I am still working on my novel on an oral history of climate change. The thing is it isn’t even a worst case scenario. Global temps rise by at least 3 degrees. Large chunks of southern europe are uninhabitable; all rainforests collapse/ Central Americans and people from the Caribbean become refugees in the US. Middle East and North Africa becomes inhabitable. Asia basically is shit. The glaciers are melted. Nukes are used over the Himalayan glaciers and Siberian water supplies. Southeast Asia is at perpetual war between China and India over its water. Australia is shooting refugee life boats. And the US had basically turned to left wing politics with the eco socialists and eco nationalists being mainstream ideology. The government basically took over the economy.

and who is saying it won't? for solar started off as a heinously expensive novelty around 120 years ago, then in the 1950s spaceflight was becoming a thing and solar power is one of the only ways that you can generate power in space, so NASA developed the tech further and it got significantly cheaper (but still VERY expensive) and a good bit more effective, after NASA got their budget slashed post Apollo they heavily slowed down (but didn't fully stop) developing them, then in the 1980s and 90s they finally got cheap enough for the upper class to afford so the private sector started developing them and large scale production finally made the costs plummet, by the late 2000s solar panels had gotten to the point where they were affordable (if a fairly big investment) to most of the middle class and now in 2024 they are nearly as cheap as other energy sources like coal or natural gas.

I ain't all that concerned about the chinese because the US military could steamroll them in a week if we wanted to... the US is working on rocket mobile infantry (yeah, look up project SUSTaIN) and already has a mach 6 stealth attack drone (the SR-72 darkstar) and has a larger military in every way besides manpower and even then its only barely and they have 5 times the population... the US air force has more 5th gen stealth aircraft alone that the entire rest of the world combined has combat aircraft of all types and generations... US logistics are so good we can steal a full blown hind (well the export version anyway) from a tiny airstrip hundreds of miles into the desert and have it on US soil in less than 36 hours...
