Great wash ideas. The way to separate 5 gallon buckets: get them hot in sun, spray cold water on inner bucket, it shrinks and slides right out 4:56

At the farm where I work we use bathtubs for washing both greens and roots. They are obviously not installed as regular bathtubs as they're at waist height. (And they've never been used for their original intended purpose, ofc!) They work fantastically well for greens - you can just fill the tub, dump a whole bin full at once, and get it done very quickly. We have three tubs so if you need multiple washes you just move down the line toward the spinner. It's great for sorting out the bugs, bad leaves, etc. because more surface area and a white background makes them really easy to see and remove, especially if you have good lighting installed over the wash area (I've worked without and that was abysmal). For roots it keeps most of the splashing contained and the water just runs down the drain (pvc pipes carry the water well away from the wash/pack area). And the tubs are easy to clean!

I may do a follow up to this video about storage that I can include something about that. You mean for market, though? It's a slow process no matter what--just got to tear the first layer of wrap off and pull it down over the bulb. Then we clip the roots and that's about it!

We set up a seedling tunnel / hoophouse as a makeshift wash pack which was actually a nice improvement over our unheated washpack on frosty November days. Not so much June though…

I still (2 years later) am floored about the pedal powered root washer idea. Because of you I really never had to wash roots any other way. We have ours setup with an adjustable rail system (like what you would find industrial electrical equipment mounted to). Definitely have yet to figure out a great way to move that large quantity of used water away from the table but hey, constantly improving is good right?

Been reading through The New Organic Grower by Eliot Coleman as my wife and I have been considering starting a small 1/4 acre market garden. This video has definitely confirmed that we are no where near ready to start a market garden. I had already been considering spending the next 2 years growing green manure to have the field ready for crops in a few years so definitely going to begin researching all the additional infrastructure that you so plainly and helpfully lay out in this video. Thanks for all you do and spending the time to nerd out with out with us about the finer details that newbies like my wife and I didn't even think to consider. Hi! Great video! Little side note: if the white tape I see in your washing station's plumbing is plumber's tape, you should know it is called Teflon tape here in the Netherlands. It contains a lot of PFAS, aka forever chemicals. I try to get rid of/boycot all that is connected to those chemicals and I know you don't like them either so I just wanted to mention it. @@pennylund7626 Some pipe dopes are safe and do the same thing. Also, there are still packages flax or hemp fibers that you coat in a safe wax-like supstance that have been used for these jobs for a long time, that is what I use nowadays. Works perfectly and is non-toxic.

I think in Europe they use some kind of wool or other hair as an alternative to Teflon tape. I recall Martijn Doolard using it on his channel, (2nd best channel on KZbin ; )

Thanks, I only have a small garden with one raised bed. A dozen potato buckets I'm cycling (first early/second early/main crop) so I shouldn't have to buy any or at least much less. I wonder how hard it would be to add a conveyor belt like at a supermarket checkout beside your workspace? It would need engineering to have all electronic components protected and well away from where you're spraying water everywhere, but you could stack the whole conveyor belt with vegetables and then wash them in a much bigger batch than what you can with just a stationary shelf.

So my little Wash Vagas.... hehehe, I'm building a foot operated wash station like yours and it took me a long long time to realize that you weren't using a pressure washer head (face palm)! I found a 3/8" 25 deg 3.0 gpm nozzle online. I've got my... Wash Vegas station going but my foot petal is junk outta the box, opens but doesn't close so that's gotta get replaced. Love the design. After your first video on it I T-ed off the PEX and ran a garden hose spiket to the front right leg of the table to fill 5 gallon buckets and to fill totes of dirty carrots to soak. Such a time saver!!! Thank you for that original video!!

Nice video great info!. Here's what I do with my chickens, let em go! They will be so happy and so much healthier. As far as the Hawks go, I just put up a big plastic great horned owl, and I move it around from time to time we've lost very little chickens to Hawks. Maybe that'll work for you not sure but good luck with everything you guys are great!

Drill a 1/16 hole in the base of the bottom, or top, bucket and weld the hole with a soldering iron or the tip of a glue gun once separated. Otherwise, make a YT video challenging people to pull them apart.

@@becomingfitdaddy7669 The reason for using such a small bit to drill the hole. Nothing unsanitary about it as long as you are not adding external filler to the hole. Otherwise, get a dead-blow/plastic hammer and hit the bottom bucket on the bottom. The shock will do two things; it will break the hydrostatic seal or it will break the base of the bottom bucket. Hope this helps!

Those are all good questions. For us, it started with a CSA which started largely with family and then moved to word of mouth (I do not recommend starting with a CSA but that's for a different video). Then when we started at the farmers market, being certified organic opened up a HUGE customer base. As for chefs, taking samples to restaurants and being super consistent is the key. We do grow some cucumbers but it's not a big crop for us. We harvest them early and put them in plastic bags that we can wash and re-use. You don't want them to be too exposed to air and you need them to be dry as well. Then into the cooler!

Yes we do! I kind of plan to do a crop storage video at a later date because I just ran out of time here, but basically just convert that cooler to an overwinter cooler with the thermostat you see at the end of the video (after credits)

Oh not necessarily. Bleach/chlorine products are very effective for sanitizing surfaces. Some people avoid bleach because sodium hypochlorite is a harsh chemical so wanted to offer an alternative.
