i thought you were in love but falling out of love based on your choice of the “void in between” metaphor. void between implies an emptiness, a absence of feeling, or falling out of love. i thought you were developing a nice poetic irony, the looks are still warm but it’s not real, as per the void. it’s a sense of not embracing reality, but holding on to false hopes when there is actually nothing left: a dance in the rain, smile at a funeral. time to let go and live

I personally dont get that line, Im not a ghost, BUT not the host? But means you are contradicting something you said previously. I mean if the line was "Im not a ghost AND not the host" it would make sense.

I get your point. The line resonated with me, because it made me think of an empire rising and falling and all that's left is a ghost of the past... but not really a ghost because there's still buildings and cultural artifacts. (I'm a history nerd, so this line of "rise and fall" pulled me into the song). Connecting the lyrics to the singer... he's not a ghost clinging to a relationship, instead he wants there to be no "fall." The singer won't even consider themselves, at least in this verse, as a "host" of this failed relationship. A "rise" (getting back together) where they can get away from strangers talking and discuss their feelings and stuff- essentially having no secrets, is the goal. You talked about contradicting something said previously... I think this line connects to the previous line where the singer wants to experience life and "do it all," with a person... but can't because they're not together. ...I'm probably not explaining my thoughts right, and I've only listened to this song like five times, not nearly enough to delve into the meaning behind the whole song.

I think of it as " I'm not a ghost" as he's not a nobody in this world or society. " but not the host of a rise and fall" I think of it as him saying but I'm not someone that becomes really big in society then all of a sudden disappears and is gone from the world. Like an empire it crumbles from within. But I know that meaning has nothing to do with the actual song lol

Wow, I didn't even think of that! I love your idea. This line could also be him saying he's a steady presence. "not a ghost" = he's not haunting a dead/damaged relationship? "but not host of a rise and fall" = Even though he's full of anger and pain he's stuck on this person and won't let them go 1:48. He wants them to feel what he's feeling (not be a ghost and able to affect the person.) Rise and fall could have a double meaning, referring to the roller coaster of human emotions. He wants to experience life and be happy, but there's a fall when the relationship falls apart and they aren't experiencing life together. Sorry for the long word vomit... just my $.02. I really enjoy coming back to this song when I'm feeling stressed out.
