What do you think? Is Djokovic the greatest of all time? -Jason Frausto

undisputable. let's not forget he was robbed 4 GS opportunities: WO 2020, USO 2020, AO 2022, USO 2022. It's arguable that given same situation, Federer wouldn't have been disqualified from USO 2020. Among WO 2020, AO 2022, USO 2022, he should have won half of them, that 1.5. WO 2022 gives no ATP points and he lost a few weeks being no. 1, that's another lose. he should have more than 400 weeks being #1 by the end of his career.

I don't think so. Primarily because I could never really get on board with using stats to justify the title. Not to mention, the title is silly. If there is such a thing, only God knows. My understanding is that greatness can't be measured. It can not be contained by stats, numbers, and all that. To do so is like an insult to the word. Greatness transcends. I think the best way to describe it is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That's the thing a lot of people don't understand. One other significant part about greatness is inspiration and how it draws people in. Is everyone moved by raw numbers? That already sounds boring. Watching a match, especially of epic proportions? Watching them really battle it out? Tensions? Pulling off stunts? That's really moving. That's lifting. That is more likely to draw people into the game. Maybe even start. Maybe get them to change their lives for the better. Overall, greatness can not be determined by numbers. It can't even be contained by numbers. You try something like that, and you'd strip away the meaning. There are other things I can describe Djokovic as that would be much more precise. He is the most versatile player I've ever seen at big tournaments. The most even player in terms of defense and offense capabilities and effectiveness. The most consistent player for sure. That's all I can come up with for now.

The debate has been done and dusted for quite a few years now... I dont get why Djokovic had to win SO MUCH MORE than the other 2 for the world to finally accept it... like wtf... he doesnt just have more weeks at No1... he has almost 100 weeks more than the guy in second place. He doesnt just have 39 Masters 1000 titles he is the only one to complete the set and not just once but TWICE. He has not just won most slams, he is the only to complete the set 3 times and the only one to hold all slams at once (non calendar). He has the H2H against his top opponents, he has the most ATP points in a single season (16,950!), he has the most top 10 wins and the best % record, he has the most finals/semifinals at GS events he has won1/3 of the total Slams he was allowed to compete in, having said that he should have even more slams himself and less his main rival (Rafa) due to covid, he has most year end no1 (7) going for his 8th this year, he has record equaling 6 ATP Finals and so much more... but the craziest one for me is the following: He has won 16 of his last 20 GS finals! The very definition of a winner... And he did all of that in a mere 12 years including covid... during tennis golden era, facing the best players ever, hostile crowds, biased media and even politics... How can it be that people had to wait for him to gather SO MUCH MORE than the rest to finally accept it??? He has been inevitably the GOAT for YEARS...

Imagine what the reaction would be if Federer had 24 GS, winning H2H against Djokovic,had spent a year and a half longer as no.1, and then Djokovic fans came along and said: Yes, but Djokovic is the GOAT? If a kid who will be born in 2025 is being asked in 2034 who is the GOAT, she will tell you it is Djokovic,based on results, not opinions. Politics kept Djokovic away from recent GS tournaments,and he had missed on opportunity to tie Roger' s records at Wimbledon ( title #8),and USO ( title #5). If No1vak did that,, there would be no reason to talk about tennis in the next 67 years, and if No1vak wins another RG title, that would make internet obsolete.

Great analysis. The only thing I believe you missed was Novak's mental toughness. He has won so many matches that came down to being better in the big moments, as well as fighting back from situations that looked really bleak. Djokovic is definitely the GOAT. His game neutralized Roger's and Nadal's long before he reached the 24 Grand Slams. What I mean is that, contrary to what Nadal says, Djokovic being the GOAT is not just a matter of numbers. He has pushed tennis to a level that nobody had seen before, and the only one now who could follow him at this level is probably Alcaraz. Even prime Roger and prime Rafa could not. Sometimes I watch old matches of Novak and I am impressed by the improvements he has brought to his game since his young years. And the most impressive thing is that he accomplished all this in the shadow of the other two, as himself was unfairly neglected by the media. That is probably where he found his strength, and that makes him unquestionably the best of all time, whatever the numbers may be. OK, the numbers speak for themselves too.

Yeah one could make an argument between Rafa and Nole based on numbers, but they don't remember those press conferences where Rafa basically said it's not even a rivalry anymore because Nole always won. He completely figured him out and took the crown. Their H2H is insanely balanced but the people who bring it up in debate fail to add context. Nadal absolutely owned Nole for a while but then Novak became Thanos in 2011 and literally showed him every corner of the field from then onwards. Still a great rivalry nonetheless, it's always about Federer vs Rafa, but Rafa vs Novak was better IMO.

Ljudi sa izuzetnim atletskim predispozicijama se ne bave tenisom. Teniseri na ulici izgledaju kao obični ljudi i po njihovom izgledu se teško može zaključiti da li se oni uopšte bave sportom. I’m a Federer fan but anyone who knows/plays tennis cannot dispute Djokovic is the GOAT. Mad respect and awe for the man. Ironically however he’s got the most haters which puzzles me. Players like him, he’s done a lot for the sport and gives through his charities. Why?
@talkingtaiwan
@talkingtaiwan 8 ай бұрын
The reason for the "haters" is that he used to say/do idiotic things as a young player between 2007-2010 (which has stuck through the years), and for his often demonstrative temper tantrums, i.e., 2020 Olympics vs. Buon Gusto, (after losing)and his mostly subtle yet sometimes overt arrogance after key wins. During his entire career, anytime Novak played against Roger or Rafa, 90-98% of the crowds favored them over Novak. In fact, the hostile crowds many times constantly tried to harass, taunt, and disrupt Novak during course of his matches against both Roger & Rafa. The draws have been fixed to favor Roger & Rafa over Novak. Here are the facts. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGe4gZRqoZmLpNU Rogers era of competition was far weaker then Novaks. Simply look at the facts. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5XTY32dptt7jLt9 10. Both Roger & Rafa have had to compete only against opponents on the other side of the net. Novak slammed the door on both Rogers and Rafas last chance to be considered the GOAT when he beat Roger at 2019 Wimbledon and Rafa at 2021 Rolland Garros. Everywhere he goes nowadays people support him more than his opponents, outside of the home opponent. And even then, there is a huge support for Novak, almost 50:50. His body of work in masters series events is also insane and deserves a lot of credit. Sometimes masters series events can be even more difficult to win than grand slams, with a string of matches against top 50 players and then the best in the world without rest days in-between. Not only has he won a record 39 of those tournaments, but he has won all of them at least twice. He is closer to winning all of them at least 3 times (with 1 more Monte-Carlo title required) than Nadal (missing Miami and Paris-Bercy) or Federer (missing Monte-Carlo and Rome) are / came to winning all of them at least once.

The question (for me) now is if Novak keeps going, before he retires can he achieve the same dominance (stats-wise) over his sport as Gretzky did in hockey.

If Djokovic were an American, they would declare him a deity. The most influential sports media are in the hands of the Western world and they promote their athletes. Djokovic would not be as popular as Federer and Nadal even if his tennis style and his personality were perfect. That is the only truth why Djokovic is not popular.

I'm a big Fed fan. When Pete Sampras held the GS record at 14 he was considered the G.OA.T. The man Federer was chasing for the title and when he surpassed him with (15) he was anointed as the G.O.A.T. with little opposition. Wind the clock forwards to Djokovic having 24 GS and holding just about every other significant tennis record not only can the media and many pundits not just simply say Djokovic is the G.O.A.T. without hesitation they are now trying to overshadow him and his remarkable achievements with Carlos Alcaraz whom he humbled in their first GS meeting at the FO. I consider myself a true tennis fan and as much as I have had my personal favourites over the years; Connors, Agassi and Federer... Djokovic is G.O.A.T. Ps: Alcaraz is a great player will he achieve what the big 3 did... If he manages to do the calendar GS then media will try to elevate him above Djokovic which will be difficult because they'd have to make Fed and Rafa's records inferior to Carlos that would kill them😅😅😅

As a long-time Roger fan, even I agree Novak has statistically passed almost all of Roger's career achievements and is the GOAT of tennis. That's now been put to bed. But I'm sorry I "took the bait" on this cheeky (yet ridiculous) "Greatest Sportman" debate, mostly for my own amusement. *The fact is, great athletes from different sports simply cannot be compared to one another; as each sport requires different challenges and attributes. The ONLY true OBJECTIVE way one can assess how different athletes can be compared in different sports is the DOMINATION TEST -- statistically which #1 athlete's career performance of all-time (on the most different levels) in their respective sport (the statistical "G.O.A.T") exceeded their closest #2 all-time runner-up by the widest margin.* If we go by this criteria (the "only" truly objective criteria for comparing athletes from different sports) , then it is universally accepted that the Most Dominant "Modern" Athlete (let's not count sports records in the early part of the 20th Century, when playing conditions and rules in some cases were vastly different) is - *Team Sports: Wayne Gretzky, Hockey 1978 - 1999 Career Stats: 894 Goals; 1963 assists; 2857 Total points* *Gretzky holds 61 NHL records, and leads in all-time career points to his closest competitor by a 49% margin.* *He was so DOMINANT over everyone else, that if he never scored one single goal in his entire career, he would STILL lead the next closest runner-up (Jaromir Jagr, 1921 total points) in career points! And this acknowledgement is demostrated that his No.99 jersey was RETIRED by EVERY team.* *Individual Sports: Alexander Karelin, Greco-Roman Wrestilng 1987 - 2000 Career Stats: 887 wins 2 Losses; 3 Olympic Gold Medals* Even more amazing, Karelin did not lose a match for 13 consecutive years - his only 2 losses coming in 1987 (his first match) and 2000 (his last match) and each time by only 1 point - *that's an 887 match winning streak!!* And the last 6 years (of his 13 year undefeated run) he did not give up a single point! *No individual dominated their sport like Karelin did - or likely ever will.* *Individual Sports (Special Mention): Michael Phelps, Swimming 2001 - 2016; 23 Gold Medals, 28 total Medals* Phelps holds 39 World records in swimming + 20 Guinness World Records, won 6, 8,4, and 5 Gold Medals over 4 consecutive Olympic Games (2004 - 2016) *Although he would swim in many World Championships during the season, the only reason I don't hold Phelps in the same highest category as the prior two, is that Phelps greatest performances (his "Grand Slams") only happened every 4 years during the Olympics. Still 23 Gold Medals over 4 Olympic Games is insane!* "Intangibles" of athletes in sport such as courage, heart, toughness are SUBJECTIVE and should NOT be considered. Why? Different conditions and rules are required in different sports, and something that helps a top player excel in one sport would be not useful (or even a detriment) to a top player in a different sport. IMO this is why this should not be a consideration. (read my MJ comment). As great as he is, does Djokovic fit the "Most Dominant" player - hence, "Greatest Athlete of Any Sport" based on objective statistics to the same degree of these others I have mentioned? Sorry, he doesn't. He is ahead in overall career stats to his closest competitors (Rafa and Roger) by small margins. *Djoker would have to win 33 GS's to equal Gretzky's margin - but Alexander Karelin's 887 straight wins - forget it!!! By far, this is the most indomitable DOMINATION by one player over all competition in ANY sport, I don't think that will EVER be equaled!!* But go ahead and claim Novak is the "GOAT of ALL Sports" simply based on mental toughness and NOT Total Domination by Statistics (like these other athletes I've mentioned), - i don't care. go right ahead. Just know (deep inside) it's only subjective. There's nothing wrong for "rooting for your favorite player!!"

What Chat Gpt says? Novak Djokovic's impact on tennis, particularly in inspiring young and lower-ranked players, and promoting the sport in less affluent regions, are quite pertinent: Role Model for Aspiring Athletes: Djokovic's journey from a challenging background in Serbia to becoming one of the sport's all-time greats is indeed inspirational. His success demonstrates that with talent, hard work, and determination, success is achievable regardless of one's origin. This story resonates powerfully with young athletes, especially those from smaller or less affluent countries. Promotion of Tennis Globally: Djokovic has undoubtedly played a role in popularizing tennis in regions where it was previously less prominent. His success, along with the rise of other Eastern European players, has helped increase the sport's visibility and accessibility in these areas. Influence on Eastern European Tennis: The success of Eastern European players in recent years, including Djokovic, can be partly attributed to the trail he blazed. His achievements have likely inspired many players from the region, contributing to a growing presence in the top ranks of men's tennis. Cultural Impact: Djokovic's influence goes beyond his on-court accomplishments. His commitment to supporting young players, his sportsmanship, and his advocacy work contribute to his stature as a role model and ambassador for tennis. Shift in Tennis Dynamics: The rise of players from Eastern Europe in tennis reflects a broader shift in the sport's dynamics. It showcases the global nature of tennis and how talent can emerge from various parts of the world, challenging traditional powerhouses. In summary, Djokovic's impact on tennis is multifaceted. He's not only one of the greatest players based on his achievements but also a significant figure in promoting the sport, inspiring younger generations, and contributing to the global diversification of tennis talent. His influence is a testament to the power of sports in bridging cultural and economic divides and inspiring individuals worldwide.

1.Federer amassed 70% of his slams against weak players. 2. "Rodger", lol..was the darling of the media and Wimbledon / Rolex / IMG. 3.His kids godfather, Tim Henman, member of the directors draw at Wimbledon gave him the best draws AND put Rafa AND Novak on outside courts. It's well known on the tour! 3. Despite this injustice, the Serbian who had experienced worse with the war, corrected all counts on the court, and against the best players on the planet, on their preferered surface. 4.for instance Federer was always dismantled by Rafa on clay. We know what happened next at the French open.

He ruled Wimbledon, crushed players on the hard courts, overall he is the greatest and I hope he still has a while left in his legs yet, we're lucky to have him. It's the "never say Die" attitude. How many times has Novak come back from 0-2 in sets or saved Match Point in "slams"? Heck, he did it to Federer. They'd be at 23-21 if Federer had closed him out at Wimbledon when he had him dead to right.

2:00 "In 2001 Federer beat Sampras to pass the torch". It was actually a close 5 sets match, where two points decided the winner: 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5. Federer's record against Sampras is 1:0. That match could have gone either way. That's the problem with Federer: Lendl beat McEnroe more than 20 times, to pass the torch. Sampras beat Courier, Becker and Lendl more than 30 times to pass the torch. Djokovic beat Federer and Nadal more than 50 times to pass the torch. Federer has 1:0 record against the dominant previous era champion, where 2 balls decided that match. 1:0 record in 5 years (Federer turned pro in 1998, Sampras retired in 2003). Federer didn't earn his passing of the torch. He just used a week era from 2001-2007 to stack up slams in between 10 years older Sampras who retired at 32. And the raise of Nadal.

Just to play the other side for a moment, devils advocate if you will: goat debates across sports is never measured only by stats. Stats are used to back up the claim but not the soul definition of greatness. I mean look at Tiger and Jordan, they are widely considered the greatest but if you measured all the stats they might take second or third. Federer, Roswall, Borg, Agassi, they still have some stand alone records that hold to this day. I mean Djokovic excels on hard courts and has 14 hard court majors but there’s two hard court slams every year! Just something to thing about, if there was two clay court majors every year? How many slams would Nadal have?

Agreed. Why do we have this double standard in sports? Jordan doesn't have the best stats ever (Chamberlain beats everyone's stats by a mile) yet HE is considered the Greatest by Most (even over Lebron, who has better career stats) - the simple fact is people selectively want to impose "intangibles" when comparing athletes when it is convenient for them. If this is the case for Jordan, then why wouldn't Federer get similar consideration?

Hard surface is a democratic surface. Everyone knows how to play on hard court and everyone can win (murray, wawrinka, medvedev, cilic, alcaraz, thiem in the last 10 years and only for majors tournaments. Even more players won the finals or Masters 1000...). On hard courts there's way more competitiveness than clay court, so it's more difficult to win 10 AO for an hard court specialist than 14 RG for a clay court specialist... even Nadal, who's not an hard court specialist, won 6 slam on hardcourts and djokovic "only" 4 us open... so, definitely 2 slams on hardcourt counterbalance winning a guaranted slam on clay, every year without top competition... if there was 3 majors on grass (like in Laver era) how many slams djokovic would have won?
