Notte della Taranta is a festival celebrating the Pizzica Salentina a traditional folk dance from Salento, the heel of Italy in the South of Puglia region. There a several kind of variation of the dance, the Pizzica de Core (i.e. of the Heart) is when.a men is couting a woman and she makes use of the red scarf to "react" to his attention, It's a beautiful addition to the dance typical moves where man and woman get closer and than back never touching..Another variation is Pizzica Tarantata and that's the connection with the big spider you saw on stage next to Angelina. In fact taranta means tarantula the poisonous spider still present in Salento nowadays, which used to bite the women under their clothes during the harvest. Following the bite women were falling in a "possessed" state so the pizzica tarantata was acting as therapy and the musicians along with people from the whole village was going to the woman's house to perform their "exorcism": while played incessantly the bitten woman would dance until exhaustion as it was believed it would make the spider dye and the poison be expelled. She would then brought to St. Paul church in Galatina to drink the holy water from the well and be blessed to complete her healing process. I suggest you to watch Stromae at LA NOTTE DELLA TARANTA 2022. Usually i prefer to introduce italian artists but in this case there is a union between him (Stromae) singing in french and the choir in Salento dialect! In other words: music unites peoples and cultures. CIAO from MILANO 🇮🇹 🐸

questo in Puglia👏🏼👏🏼invece in Abruzzo fanno "La Notte dei Serpenti” il direttore d'orchestra è Melozzi (dirige sempre anche al festival di Sanremo). Questo non è uno show, non è un evento, ma “è un rito collettivo per esorcizzare anche il male di oggi. Questa manifestazione musicale ha risvegliato l'orgoglio abruzzese 👍

I also recommend you listen to Calinitta from the Notte della Taranta 2022 edition. It is the song that traditionally closes the concert every year, and is sung by all the guests. In the 2022 editions, the conductor Dardust made an arrangement with samples of the Prodigy, Daft Punk and Chemical Brothers

The red foulard represents the love of the women and the male dancers try to conquer it. The pizzica is a seduction game dance :)

Traditionally from Puglia and Italy but the connection with the rest of the mediterranean countries is obvious - no wonders guys like yourself from Turkey and all the way round to Spain seems to have a genuine feel for the Pizzica.
