The absolute commitment to a language-free UI is really amazing. By all logic there's way too many features for it to be a "good" UX decision but it's still completely functional and becomes a little work of art in itself. The way it lets you reveal features over the course of the video is especially clever.

I found your "Screens in Screens in Screens" video and was massively confused. Went and started binging the series to understand and while I didn't get it, I was interested. This. This is where it all starts coming together. My jaw was on the floor the second you started making wood. I know this video is a year old, but you're doing an awesome job. Can't wait to catch up and see what else you have in store, as well as what the screens vid was getting at (I have an idea after the cells video and this, but I'm definitely more than intrigued now).

Something never mentioned was + enables loop-around and - disables it. Also the numbers 1-6 change how many iterations of creating the world there are. Also diamonds were removed :(
@vindi167
@vindi167 Жыл бұрын
also DO NOT press anything 7-9 or the number 0 because that just makes you unable to do anything. Edit: to fix it, press a number from 1-6 again, and this is because, when it's generating the world, you cant do anything. but there is a limited amount of iterations, so if you set it to more, it waits until the 7th or higher iteration which never happens, so it continues waiting for it to finish until it generates, so you cant do anything. and for 0-5, you cant do anything because the world isn't done generating. Edit 2: You can do stuff with 1-5, just the world generates kinda randomly, so you will have different sized pixels.

There’s a few different things I’d want to see made or make myself with these kinds of systems. Pretty patterns, ecosystems or societies with little plants and creatures and/or people, and then large machines, spaceships, or animals. The first most interesting thing would be some sort of animal that builds a simple structure, like maybe it just builds a mound or a hole. Then you could start making them cooperate. And then perhaps have different materials or shapes involved. At some point, it would be cool if an animal made of many parts could replicate itself.

I love this. The format for specifying the rules and relationships between materials is simple yet extremely versatile, enough that I'm pretty sure this is Turing complete. After all, couldn't you make WireWorld with this, and thereby implement binary logic contraptions... Including the WireWorld computer i saw with a fully functioning ALU? side question: is your voiceover just being modulated from your natural voice, or is that a completely computer generated voiceover? It definitely doesn't sound quite natural, but I can't tell if it's just slowed down slightly and reverbed or if there's more to it
@Twisted_Code
@Twisted_Code Жыл бұрын
So can rules operate on more than just the 8 cells adjacent to a given cell, or would you need "intermediate" elements to convey information from further out?
@TodePond
@TodePond Жыл бұрын
hey thanks, glad you like it! yes - this is turing complete. it's a non-deterministic cellular automata (CA) and there's a paper out there somewhere proving that deterministic CAs can be simulated in non-deterministic ones. in practice, it would be really hard though, because a lot of work would be needed to handle the 'synchronisation' of something like wireworld. (CellPond is asynchronous). it would probably run very slowly. but it's possible! this kind of architecture is based on Dave Ackley's moveable feast machine btw - you should check it out. the 'event window' of cellpond is arbitrary - it's not fixed. it can be as big or as small as you want. also it is my voice! i put a bunch of effects on it though for a certain aesthetic. I also use a crappy microphone and speak really slowly and quietly. (i have a better mic but i prefer the crappy one's vibe). I'm going for that classic 'asmr low-fi coding tutorial vibe'. i keep learning more about audio though and you can probably notice how it changes a lot from vid to vid!
@Twisted_Code
@Twisted_Code Жыл бұрын
@@TodePond Oh, I hadn't considered the matter of determinism. Mostly because my understanding of determinism and synchronization is a bit limited. Can you elaborate on that? I don't do a lot with CAs and wasn't even aware there was such a thing as a nondeterministic CA. And I definitely didn't read any whitepapers on determinism in... anything, really. I sort of just assumed (bad idea!) it was synchronized and processed each rule before moving onto the next generation. I'm not sure why that would run slower, at least not by much, as long as all the workers finish around the same time. Mind you, again, my understanding of synchronization is limited to what I've learned from debugging Minecraft servers so...
@TodePond
@TodePond Жыл бұрын
@@Twisted_Code yes sure! most CAs out there *are* deterministic, so that's understandable! most CAs work like this: All of the cells are updated at the exact same time, based on the state of the world on the previous frame. But in asynchronous ones... One cell is updated a time, in a random place, based on its surroundings. There's a sliding scale of this! Some are somewhere in the middle. When I worked on sandspiel, I made some notes on 'update order', which is related to this: docs.google.com/document/d/1nkje_6OG2v7aoM6KvcKoKqr4xzHZMczKRtr3NP9-dSU/edit?usp=sharing I indirectly did a video on how the update order works in CellPond and SandPond in the 'Rabbits' video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWirg5SvbreDhMk Another project that uses non-determinism in a similar fun way is markovjunior: github.com/mxgmn/MarkovJunior Simulating wireworld in cellpond would be slow not because it's more complicated or anything, just because... first of all, you'd need to simulate a different kind of computer. That's the slow bit. After that, wireworld would be simple. You can make stuff that's *similar* to Wireworld much easier, but it would involve some randomness. Hope that helps! and I hope it gives you some fun things to explore :) let me know if you have any more questions!

eventually sideways triangles will do the channel swapping job. you can't make this exact reed currently, you'll have to make the seed a different colour (or something like that). for the hexagon, it's a puzzle for you to figure out (watch the Spellular Automata video for clues)

I’d say that we really do gotta start again and make something new, and it’s just got to be really cool. Generative art I think is going to be the next big thing, and people will probably be doing live coding instead of playing instruments to perform. And this artificial life stuff probably has the most seductive potential. And don’t worry about having 7000 lines of untested code, tests are a hindrance to the artistic process

its interesting that when you combine rules at the beguinging you have also put in a sneaky check to check what its falling into (sand falling into water pushes the water up instead of making air) this would presumably fall apart if i wanted the inverse (sand making water in the air and making air in the water) just a little asumtion thats clever but puts restrictions on the rules you didnt clarify

Hey this an important feature of the language, and something it does automatically :) It implicitly tries to use the cells that already exist in the world if it can. ie: It prefers to "move" cells rather than "recolour" cells. This feels right most of the time, but you can override the behaviour by using the stamp tool. By stamping a square, you can indicate which cells should or shouldn't persist from place to place. There are some fun simple ways of exploring this more that I didn't get to in this video, but I showed in the Spellular Automata one (like the first rainbow element). And I also showed it in the two talks I did about CellPond (which you can find in the Talks playlist on my channel)

shift+scroll to change the amount of what you place i spent a crazy amount of time being confused as to how he changed the cursor size, then noticed the two scroll controls said on github (alt scroll and ctrl scroll) don't have shift, so i tested that and found that that's what the control was the controls in this thing are hard because they are not documented

@@TodePond I think I understood basically at 6:56 the last rule is not working the intended way - instead of creating proper stem cells on both layers, something else happens - not entirely sure what - I guess the lower cell is considered as the same as the previous lower cell, while the upper is treated as a new cell type that the rules do not apply to? Then with stamping you declare that both generated cells come from the same source cell on the left - so that subtract 1 from green actually works and both generated cells have the stem-cell rules apply to them. It does raise more questions though 1) what is the lower triangle thing? 2) do you need to stamp every time you use the color variation feature? 3) what to do for more complicated rules where 1 or 2 stamps are not enough?
