Oh, this is so sweet. I admire Eliot's desire to learn how to do this himself and his enthusiasm in not throwing his jeans away just because they have a rip or such. Especially in their line of work when jeans will be put to the test - who wants to spend money to buy new all the time?? Eliot reminds me so much of Ian. Time well spent between mother, son and daughter-in-law. ❤

Oh my goodness, your son has quite the sense of humor 😅 I love it. But, he was watching and had a great idea with the free arm. I hand sewn quite a few holes, and patched the others with the one pair of jeans that couldn't be salvaged. He's right though. We need to start fixing our clothes, especially if no one is going to see them except other workmen who have holes in their britches because they don't have Moms like us Jean.😊❤

@susanmei99802 күн бұрын
You know, I think you’re right! They had that brand of sewing machine when I was in home ec class (several decades, or more, ago 😝) and I distinctly recall that it had a locking reverse button! When I went sewing machine shopping for my first machine, as an adult, I went to a shop that sold that kind of machine, and told her I wanted the machine with a locking reverse button (because sometimes when you’re reversing you need both hands for whatever you’re trying to do) and she kept telling me that I was crazy; that, that company had never made a machine with a locking reverse button! And I insisted, yes, they did! Because they were brand new machines when, I was using them, and the teacher assigned me to use one of the several new machines, because the other students didn’t know how to use them properly; but I already had experience sewing. That wasn’t the only time I had an encounter with a know it all sewing machine sales person, who didn’t actually know what they were talking about! If this is that same model, or a similar one, that’s probably what’s wrong. 😂 (ok, it was the late 1970’s model.) 😁

Oh no, you too! My daughter's fiance saw me sewing, he and my daughter helped themselves to Christmas gifts! Then, I get two large kitchen garbage bags of jeans that needed mending. I looked inside and realized that he had tried fixing them himself with E-6000 glue! Nothing I could do for them. I showed him how and what I could fix, and with little to know marks, and without 3 inches of glue! Now, I have a bag full of hoodies and socks and underwear. It has to be serious if he's letting me fix his underwear 😅. I told him the best way to fix his socks was to clip his toenails regularly, not after they drill a hole in his socks. I got a sheepish "yes ma'am". After that, I have a ball gown to tailor for my daughter. She and her fiance are going to a ball. 😊 Romantic isn't he? 😊❤ But I have miles of gown to him, and the toiling, and a little bit of a dart in the bodice, just to make sure she doesn't have a wardrobe malfunction.

Enjoyed this time with Eliot so much....made me smile. (1) Please tell Eliot he can purchase a pkg of iron-on denim patches in sewing department at Walmart. Cut a piece slightly larger than hole, place inside pant and iron per directions. Should keep patches on hand for emergency patching. (2) Blue Sharpie pens come in other shades - navy would be good for jeans. I agree with Eliot that jeans are not as sturdy as they used to be....I don't carry anything but small phone and I too have to patch. I also have a small spool of denim thread and hand sew a lot of holes closed. Thank you for sharing this time with your son....he was fun to watch and listen to.

When I was married, my hubs was in construction and needed his jeans mended constantly! Same places, crotch; around the pockets, etc. Sometimes, the fabric was so thin, it was pointless to try to patch it because the base fabric would just continue ripping. And I’d be like, it’s time for new pants! But he didn’t like“new“ clothes because they weren’t soft and broken in already ! So, here’s an idea for Eliot: I saw this pouch on Pinterest that you can make to hold your phone, and you can either make loops to run your belt through, or if he doesn’t wear a belt, you can put little lobster clasps on two tabs that you can attach to two button loops on your jeans. Then, if he uses that to put his phone in, he won’t keep ripping his pockets. If the same thing happens with his wallet, then maybe he could just make a little work pouch with three pockets and attach it in a similar way. One pocket for his phone; one pocket for his wallet; and one pocket for whatever tool he wants to jam into the spare. That way you can make the pockets roomy on that, and they won’t rip out like the pockets rip off the jeans. And then his jeans won’t wear out. He can make it out of what’s left of his old jeans, and maybe he could make a fortune selling them to the other guys at work! Someplace, I have a picture that I saved of it, on one of my devices, because I thought it was so cool! But I never did make it yet.😂

My daughter's fiance is in construction. Every pair of his jeans have holes in the crotch area from squatting down while working. The other place is in the front near the pocket. Car keys or fobs for different buildings? Same places on every pair. So, yes, construction is hard on his jeans. They're the nice heavy duty jeans, meant to take a beating. But, like most guys, they refuse to part with their clothing! Just buy a new pair after the second time in the sewing hospital. 😊❤ Love ya, but sometimes there's nothing to attach the patch to.

Barb wire fence and fence panels are my family’s nemesis for their jeans. I took a stack of jeans with me to seam rip while my youngest daughter was at basketball practice and the coach couldn’t understand why I was going to patch them. She thought I should leave them. Holes in jeans are not good when it’s below 40 degrees outside or when you have to get in the module builder and clean out the cotton stripper basket. When the holes in jeans became popular, I couldn’t imagine paying that much money when in six months they would probably have a rip on their own!😂
