Osaka did the same thing. After losing first set, she quit due to a minor injury. My feeling is Novak felt he couldn't beat Zverev in the heat.

Imagine paying thousands for the ticket and you get to watch only 1 set. I totally understand the crowd

this could've been an epic 5 setter but you could tell Novak was feeling it the whole 1st set, it didn't look like he could last...its too bad all the greats get old, and the people that booed him are pathetic...stay classy Australia

A guy who has privileges to play in night session since R1 and beat opponents by fast game. Now he plays in day session making slow court and retire.

He knew it was gonna be hot, it’s gonna be hell and rough. He probably could have pulled it off, but he would risk even more injury and will be spanked by sinner due to his ailing condition.

The wheel did rotate in the favour of Zverev. After his awful injury against Nadal at RG in the semifinal, now he goes to the final after his opponent is forced to retire after an injury. Maybe he also wins it and gets a well deserved trophy that he is missing, after winning everything possible at just 27 years old. He won masters 1000, atp tour finals and olympic gold. Also as a curiosity, Zverev will go down in history as the only tennis player to beat Djokovic at AO and Nadal at RG.

Not surprised at all. He would have retired eventually even if he had won the tiebreaker. His muscle tear is darn serious esp for a 37.7 year old athlete. Father time spares no athlete. Djo might never win another title (99). Even he knows his tennis mortality is fast approaching.

Where is the respect for possibly the greatest player of all time that has won here 10 times and over his career has fought on like a true fighting champion. Yeah it’s disappointing for those who have paid to watch a huge semi, but he is obviously not able to go on after an 80 min set deep into the tournament… the booing is pathetic.

In a way I can understand why the crowd weren't happy paying all that money out for 1 set of very ordinary tennis. Novak should have been aware that his injury wasn't going to hold up for the remaining of the Tournament and forfeited against Alcaraz. Now he has just handed the Tournament to Sinner.

People can cheer or boo whoever they want. Not everyone has to kneel down and kiss Djokovic's feet. People commenting that anyone who booed should be banned for life are total clowns 🤡

The booing was really low class. We knew he was injured and might have to retire. It sucks, but it's his health not a man quitting.
