For those with an astigmatism;I astigmatisms in both eyes, and this is what works for me and has worked for several other people I've turned into it since:Try using a red dot absolutely co-witnessed through a small rear apature. You don't need the front sight up to do this, the key is the small apature rear constricting the light entering your eye.I use this with an Aimpoint micro (R1) on a lower 1/3 mount by looking over the sights at the big smudge of a dot for 0-50, and dropping down on to the sights which shrinks and sharpens the dot allowing better accuracy at longer ranges or smaller targets.

Karl I can echo your history feeling. On my short list for years was to walk Omaha and Utah and in 2002 I finally did it. After studying the events of that day for decades; to stand on those beaches and (in the case of Omaha) look up at the bluffs; to see the modern reality in front of me while my mind placed the black and white past over the very spot I was standing; it was an awesome experience. Good Q&A. Nobody asked about the STG? We were told we would get a magazine update on the HMG Facebook page and then the week ended without one. I guess no knowledge on your side either. Enjoy both channels. Keep your powder dry and your faith in God.

Regarding the registered sear in a modern semi auto I remember a a while back people were talking about putting a FNC sear in a SCAR. I don't know if there is any validity but the consensus was the ATF would frown upon it. At the time I don't think FNC sears were crazy expensive and had it been possible and legal you could have theoretically had a FA SCAR for around 10k.

Every time I listen to one of your Q&A videos, usually takes about 3 days to get through one, I am amazed by how much knowledge you guys have in both modern and historic firearms. I especially like it when you get off on the "what if" tangents. I am especially excited for the next project: Lever Gun What If Alternate History. I personally feel that they are an under rated platform. It would be interesting/fun to see each of you pick your favorite lever gun model and cartridge and shoot a match with them.

Karl, you don't understand how happy I am hearing you say you play Hurdy Gurdy- I'm in my universities early music ensemble and it's the one instrument I never get to play for more than a few minutes- I'm stuck in the wind section. Nothing like a great dance tune on a hurdy gurdy. In relating music to some of the more popular topics on Inrange, it would be really neat to see videos on recreation and it's impact on the battlefield, such as pianos delivered to fronts, marching songs and cadences, military bands and also things like sports, games, holidays and other things that keep people deployed into bad situations mentally healthy.

I just love how karl doesn't care about what kind ammo he shoots I'm the same way. One of my buddies that barley got into guns was telling me to never use cheap bulk ammo and was happy to pay 50 cents per round. At the end of the day i only care if it goes bang. I don't reload my own ammo and clean my guns regularly anyways, so bulk/cheap ammo is fine by me.

The Belt, Vest, Pack system is often called the "Line" system. Your 1st Line is your belt, and typically the 1st thing you put on and the last thing you would ditch/doff. I keep a few mags on mine along with an IFAK. Your 2nd Line is your Vest/Plate Carrier, pretty self explanatory. If you need to ditch your Plates or Vest, your in a pretty bad place, so will need a few things on you battle belt. I am sure you can guess whats the 3rd line.

The market tends to solve problems when there is ample competition, but when monopolies and oligopolies control a market, there is no reason for them to be competitive. If you are against Net Neutrality, then you better be supporting a government decision to break up companies like Comcast into many smaller entities that actually compete.
@KarltheKrazyone
@KarltheKrazyone 7 жыл бұрын
Karl, a factor of net neutrality that I don't often hear mentioned is that it's an international problem. Whatever the US decides will have huge ripple on effects compared to say what Canada or Australia decide. Do you think that there is room within the debate in the US to simply take a "good of the world" stance and mandate neutrality, or would American exceptionalism/isolationism mean that the debate has to be only framed as a cost:benefit in the US?
@Jixijenga
@Jixijenga 7 жыл бұрын
Probably not, the people against the equal treatment of data are inherently selfish and greedy people which is how the powers that be control them. Net Neutrality is something a lot of Democrats want so they're told to be against it which makes them eat up the bullshit, never questioning why the other color wants it. These people really don't give a fuck about the rest of the world.

In regards to the knee-jerk reaction: The tools ISPs would use to prioritize and filter traffic are the same tools the government would need to censor traffic. With net neutrality in place, there's little business incentive to deploy such tools. With those tools in place, there's little reason not to start legislating what goes over the internet. Those of us who have been on the net for a long time will remember that Net Neutrality is what allowed P2P traffic to become a thing. When record companies started going after P2P users, they had to do pursue individual users and companies building P2P tech such as Napster. Without net neutrality, they could more easily just have pushed for nationwide legislation on P2P traffic. I think Ian hit the nail on the head with the main argument against NN: Traffic shaping can have performance benefits, so long as you aren't one of the people being shaped. I think we've all had to deal with slow public / hotel / aircraft wifi because everyone was using bandwidth on netflix/youtube. Traffic Shaping could fix that. But so would investing in better infrastructure, something that traffic shaping might dis-incentivise. Other arguments: It's hurting Comcast / AT&T's bottom line. Net Nutrality would mean they can make more money, while offering less service. That's bad for investors, and bad for 401K plans. Good for consumers though. It prevents Comcast / AT&T from experimenting with different pricing models. Maybe cheaper options that don't include video service? I'm sure we'd all love that... Yeah, those reasons are all awful for most of us. But I think being honest about them is a good way of explaining why there's such a big anti-nn push.

The best way I've ever been able to "show" people what my astigmatism looks like is to get a clear glass bowl & set some grapes still on the vine in the center. Then have them look through the bowl after picking it up. I find I can still use them by doing 3 things. 1. Only have them as bright as needed. 2. Keep both eyes open. (Should be doing this anyway) 3. Focus on what I want to shoot, not the dot. (Was taught to do this regardless of the type of sights your using anyway) This let's me use most red dots out there. I've also picked up a Vortex Spitfire 1x prism recently but yet to actually use it. Just playing with it tho it seems to solve these issues while creating the new one of eye relief, as mentioned by Karl.

Regarding information speeds and the Net Neutrality discussion, most ISPs have some fine print about CIR, Committed Information Rate, or the minimum guaranteed speed that they will provide. When I was involved in the ISP business, the TELCOs were notorious for having 28.8kbps as a CIR for a DSL circuit and some cable companies were starting to get on the bandwagon. The TELCOs used 28.8bps because by law (again, at the time, it's been about 12 years so this may have changed) they had to provide voice quality service on any circuit they sold. My ISP was a subsidiary of a local cable company and we offered the full range of services; cable modem, dark fiber, POTS, T-1(and above), and ISDN/DSL. As a general rule, we tried to ensure that whatever capacity we sold never grossly exceeded what our backbone could provide, and we were successful. The cold equations are that with a $50/mo cable modem account that provides 10mbit/s you aren't going to be able to provide a dedicated 10mbit/s backbone. That's roughly 7 T-1 circuits and back in the day we paid way more than $50 for just one (at our price, not resale price). In the end, it becomes a balancing act and while I think the government could/should give guidance, unless they declare that the last mile providers are now utilities, I'm not sure I want to see them regulated. It gives the government a chance to put their nose under the tent of what has become something as vital to the country today as long distance was in 1970, probably more so. This is the same government who has trouble passing a budget and holding a contractor liable for the website they produced for Obamacare. Perhaps if they formed a joint oversight committee where there were both industry and government members, but even then, I get a squick feeling when I think of just who are going to be making the decisions.

The major difference between prismatic vs reflex/holographic sights is prismatic sights come with magnification. Therefore, they are used for a different purpose, longer ranges, distance shots, whereas reflex sights are mainly designed for close range and qcb. Typically, prismatic sights come with 3x 4x 5x magnification, but there are exceptions such as the burris ARX1, which is a 1x prismatic sight. In addition. The reticle of prismatic sights is always visible, even without illumination turned on, no battery is required during daytime use. The red dot or projected reticle on relflex and holographic sights always requires led powered illumination, when battery dies, no reticle. With any magnified prismatic sights the iron sights are not in focus and co-witness setup is not possible. Reflex sights can be mounted as a co-witness or 1/3 co-witness to line up with iron sights.

I second belts. I used to airsoft a lot, and ended up coming to the conclusion that my favorite load-bearing gear for use with an AR was... the ALICE belt. I usually had two magazine pouches, a gas mask pouch as a dump pouch, sidearm with one spare magazine, and two canteens. It's super light light weight in comparison to most things on the market today, it's really easy to take on and off, and honestly the need to keep my gear secure was more important to me than quick reloads (which still weren't all that slow). I have this theory that people are more willing to have less secure magazine pouches partially out of the need to reload faster, but also because with the increase in weight and armor they simply can't move fast enough anymore in order to need more secure pouches.

I was told by an optometrist, who is a gun guy, that any magnified optic, like a 1-4 or 1-6 illuminated, used on 1x like a red dot could eliminate the "smudge, smear or blur" some astigmatism sufferers see with red dots or holographic sights. You won't have all the same functions as a traditional red dot, but depending on how bad your astigmatism is this might be a option. Test it in a store and see if it works out for you.

RE the red dot sight on a Unimak rail - there are a couple of disadvantages you don't mention. First, it makes the rifle feel barrel heavy even with lightweight optics and mounts (4-5 oz). Secondly, the barrel-mounted rail makes for an extremely hostile environment for an optic in terms of shock and heat. That fact tends to push you from budget optics to mil-spec optics if reliability is a critical factor. As a point of interest, my EOTech XPS-2 would not remain attached to the rails of either an AK 74 or an AKM with the factory mount. Without using thread-lock (which the factory recommends against), the securing knob would invariably back-off and allow the optic to start moving. RE the restriction on folding stocks with a side mount optic. There are several high-quality folding stocks on the market that are available in left and right-folding configurations. CNC Warrior has them for VEPRS. RE mounting a red dot on the sight tower. That is an abomination that leaves the rifle without any back-up sights. Fun for a range toy, unsuitable for serious use. The unfortunate, expensive reality, is that there is no better place to mount an optic on an AK than the side rail, preferably with RS Regulate mounts.

As someone with astigmatism, usually bright point light sources (like car tail lights at night) get smeared around. The pattern, I think, depends a lot on the individual eye. My own astigmatism tends to manifest as a diagonal smearing of the light source. So usually I can figure out where the actual origin of the light is (like in the car example), which is sufficient for me to bike safely at night. But trying to shoot accurately would definitely require extra concentration to find the "real" dot within the smear, and part of the sight picture would be obscured. Not something I'd want to deal with while being clocked, that's for sure!

Setting a red dot to its highest setting is exactly what red dots look like all the time to people with astigmatisms, with varying degrees of severeness depending on the persons eyes. One way to work around this for people looking for sighting solutions is to turn the brightness down as low as you are comfortable while still being able to see the dot clearly. It'll still be a star burst, but a much smaller one. HWS's like EoTechs also work well for me, personally. As far as sights that are broken eye friendly the Russian Rakurs sight, while a prism, has a very generous eye relief and appears sharp to my eyes. I have no experience with the Obzor.

The British MOD Police (a civilian police force that guards MOD sites and a few other things) chose the semi only MP7 SF as their standard weapon. The intent was to replace all of their L85 rifles, MP5 SMGs and Browning pistols with a single weapon. As you might guess, it hasn't really worked that great with all of the previous classes of weapons having to be retained and upgraded. I have fired one of these guns and they are great to shoot, I just have zero confidence that the round would do anything of note when it hit the target. There was also a brief period where somebody had the idea that the RAF could adopt the full auto MP7 as a weapon for fast jet crews, but this went nowhere. Bear in mind, some squadrons dropped the Browning Hi Power on the grounds that it was too heavy (ripped off of the vest during ejection) and replaced them with .32 ACP chambered Walther PPs, so I have no idea how an MP7 was supposed to work in a jet cockpit.

I've run both my FAL and G3 in matches; it is hands down NOT competitive. It's a BLAST to shoot, and I love doing it from time to time, but you're going to have a VERY hard time keeping up. I think with the FAL at a decent local match I was right about the 50% mark; with the G3, I actually *did* win, but that was mostly because it was -17F in December and only about 20 of us showed up, and I shot really well against guys severely hampered by the weather. I shot the same G3 at a tac-rifle match, which I've both placed highly at AND won using a red dot AR, and placed like 4th or 5th from last. I watch a lot of InRange, and I love shooting old guns, and even run them in matches from time to time, but they're not a good choice. Anything you can do with a FAL or G3 in 3Gun, you can do far better with an AR

Some thoughts on the 1911: For military use a lighter gun with more capacity and less maintenance requirements makes more sense. Bear in mind the military makes very little combat use of pistols, and even the Tier One guys rarely use pistols in combat. Pistols suck for killing people. LEOs use pistols as a primary weapon and have similar concerns to the military, though I would argue a higher risk for ambush and multiple aggressors. They have an even better argument for capacity. For personal self defense it is fine, if that is what someone wants to carry. Capacity concerns are irrelevant in that context, and weight concerns only become relevant if the add weight discourages the individual from carrying the pistol. My research on CCW suggests that as much as people profess to love the double stack duty pistols it is really a minority that actually carries them. Last year I went through some of the better online sources like TAG and EDC Forum and sifted through a few years of self reported data regarding EDC. While this is far from scientific the outcome was interesting. Most commonly carried guns highest to lowest. 1. Single stack (sub) compacts. 9mm or less. (Shields and the like) 2. Small revolvers. (J-frame) 3. Compact double stack (Glock 26 M&P compact 1.0) 4. "Duty" double stacks. Glock 19, M&Ps, Sig229 5. "Duty" single stacks. 1911, Sig 220 6. "Duty" revolvers. The first two, single stack compacts and small revolvers, represent the overwhelming majority of all carry guns in the self reported data I saw. This mirrors what I see in the real world too, as one of my close friends and shooting buddies is a big glock fan that never misses an opportunity to talk shit about anyone carrying a 1911......though in the real world he carries a 9mm Shield the overwhelming majority of the time. Less capacity, less "power", and I find more difficult to shoot well than a 1911.......the gun he absolutely relishes shitting on. Its attraction? Size and weight. Can't argue against that. I even own one myself. High Capacity, at least in CCW, is generally one of those theoretical benefits that in reality is essentially irrelevant. You need to have enough ammo for the task at hand, more ammo than that is certainly not worse, but it also in no way measurably better. If you need four rounds to stop an attack, and you came to the fight with 19 then those remaining 15 do nothing to improve your outcome. They are irrelevant to the outcome. The only way capacity can be relevant in this example is if you didn't have the four rounds you needed. If you want to have a little fun, going forward in life keep an eye out for self defense shooting and record all of the situations where the defender required 10 or more rounds. If you are really bored, or laid up with an injury as I was for a while, you can try to research what data is available since the age of the internet. I did, and while it was by no means exhaustive it was informative as I discovered defensive shootings involving 10 or more rounds are legitimately very rare. The media, the tacticool community, the operator-ish instructors, and the 3-gun crowd would have us believe otherwise, but that is simply not the case as far as I can tell. You are far more likely to need a precision longer range shot, far more likely to need hand to hand skills, far more likely to fight over weapon retention......hell, far more likely to need First Aid GSW skills then need 10 or more rounds. I enjoy shooting but I don't mistake a 38 round pistol stage as having any relation to a real world gun fight. I love the 1911 but I carry tactical tupperware. If i wanted to carry a 1911 I would, and I would never question whether it was enough gun. 8+1 in an ergonomic easy to shoot gun will handle 99+% of all REALISTIC self defense situations without even requiring a reload. As far as 9mm vs 45scp.....perhaps worth a deeper dive another time. I favor 9mm, but the FBI report isn't the "last word" that people make it out to be. Anyone interested should read the full paper with a critical eye, and then the sources that were used to create it. TL;DR The FBI went back to 9mm for institutional reasons, and because of their much publicized departure from 9mm historically this paper was required to justify this return. Doesn't make it wrong, or bad or anything else. But it is not the "last word" on caliber by any means.

The flaw in your argument about Net Neutrality is that the ISPs that it supposedly restricts were in favor of keeping it. That's because the way it was implemented was an all or nothing of a cluster of regulations from the FCC. Why ISPs like it is it makes competition harder basically giving them local, government-backed monopolies. It is now 2019 and literally right now another ISP provider is laying new cable on my street to compete with those who already have connections to my home. As of right now, I believe the end of what was called net neutrality has been good for me.

Great Content! I have a question that hopefully get's answered in another video: Melee combat was still found in both world wars., but only the spade and knife seemed to be used in both. From what I read, crafted hand weapons like the trench club/mace saw use in WW1 and I didn't find reading of their use in WW2. If there were still instances of hand to hand combat, like Eastern Front WW2, why didn't trench maces/clubs return? Thanks!

Concerning the bottlenecked pistol calibres: H&K released a PDF describing that in the case of a modern terrorist attack, most gunmen wear AK mags as a sort of improvised bodyarmor. The" traditional" SMGs like the MP5 firing 9mm can't actually penetrate the mags reliably in test compared to 4.6mm with its higher velocity. Also the maximum effective ranged increased from ~100m to ~200m. Keep in mind that this information was given by the producer of the MP7 and the 4.6mm cartridge but I think that those are valid arguments for the use of this type of ammunition.

You can allways make a senario where the best weapon for even a fobit is a H&K G3 to slug around with, incase that they happen to have a AK47 armed enemy and have to fire at him over 300 m away. It depends on If you want to sell something or you don´t want to buy a replacement for something.

I had initially been looking at a Lantac Dragon muzzle break for my new rifle, after watching a lot of your videos again and some others I realised I'd rather have a flash hider. I ended up with a White Sound defence FOSSA 556, they class it as a flash hiding compensator. I'd be interested on your views of things like this. From what I've seen of reviews, it outputs a lower lux level than an A2 at night and has a decent compensation for muzzle rise(though their isn't a huge amount on 5.56) when timed properly. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have an astigmatism but do not wear glasses or contacts and I have good vision. I might not have a bad astigmatism though since the red dots are pretty crisp to my eye when out side. When inside/dark it starts to burt a lot but I figure that doesn't matter all that much in a HD situation though.

well if you know what astigmatism is you know that it can occure on different parts of the eye for different people. Its a condition but the effects are different for each individual. I dont have problems using red dots either.

From what I've read whether and how an astigmatism affects a red dot is completely random to the individual and a lot of people will never even know they have one without looking through a red dot sight.

I think it depends on the individual. I have both astigmatism and nearsightedness. The nearsightedness is totally correctable with glasses, but my astigmastism resists correction. My glasses mitigate the worst of it to let me read, but point light sources still smear around unpleasantly.

As for the rattenkreig question. I would take whatever the hell I could get ammo resupply with, preferably a semi. A WWSD 5.56 would be great, until you run out of ammo and all there is floating around is 7.62x39 (as an example).

I think you missed a couple. To name a few that still use 7.62x39 as a front line cartridge; Cuba, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, North Korea, Vietnam, and more. Not to mention all the countries that still have it as a second line round like China. Yes, there are a lot that have it serving alongside special units equipped with 5.56, and 7.62x51 rifles. Then there is all the non-state groups that use it like the Peshmerga, Isis, Boko Haram, Taliban, etc. The point is that 7.62x39 is still and will be for a long time the most produced cartridge in the world.

The Netherlands was the second country in the world to codify Net Neutrality in law. The reason was that the biggest ISP at the time was talking with investors about their anti-neutral plans, such as charging customers per tweet. The vice prime minister at the time was an avid tweeter and he could easily be made to understand why the country needed Net Neutrality.
