Wow, great time travel! I remember the Conrail job up into Niles in late-'80s. Usually a GP-15 when I saw it. This video sure takes me back to those days! Thanks for posting;-)

I worked in Roseland in 1988 and that SW1500 had derailed behind the campus right before the powerhouse. They had a highway crane over there to rerail it. I guess it was off the tracks bad enough they couldn't frog it back on.

I can barely remember when this line was pulled by steam. I also remember when Western Ave. had a track running down it's middle. Steam loco would pull several cars downtown. There was a large wholesale produce warehouse at end of street. These memories are circa 1953-6. They discontinued this service because traffic was getting too heavy on Western.

I really enjoyed this footage and your narration and information about it. I did not realize this operation existed into the 90s.

Very Interesting. I had a late uncle that worked for St. Mary's in the maintenance department back in the 70's-80's, I believe I recall that he was involved in helping to unload coal from the rail cars and lost a leg while working there (not sure if he lost it due to the unloading of the coal).

They didn't want a noisy, grimy train around their pristine campuses. That's what elitism will do.

I remember one of the reasons against was coal dust a health hazard. 14 hoppers a week going 10mph. really. But yet not a problem for decades prior.

I remember the city residents voted down, because of the fear of excessive greenhouse gas emissions.
