how this song is either totally sweet or completely amoral, and honestly I feel like both are missing the point. This song takes a true idea (that our present actions are shaped by what happened to us earlier in life), and blows it completely out of proportion to a ridiculously amoral place in a funny way because it is a Comedy Song. It's not meant to be taken at face value, and besides being funny serves as a set up to the choice Rebecca makes later in the episode by showing the unhealthy spiral taking the 'not guilty by reason of insanity' out would create.

It’s my same issue with people who try to criticize “Let it Go” for not being a healthy attitude. Yeah. Obviously. In the perspective of the singer, who’s being primed for character development, she thinks in the face of societal outrage for a way out of the acute mental stress, no matter how illogical that thread is. CXG is just pointing that out with satire.
@JBC3524 жыл бұрын
I find I relate to both because in stress I’ve found myself thinking these kinds of illogical thoughts, after an emotional episode of Criminal Minds, or when reflecting on times I kept trying when I should’ve let it go.
@vixxcelacea27784 жыл бұрын
The issue is that even if it isn't anyones fault, that's not a reason to excuse the behavior. It's a reason to help someone with that trauma. I don't think free-will exists either and we are products of cause and effect, BUT, that doesn't mean you let scorpions sting you or others. What it does do is help realize that there is no good or evil and that messed up people who don't understand that they are messed up do messed up things and even those who do can do messed up things. What we should have is a system that focuses on rehabilitation, not punishment, because punishment only makes people worse. Rebecca should probably go to jail, but jail should be a focus on her having to face her mental health instability in a controlled way. Something that isn't as stupid and damaging as either typical jail nor a psych ward because neither helps. The goal would be to treat her humanely and get her as a functional caring stable individual, as should any mentally ill person be treated and have as the ultimate goal. So no, it's not anyones fault, but you don't just let bad things happen. You take charge, protect yourself and those you love along with doing the most humane thing possible to help the damaged ones causing damage. We don't have a system that does this at all. We have a system that focuses on revenge and calls it justice.

This is one of my favorite songs from the series. First of all, I think it’s in 6/8, which is a refreshing change. The harmonies and blend, with, of course, the requisite key change, are stunning. And the hilarious “logical” build to everything being The Big Bang’s fault is great writing. But also, Scott Michael Foster was really sick with a head cold or flu the day they filmed this. The energy just wasn’t there, so Rachel asked that they rerecord just the audio when he was better. It was much harder syncing the new singing to the already filmed visuals (the opposite of how scenes are usually shot), and it took hours. He credits Rachel, however, with getting more humor out of the piece, specifically telling how she showed him how to milk the “No!” line to be funnier. Way to go, Rachel Bloom!

tbh this entire season i was really worried where nathaniel and rebecca were going because Nathaniel was suddenly "fixed" and it seemed like the show was moving the direction of the two getting together so rebecca could be happy while trying to avoid their relationship being rebecca's magical "im fixed" moment but... this song proved that's not at all what they're doing. Nathaniel isn't better, his reasons for getting better are fucked up and he has a lot of personal growth to go through himself before either of them can have anything healthy. Great ending to the season. It shows real character development on Rebecca's behalf. With this song it was easy to think that Rebecca would just fall back into her old destructive habits and mindset and get off with little to no lasting consequences. This is one of the reasons why I love this show, while sometimes it is funny seeing the things Rebecca gets upto when she goes off the rails (I loved the scenes when she was stalking Josh!), you can only mine that type of comedy ore for so long and end up "jumping the white shark", and given that as viewers we are emotionally invested in Rebecca as a character it is good to see her develop, even though at times it is painful, which mirrors real life in that development as a person can be very painful at times. I hope there is a season 4 and I look forward to it!

I was kind of surprised Nathaniel was suggesting an insanity plea; as a lawyer both he and Rebecca should know they are (1) not usually successful, (2) not magical get-out-of-jail-free cards, and (3) if successful, might result in indefinite mandatory commitment (something I'm sure neither wants). I'm glad they skipped that cliche, because if it had actually been the story arc, not only would Rebecca have no growth, but it would have been lazy writing for a show that usually doesn't shy away from deconstructing tropes to show real-world consequences.
@albertomatheusalcantarabel57286 жыл бұрын
The show trades material realism in order to explore psychological realism. That’s why an entire room of lawyers in a conference suddenly became more preoccupied with Rebecca’s text than their jobs.
@Writetheworldaway5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of that too lol. Also that the amount of time she was held after a suicide attempt seemed really short like as soon as she was physically healed she got to go home and she wasn’t held longer. You could attribute both those things to artistic liscense but tbh it seems like there’s a general effort to portray mental health systems accurately so I’m guessing it wasn’t adequately researched (esp the insanity plea thing)

The police should be able to access deleted Instagram stories, someone at my local high school got busted for a deleted Snapchat story. There's also Trent's garage of evidence of him stalking Rebecca, as well as text and email history. And Maya, Tim, and Jim all saw Trent holding the knife to Nathaniel's head. I really don't think that going to jail is a good way for Rebecca to take responsibility for her actions, considering she was acting of self defense here, and most of her other actions were scummy but not arrest-worthy
@IrishGiraffe6 жыл бұрын
Troy Lafond her past actions are definitely bad enough for her to get arrested. I think that’s what she meant by she’s guilty not of hurting Trent cause screw that guy but for all the other stuff
@Hermititis6 жыл бұрын
GEORGE, not Jim. :) He could have cleared out his storage container when he left West Covina. Or at least, just cleared out the wall and the creepy stuff; the rest he could explain as harmless mementos of past relationships. Trent is supposed to be an IT expert at his job, so he may have had some way to cover his tracks. Also, how likely are the police to spend time, resourcesand tax payer money to pursue a supoena or warrent to find deleted private Instagram posts when (a) they might not especially believe her and (b) she already entered her guilty plea? And considering Maya, Tim and George were the ones that brought up all the issues with her argument ("he was a turkey carver", "he's stalking you by going to a party you weren't invited to?" , etc), they may have a different interpretation of Trent holding the knife over Nathaniel (if they even saw that much; they arrived after Rebecca and may have noticed the knife after Trent was pushed - at which point it was not held near Nathaniel).
@troy74146 жыл бұрын
Hermititis 1. I'm talking courses of actions they should have taken before pleading guilty 2. A supoena doesn't exactly take a ton of resources, someone in my town posted something really dumb on his Snapchat story at like 11 at night once and deleted it, and the police had it very early the next morning. 3. The police may not believe her, but they did supposedly at least look at his Instagram, so they're likely to at least listen 4. If they get the Instagram story showing the motive/threat and the knife with Trent's DNA, then all the 3 witnesses need to be able to do is verify that the scene of the crime was Rebecca pushing Trent, Trent having the knife then, and Nathaniel's presence. The Instagram stories would show the threat, the knife would show the weapon, the witnesses would show the scene. Boom bang case closed 5. I thought it was Jim who ran up with Tim and Maya when she pushed Trent but then George when she was being arrested. Might be wrong, I was more than a little shocked then and may not have been paying attention

It's not that they can't do it; but it's not that easy to jump from one field to another*. He'd likely do better to use his copious funds to hire her the best lawyer he can afford. *Kind of like when Rebecca was asked represented Darryl in his custody case; at first she realistically point out that family law wasn't her expertise.

Rebecca's whole life isn't healthy that's the whole point of the show and what?? Still ship?? how can you say its unhealthy and then SHIP them??? Sorry but your comment just makes me annoyed also this song is a joke it wouldn't be funny if they were singing about healthy mindsets it would just be a top 40 music video this whole show is sarcastic i hope you realized that over time because that's what makes this show so enjoyable : knowing that it's satire ugh anyways

@@1800betterinblack Shipping a couple can mean you love their STORY but not necessarily their relations--which has to have drama and unhealthy actions in it for the sake of the narrative. Shipping a couple like this means that you hope they will find a way to be healthy and happy and together. Don't see what's so wrong with it.

I can't take it anymore!! Rachel! How?? How can you create such a freakingly brilliant show like this. This season's final episode is like the roller-coaster! Paula's gross song, Daryl and white Josh, the confession of Rebecca about her feeling toward Nathaniel and her courage at the end. It's too much! Please, we need to see the fight of Rebecca in season four! (And I really hope Trent will get what he deserve after everything he's done that nobody asked for)

I know the message is wrong but it’s so catchy. It’s a nice sweet and amoral song lol

This is a great example of how in comedy you say basically anything IF you put it in the right context.

I loved this. They take kind of true things and just run away with them and go way overboard. Kind of like the Without Love song. Perfect and hilarious. I can't wait for season 4!!!!! Also yayyy finally they are together!

This wasn't really healthy but its fine. The main point I got from it is that we should have empathy for each other and try to understand other POVs. Still hope they can find a way to have a healthy relationship not based on their toxic pasts.

I got "If I never knew you" from pocahontas vibes from this, even if it's not really the inspiration.

Loved the show... it is an outstanding project.. wow!! It takes a great knowledge and cleverness to write such a meaningful show. Hope to see you in UK for some shows!

Nathaniel is wearing blue!! Most bad decisions in the show are colour coded with blue, and well this song xd (Rebecca almost wears blue, she was not completly on board first, so even that adds up!)

This is literally every romantic Broadway love song all wrapped up into one and I'm SO HERE FOR IT. (Can't pin my finger on which song exactly, though, and it kills me.) (The ending is a bit like The Next Ten Minutes? But not quite. Definitely some Jason Robert Brown vibes here.)

This was such a powerful... bizarre finale. I loved this season, and I'm sad it's over. Can't get enough of Rebecca's antics.
