Here re-watching 3 years later. Hoping Thiem can get back to this level. He’s a confidence player and needs some big wins and momentum. The forehand doesn’t have the weight/power that it used to, but he will get it back !

Dominic is one of the few players who hasn't won a Grand Slam that doesn't fear any opponent, that along with all the improvements he has made to his game makes him a real threat to Rafa. Dominic is playing better than last year, he has more variety in his shots, he is far more skilled than last year, obviously this new coach he employed has done some good work with him. If he can get the first set against Rafa, then Rafa will have a real test on his hands, Dominic is very mentally tough. I was really impressed with how he beat Djokovic, this was a brilliant performance, well done Dominic.

Thiem is a real beast, especially on clay. He won already few matches vs Nadal on his favorite surface, playing nice offensive tennis and I suppose he has the best record vs Rafa on clay too. Also the crazy US Open 2018 match between those two, the first bagel set was the best tennis I ever seen. If he is fit and ready mentally, the final will be a blockbuster.

Thiems kick serve out Wide and change it up on big pressure points by thumping the T serve was such a key pattern of play Thiem threw the kitchen sink at him from the baseline simply by an healthy balance of extreme margin play by aiming big targets with his heavy rpms and step in to finish him with his incredible forehand. Not to forget his outstanding defense play forcing Djokovic to hit tough volleys Also loved the way how Thiem used so much backhand slice . Well the importance of it was to disrupt Djokovics backhand. Furthermore it was important to Thiem to float it more wide instead of cutting it short more often than not . That secured him to counterpunch and use his wheels to outlast Djokovic. As the match went on he used short slices and drop shots to bring Novak in quite naturally. Another pattern to me which is overlooked is how Thiem trades heavy forehands with Djokovic. Djokovics biggest baseline stroke to me is the spread of his forehand on clay so Thiem did well to counter that wing retrieving and sending it back to Djokovic remarkably well So in the end it was his clutch serving + big resilient baseline which outlasted Djokovic and brought him the victory

This was pretty satisfying to watch. As someone who normally likes Djokovic, I couldn’t get behind him due to all of his whining, (as opposed to the silent Thiem.) Congrats to Thiem on a second RG final in a row!

In September, Thiem will be 26. He plays great but he is not Next Gen!
@wadiezaidi81395 жыл бұрын
Yes he is next Gen He and Medvedev Actually the 3 are still dominating the game its unfair cause they were playing for such a long time that's why the younger players can't compete with them cause they're less experienced although they're super talented This shows how important experience is

I gotta hand it to thiem. He's probably the only player along with Nadal who can compete with nole in RG. He really rose to the occasion. That said I think that nole could have played better just like he did with zverev. Oh well good luck to the doninator hope he wins cause he deserves it

I do believe Thiem has been improving at the French year by year. He was actually beating Rafa in the long rallies until set 2 before Rafa changed tactics. FO 2020 will be interesting, the draw will be crucial with fitness for the favorites. Nadal is a monster at the French and rightfully so, but thiem is also a beast. The world's best claycourters for a reason.

So evenly matched, toe to toe, but it did have the slight feel that Djokovic was always just slightly on the catch up. Both guys were absolutely amazing here. Happy Thiem won. Tennis is going to need new super star competitors when the old guard eventually slide away into the history books. I was genuinely surprised how strong Thiem was against Djokovic.
