Fabian H 03:51 Ever thought of doing live stream Q&As? Daniel F 05:03 Would a magazine cut off and single loading option have made a lever gun a more acceptable option to military adoption? Benjamin R 07:52 What is your opinion of Russian/Belarusian optics quality? Have you been seeing improvement over the years? Anthony H 10:29 What do foreigners need to know about competing in the Finnish match? Alex S. 12:12 What your y'alls thoughts on the G36? Jonathan J. 19:35 John Moses Browning or Eugene Stoner for greatest American firearm engineer? Christopher S 21:33 If you could go back in time and have one gun receive the development the AR15 has received since it's inception, which do you think would be most interesting? Ian S 24:56 Do you think we will see a time were handguns and rifles will have no iron sights? DandyEcho 26:49 Why is it you think that bolt action rifles and pump action shotguns became the norm? Brian C 30:25 Best value in home-built parts kits available today? CETME-C/G3, CETME-L, Uzi, or still the AK? David L 35:35 Update on your Beretta 92 and Walther CCP? Garrett Sder 36:24 Favorite piece if classic/vintage gear? Roy B 38:54 Is an SMG effective in a modern context? Jon C 43:47 Given the number of weapons you (and particularly Ian) have lying around and borrow for videos, how many calibers of ammo do you have lying around? Tim B 47:15 Would you all consider a project to modernize the M1 Carbine as a sort of small “jungle gun”? Ryan Z 48:59 If you had access to a C93 Borchardt and an early Madsen semi-auto rifle, would you run a 2 gun match with them? Imperator314 49:58 What are your opinions/preferences regarding proper AR-15 lubrication? Scott F 01:03:31 I'm really interested in competing in Desert Brutality. How should I start out and what gear would you recommend at the minimum? David C 01:07:48 Do either of you own any "wall hanger" firearms and if so, why don't you shoot them?. justin C 01:10:54 Regardless of current technological limitations what in your option would constitute the perfect carbine optic? Gori the all powerful 01:11:42 In the previous Q&A you stated that of all the cap and ball revolvers, you'd carry and 1860 Colt. Why? Icebreaker Interactive 01:13:53 It's World War 3 in 1985. Alex 01:21:19 Are revolvers obsolete for combat? James 01:21:59 Legalities aside, would you please explain the benefits and negatives of concealed carry vs open carry. Andrew D 01:26:04 Why were pump action military rifles not a thing? Fred R 01:26:41 Any thoughts on buying and restoring surplus military vehicles as a project car? Anonymous 01:35:07 Have you ever considered running or participated in a shooting competition with nighttime or low light shooting? Karl you are absolutely right about the stripper clips being all over the place. When I was in Latvia on an exchange program, I talked to some locals about where some battles had occurred, bought a metal detector and went out into the woods. I used the metal detector to look at first but after finding almost a dozen stripper clips within 20 feet of where I was, I started just eyeballing the surface and only digging for bigger objects. After 1 single day I had found, 42 sets of full stripper clips, 4 canteens, a really rusted Luger, a dozen helmets with all sorts of damage (Russian and German), an STG44 which had a bent barrel, several Mosins, and what looked like an SVT, a foxhole with 3 MG42 barrels, a box of intactish grenades (which I flagged and reported to the authorities), and a ton of other shit I couldn't identify. People fail to realize that both sides lost more stuff than they could ever really use in combat. When the adrenaline and fear kicks in you lose stuff left and right. And I found all of that stuff in a wooded area less than 5 acres big. Edited to fix my derpy spelling

It's not just adrenalin, when people get injurred they loose things, when artillery pulverizes them broken and bent things stay there, dead soldiers are burried or carried away, injurred ones are carried away and if time matters you carry your buddy and not his stuff... all the other things aren't/weren't cared as much, or time wasn't there to care about them.

Battle fields today still yield a fair amount of discarded / lost equipment. Even from the American Civil War. People have found unfired Minie balls prercusion caps even today. Grenades and other explosives are a concern in Europe, and all countries have active OED service. This is different than finding an aerial bomb or artillery shell, which was expended but never exploded. Used stripper clips and mags can also be found.

Admittedly I work for a different government, dealing with different kinds of applications, but duplicate applications actually tend to be a real headache when it comes to trying to get the applicant's submission processed quickly. If and when the computer system even realises that the applications have been duplicated, we have to decide which application is most complete then link and withdraw/reject the others. This often involves getting the duplicates transferred to/from different offices because often each duplicate will end up being processed in a different place, especially if they arrive at different times through different channels. With any and all applications I would recommend applying once and enquiring frequently for updates.

I think you're underestimating the potential of 4K, especially for ForgottenWeapons: It would drastically improve our enjoyment of worn out, obscure markings on really old guns. Or allow us to read the titles of all the books on Ians shelves. I also definitely need more details on the cacti in the Q&A videos.

Glad I'm not the only one that pauses videos to look at someone's library. Then again, I may have more than 1,500 books in mine so you could say that teh written word fascinates me a touch. On topic though I run a 40" 4K screen for watching videos and 1080P with the built in upscaling is plenty sharp enough. The biggest issue with 4K is that the OS doesn'[t handle it well as far as text is concerned and my old eyes can't read anything without slapping it to 300% which only applies to some things rather than all.
@coffeestainedwreck
@coffeestainedwreck 6 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but I think you'd need to save the frame and then zoom in to get any value out of that - it's not what video does well at all. In terms of video, I think a resolution that matches most of our screens (720, 1080) is optimal. I'd prefer that Ian posted pictures on the FW blog for things that require lots of zoom and detail.

Something to consider for a slick plate carrier is the health of the user. In field conditions it is beneficial to be able to remove your chest rig and the weight of all your kit for a multitude of reasons, and yet keep ballistic protection on your body. It doesn't seem logical until you've had to carry a lot of kit on patrol for significant distances.

Pump action shotguns are more prevelant than bolt action due to shotguns primary use rooting in wing shooting. With a pump, you can charge the next round while mainting your swing and follow through on your moving target much easier than you can with a bolt or lever action. It is also arguably faster. Pumps are not as popular on rifles because traditionally, rifles are often shot from a rest, weather it be bags or a bipod. The pump gets in the way of this and requires the user to re-set his test every time he fires to charge the weapon. With a bolt action, the forend can be rested and the bolt manipulated with relative little disturbance to the rifle.

The grip safety on a 1911 helps keep it from firing if dropped with the thumb safety off due to inertia of the trigger itself which was all metal and heavy.

I say handguns need manual safeties because cops get itchy trigger fingers. "accidental" shootings by cops went way up after they started using glocks instead of berettas. That documentary was seriously healing for me, and it's amazing that after Afghan and Iraq, and 100 years later, their voices about that war echo some of the things we feel and say all the time. I believe the answer to the question of why we don’t see more lever action shotguns is because you don’t have the ability of rapid follow up shots like you do with a pump. You can use your non dominant hand to rack the shotgun without having to move your eye off of a flying target like you have to most of the time with a bolt action rifle. This coupled with the higher pressures of rifle rounds making the bolt action more reliable than a pump rifle which is why I believe small caliber pump rifles like .22s were popular.

@InRangeTV You mentioned the Grip safety of the 1911 still being there post addition of the thumb safety. Two Reasons that pretty much blend together If i recall correctly. The weapon was adopted in 1911 and it was a single action only firearm... In 1911 we still had actual cavalry who would possibly be required to fire from horseback. the 1911 keeps the grip safety because the gun needed to be drop safe even with the thumb safety off. Being a single action only fire control group meant, at the time, that there was no long heavy trigger pull as an added drop safety measure like the double action revolvers of the period. So using the context of possibly being dropped from a horse in a gunfight and not having a double action trigger; the grip safety is absolutely necessary.

The Laugo Alien is the update to almost all of the promise of the HK P7. By essentially flipping the delaying piston to be on top of the barrel, instead of underneath, the Czechs have managed to get the bore axis even lower than the already low P7; and it moves the heat (which makes shooting the P7 uncomfortable after a few mags) further away from the shooters hand. Basically a hybridization of the best aspect of a P7 with a CZ-75. It doesn't have the complicated squeeze cocking mechanism, but while that mechanism is pretty neat, it isn't really as functionally beneficial as the gas delay system.

On the way out of the show, we stopped at an ammo dealer to get some ammunition for the carbine (and other guns I own). I sat the carbine down, propped against the table while I shopped. After it nearly fell over a couple of times, my Dad picked it up and slung it on his shoulder. I couldn't get it back from him until we got to the truck. He really liked his carbine when he was in the Army (Missile Corps) back in the early '60's.

For the G36 question- While deployed to Kosovo I earned my gold Schutzenschnuer (sp? sorry- American) in 2014. Part of that qualification was qualifying on the Bundeswehr G36. I absolutely love my ARs, but the G36 is a fantastic service rifle. There's virtually no recoil, the built-in optic system is excellent IMO. The rifle balanced very well and the controls were ambidextrous and very intuitive. The first time I ever held the rifle I put every round on target and had no question if I had solid hits, all without adjusting zero. If you ever get the chance to shoot one, go for it. I will still choose the AR over the G36, BUT that's merely personal choice. Really enjoyed that rifle.

In regards to the chauchat magazine, I imagine the blanks for the halves of the magazines including the holes in the side of the magazine were die cut from sheet metal in one go. It’s a pain in the ass is what traveling internationally with firearms is. Ignoring the other country for a minute. Traveling from the US with a firearm is a pain. As all firearms are ITAR controlled items. Best places to start are the State Department, TSA, CBP (Customs and Border Patrol), and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) websites and a quick google search. It looks like PewPew Tactical did an article on traveling internationally with a firearm so looking at that would be good. Then you have to look at the country you’re traveling to and have to check their firearms laws and temporary import rules for firearms. But Karl and Ian’s answer is the best answer try to borrow a gun from in country.

Combo plate carrier and chest rig is better for a military that wants to order a large quantity of the same thing for standard issue. But for special forces or civilian competition shooters the desire or need to change your setup is frequent enough that a separate rig and carrier makes more sense.

Some insight for the question about pump/bolt action shotguns and rifles. I think you may have overlooked the fact that one of the reasons to go to breach loading was to fire from prone position. Pump action firearms are incredibly cumbersome to operate from the prone position. I remember an IPSC competition where one shooter was using the troy pump ar15 and when shooting prone he would have constant malfunctions and would loose sight picture every time. Not really a problem for shotguns because who's skeet shooting from prone? but I highly doubt a pump action rifle would military trials.

Referencing the M1923 cartridge belt (the US WW2 belt for the M1903 Springfield and the M1 Garand), they were indeed originally procured with the inner snap-secured strap to hold the second stripper/charger clip securely even when the main flap was left open. I think that feature was carried over from the M1910 in WW1-era. That said, I inherited a 1923-style belt in OD #7 from my grandfather's post-WW2 USCG shooting team gear, and it doesn't have the inner strap. It might be Korea-era, though, by which point the M1903 family was basically relegated out of service. Unfortunately, the markings are long since worn off or obscured by decades of dirt, grease, and general crud from use. But I agree, it's a solid choice for "unexpectedly good vintage load-bearing gear", though I'd put the British P08 gear as not too far behind, since it's arguably a semi-user-configurable, "modular system" approach. It sorta has the retention drawback, but if memory serves some models had inner retention straps as well. In some respects, the P37 equipment from WW2 is a partial step backward.

The 1911 was the last American horse pistol. There are a multitude of reasons a calveryman may need to drop his sidearm to free up a hand to take some other corrective action. Thats what the lanyard is for and with a revolver, not much of a consern. But imagin the havoc of a single action selfloadong pistol bouncing at the end of the lanyard.

Karl, you hit the nail on the entire point of select fire/cut offs. The most common thing I've been told by instructors is limiting rate of fire so soldiers don't blow their load in the first minute of combat... their words, not mine. I believe that is the entire reason the US went to three round burst on their rifles.

In Finland if weapons overall lenght is over 840mm and/ or barrel is over 400mm it is a rifle, under both the measurements it is a pistol. It is just that simple. To buy ammo you need to show your gun licence (looks like a drivers licence) if you don't have one good luck. Transporting gun from one EU country to another is just case of filling a form far enough ahead of time that weels of byrocracy have time to turn. Outside EU you might strugle. Alot.

I own a mosberg bolt action shot gun with a box mag it’s box mag only holds 2 rounds and I kinda sucks because the extractor is like two skinny steel square pins with hooks on the end (it’s been a while so I might be slightly mistaken) that hook around the rim of the shell so unless the shell enters from the bottom it doesn’t eject right because one of the hooks doesn’t hook the rim of the shell and it tends to extract the shell but when it ejects it tends to flip and land back in the open bolt so hand loading a 3 rd shot is not really worth it your better off loading the mag racking the bolt and then removing the mag and adding another shell but when bird hunting on a wheeler it takes too long

Besides that... there is really no need for an 4k or even WQHD quality video... even on my main monitor where i play on WQHD i can watch Ian's FW videos in full extend and still make out every last corner of the darkest spot on the rifle while standing in the other side of my room.

I remember hearing that the 1911 grip safety was kept at the request of the cavalry: if the pistol was dropped from the back of a galloping horse and then dragged by its lanyard (another thing the cavalry insisted in) then the light single-action trigger could easily be pulled by a piece of debris on the ground while the pistol was bouncing around, pointing in random directions. Also, I would like to hear that Norwegian lady's memoirs of the German occupation. It sounds like a video that would be enlightening and down-to-earth but also not terribly long either.

I would argue that maybe the biggest factor (at least for the U.S.) for not standardizing on a lever gun was cost. They went with the inferior trapdoor Springfield because they thought it would be cheaper to convert in inventory muskets to that. I have heard that at times post Civil War soldiers were allowed less than 5 rounds per year to train with. The U.S. military was not the super funded behemoth it became during the 20th century and money was a problem.

Great discussion on open vs. concealed carry. This mirrors the opinion that I've had for a long time. They passed open here in Oklahoma several years ago and as someone who works in LE I kind of cringe every time I see someone open carry in public. Especially if they are not using a holster that has some kind of active retention. It's a scary prospect having someone try to take your gun from you and I think a lot of people overestimate their ability to prevent someone from getting their hands on an open carry firearm.

They seem to have a promising product, as they have mentioned being able to get finicky/unreliable firearms to work well, and good preformance in bad environments, such as mud or low temperatures, as well as tolerating dust/dirt/filth. They also have some pretty good articles about the history of firearm lubricant, like how commonly used sperm whale oil(grease) was used, early synthetic options, and the DoD switch to oils.

I actually have a bolt action 20 gauge shotgun that my grandad bought for bird hunting decades before I was born and I have to tell you guys, Ian and Carl got it right. The reason most bolt action shotguns have 3 round mags is _entirely_ due to the physical shape of the shells. The rim combined with the flat tubular shape makes it nigh impossible to create a reliable mag that holds more than three rounds and stays reliable _every time you load it_ . I think that's pretty much the only reason. After all... You can't short stroke a bolt action very easily
