We’re hard at work on the next mystery, but in the meantime, a bonus: I recently watched the Netflix mystery show SAFE. I absolutely loved it, can’t recommend it enough. But I have a bone to pick with the ending.

This is a bonus episode-an examination of the humble mystery in pop culture. For all us mystery lovers, it ain’t the real, bonafide thing. But it can be just as exciting.
This is not only the sixth video on this channel, but the sixth video I’ve ever made, period. I’m still learning, and I hope to improve as the channel goes on.
And for the record: Harlan Coben is an incredible writer, who could write CIRCLES around me any day. I’m not even a critic. Just a fan with a few pesky thoughts.
What did you think of SAFE? Let me know below, and thank you so much for watching!

@@bruh_hahaha Another great one with some familial drama is Netflix's Ozark. I also loved Bodyguard, which is on US Netflix anyway, another short but amazing series. Unfortunately, at least for my money, HBO is making the best version of these shows right now. True Detective S1, Sharp Objects, and now the current The Outsider! Another one that scratches the Harlan Coben itch is The Sinner -- excellent first season! It was made by USA but is on Netflix in the US.

I think she said she’d confess as a sort of reverse psychology; she said it so jenny and tom would think she’s a good person so that they would later tell her that she shouldn’t confess as the fire was years ago

To be honest, this isn’t a good ending. I liked the original ending: one of the key things here was, Sophie was thinking of her child and Chris was blackmailing her. She drowned Chris for the sake of her family, particularly her sick son. It wasn’t planned. But the way she walked around like she didn’t kill someone, even pleaded with Tom for her sake, is emotional manipulation. This isn’t someone who feels genuine guilt. This is someone wanting to preserve her little bubble. You could argue that she offers to come clean specifically because she knows Tom would refuse. When he sees her, he thinks of what would’ve happened if Jenny had been the one confronting her. Can you say with certainty that she wouldn’t have done to Jenny what she did to Chris in the same situation? In addition to that, this whole thing began as a result of buried secrets. I actually like that he did the right thing and turned her over. Did his duty as a servant of the law rather than turn away for the sake of his personal sentiments. Even if Josh has done it, the stigma of murder would’ve hung over her head(Jenny would never forget it). There would never be a version of this where they would be happy. Her last, desperate pleadings were those of a cornered woman seeking to get out at any cost. If he'd shown her mercy, there’s no guarantee that he or his daughter would be Safe over a long enough period of time.

I figured out it was her from episode 7. Once you learn about the fire you realize there's only one person out of the five who could be there Plus it makes complete sense that she didn't tell Tom about the fire that way. If she did, then Tom goes to Helen and he finds Jenny within a day. Then it would be easy for them to piece together the truth about Chris

I did love it! All of it, even the ending. The way I can see Sophie doing what she did was that if Chris had not been so belligerent, Sophie probably would never have gotten mad enough to kill him. But I did like your idea for the ending. Only problem with it I see is that we would have been robbed of the gorgeously acted scenes between Michael C Hall and Amanda Abbington at the end. I don’t like the idea of Sophie die a martyr. EVERYONE was lying about something throughout the show, about something benign or down right evil. Sophie got the ending her character deserved. Like Chris said she is a hypocrite and it was eating at him. And if she died in the final altercation it would just be too convenient. The ending hit me hard because it was a real sick twist, but it was already clear that people’s lives fell apart because of their lies. And that lie deserves to be finally brought to justice in the form of an arrest and sentencing.

I think your ending is sweet but a lil boring, no offence. This isn't Hollywood happy ever after. I think the ending doesn't need to be changed a bit! it's a spectacular twist that shows that "People you know can be surprising". And the fact that she ends up in Jail but not dead is exactly what she deserves: She committed 2 atrocious crimes and the shame and suffering that comes from going to Prison is a fair price to pay rather than instant death, especially since she's a cop, supposed to protect people rather than kill them. And she was just bluffing when she said she was going to confess the school fire. The only thing that makes little sense to none is Jenny and Chris wanting to tell Bobby and everyone else that they knew about the school fire, how can you be that stupid and naive. Of course things weren't to go well from that point, lol
