Honestly if not for the helmet it might have been more workable (maybe with a tights adjustment too). There's a threshold for these things and while the suspenders would have gotten a side-eye by themselves it wouldn't have crossed it I think. The helmet with it though? Goes from "okay gladiator theme." to "WHY DID THEY MAKE HIM COSPLAY A GLADIATOR?!?"

Vince never could stand to see someone from another company get over - even NXT! Kross was super over in NXT. It would have been so easy to just let him do the same character. I'm pretty sure Kross's main roster gimmick was that he was part of some sex cult. I see the storyline being that after NXT, he and Scarlet broke up. This put him in a deep depression, and he was found and manipulated by this cult. This was the reason for the gimpy costume, and for the lack of Scarlet. Things go from bad to worse, as this cult is too much, even for Vince McMahon, who has to let Kross go. Somewhere in this time frame, Scarlet finds Kross, down on his luck, and manages to save him from the sex cult, and they get back together.

Long reply;This may be hard to believe, but Vince was just trying to help him out. The guy was already wearing a Gladiator skirt in his NXT matches. If you as a casual fan had never seen him before it would be very confusing. The helmet made sense in that aspect. Also, he’s no Brad Pitt. His face probably turned Vince off like Christian’s did. Lastly, his NXT run was great, but everyone he beat has proven to be a jobber. Gargano, Ciampa, even with Triple H in charge nobody cares about them.
