“Eve” was the first science book I’ve read for some time, and I enjoyed it very much. Cat Bohannon’s approach of tracing the evolution of various organs in the human body, with an emphasis on the female side of things, reminded me of another science book, “Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body” by Neil Shubin, published in 2008. What interested me most about Bohannon’s book is what she had to say about the “deeply strange activity” of reading, which wasn’t very much as it seems there’s still lots of research to do in this area. One of the points Bohannon makes throughout “Eve” is that the reason we know more about certain areas of human biology than others is because it is men who have traditionally decided what gets studied and what doesn’t. It’s hard to deny there’s something almost supernatural about the way that arbitrary marks on a sheet of paper can be perceived by the brain in such a way as to elicit roars of laughter, tears of sorrow, and everything in between. I’ve had the same experience of leaving my car at the garage overnight because of a strange noise, only to have the older male mechanic tell me the next day that he took my car for a drive and didn’t hear anything. I waited a few days before bringing my car in again. This time I lucked out and it was the young woman mechanic at the garage who took my car for a drive and identified the problem. She was also able to fix a persistent slow leak I had in one of my tires. Too bad she doesn’t work there anymore. Garages would be well-advised to hire more women mechanics.
